세월호 ‘사건’과 ‘사건’ 이후 문학의 가능성 Ⅱ - 추모소설집 『숨어버린 사람들』을 중심으로 (Sewol ferry 'eventment' and Possibility of literature after 'eventment' Ⅱ － Focusing on 『Hidden people』)

초록

세월호 침몰은 국가가 국민의 구조를 포기한 ‘사건’이었고, ‘사건’으로서 세월호는 신자유주의적 경쟁과 발전의 논리에 익숙한 주체들의 삶을 전면적으로 되돌아보게 했다. 문학은 이야기를 생산하고 슬픔의 정동을 재생산하면서 세월호 사건을 기록했다. 문학적 형상화에 앞서 쏟아지는 언어의 정동을 작가들은 『눈먼 자들의 국가』로 보여주었고, 이후 지속적으로 세월호를 문학적 언어로 옮겨냈다. 본 연구는 세월호 사건 이후 문학적 글쓰기의 과정을 그대로 따라가면서, 문학이 사건에 대해 어떤 기능과 의미를 생산하고 있는지를 기록하려는 목적에서 기획되었다. 이 기획의 일환으로 선행연구에서는 첫 번째 추모소설집인 『우리는 행복할 수 있을까』를 분석했고, 이 글은 후속연구로서 『숨어버린 사람들』을 대상으로 작품들이 소환하는 ‘비-인간’의 형상들에 초점을 맞추었다.
방현희의 「광장에 지다」에 등장하는 ‘골렘’은 첫 번째 비인간의 형상이다. ‘골렘’은 정치적 권리가 박탈당하고 단지 생물학적 신체로만 존재한다. ‘골렘’은 말할 수도 없고 생각할 수도 없으며, 오로지 ‘먹는 입’만 남은 조에(zoe)로서의 생명체일 뿐이다. ‘골렘’이 광화문 광장에서 단식을 하고 있는 유가족 앞에서 음식을 먹을 때 그는 이미 이웃한 타자의 아픔에 무감각한 비-인간으로 전락한 것이다. 또한 살아있으나 죽은 것과 다르지 않은 수동적 주체로서 ‘무젤만’이 두 번째 비인간의 형상이다. 본고는 ‘무젤만’을 ‘침묵하는 입’으로 제시하며, 이들은 이웃한 타자의 아픔에 침묵한 대가로서 죄책감과 자살 충동에서 벗어나지 못한 채 스스로를 비-인간의 문턱까지 끌고 가는 존재들이다. 이평재의 「숨어버린 사람들」은 이러한 수동적 주체들의 비-인간적 형상을 가장 극단적인 방식으로 폭로하고 있다. ‘말하는 입’이 거세된 생물학적 신체인 ‘골렘’과 ‘침묵하는 입’만을 지닌 수동적 주체로서 ‘무젤만’들은 사회의 정상적 셈법에서 뺄셈의 대상으로 기입된다. 이들은 생명권력의 비정상성을 증명하면서 바깥으로 내몰리고 배제되는 존재들이다. 그리고 예외가 상례화되는 상태가 지속된다면 이들이 가는 길의 마지막에는 인종주의적 차별과 절멸만이 기다리고 있을 것이다. 김종광의 「가금을 처분하라고?」는 신자유주의적 체제 내에서 누군가 소수자나 주변인으로 대상화되었을 때 해당 존재의 생명과 신체가 보호될 가능성이 현저히 떨어진다는 점과, 세월호의 희생자나 유가족들이 그 대상이 될 가능성을 농후하다는 것을 알레고리적으로 보여주는 소설이었다.
국가권력은 ‘먹는 입’에 대한 ‘말하는 입’의 우위라는 위계를 결정하면서 탄생했다. 여기에 더해 우리 사회는 ‘먹는 입’을 추방한 것이 아니라, 스스로를 ‘먹는 입’으로 탄생시켰다. 이러한 윤리적 태도는 이웃한 타자의 슬픔에 무감각하고 책임을 지지 않는 주체들을 만든다. 이 소설집에서 먹는 기계가 된 ‘골렘’, 또 책임을 회피하고 침묵을 선택함으로써 살아있는 시체가 되어버리는 ‘무젤만’, 그리고 결국 절멸의 길로 들어서는 비-인간의 형상들을 발견할 수 있다. 이렇듯 세월호 사건 이후 문학은 우리가 자칫 비-인간과 절멸의 과정으로 들어설 수 있다는 사실을 진단하기도 하지만, 같이 음식을 ‘먹는 입’으로서 가족의 진정한 의미를 보여주기도 한다. 그리고 ‘인간’으로서의 개인의 얼굴과 정서와 이야기를 뚜렷하게 새겨 놓으면서, 문학은 우리가 ‘비-인간’의 길로 들어서는 통로를 막아서고 있다.

The sinking of the Sea Lake was an 'eventment' in which the nation abandoned the structure of the people, and as an 'eventment'. The Sewol ferry brought back the whole life of the subjects familiar with the logic of neoliberal competition and development. Literature produced the story and reproduced the affection of sadness, and recorded the Sewol ferry 'eventment'. The writers have shown the dynamics of language pouring ahead of literary formations as the state of the blind, and have since shifted to the literary language. The purpose of this study is to record the function and significance of the literature on the event, while following the process of literary writing after the Sewol ferry eventment. As part of this project, we analyzed the first memorial collection, 『Can we be happy? 』, in the previous research. And follow-up research on 『Hidden people』. It focuses on the shapes of 'non-human' that the works summon.
The Golem of Bang Hyun-Hee's novel is the first non-human figure. A golem is nothing but an entity with only 'body-life', that is, a man as a speaking entity, but a zoe with only 'eating mouth' remaining. When Golem ate food in front of a bereaved family at Gwanghwamun Square, he had already fallen into insensitivity to the pain of a neighboring hitter. Also, as a passive subject alive but not different from dead, only Muselman is the image of the second person. In this article, Muselman is a 'silent mouth', a silent prize in the pain of a neighboring hitter, leading himself to the threshold of the human person without escaping guilt and suicidal impulses. Lee reveals the inhuman form of these passive subjects in the most extreme way. As a passive subject possessing only the 'talking mouth', the Golem of the human body of life - human being of life, and the silent mouth, Muselman make is entered as a subject of subtraction in the normal calculation of society. These are being exterminated and exclusionary, proving the abnormality of the power of life. And if the state of exceptionality continues, racist discrimination and extermination will be at the end of the road. Kim Jong Kwang 's novel was an experiment that showed that the possibility of protecting the life and body of a person when a person is targeted as a minority or a neighbor in the neoliberal system is remarkably low and the possibility that victims or families of Sewol ferry will be the target.
The state power was born by deciding the hierarchy of the superiority of the 'talking mouth' about 'eating mouth', the superiority of 'political language' for 'freedom of life'. In addition to this, our society did not ban 'eating mouth', but gave birth to 'mouth to eat' itself. These ethical attitudes create subjects that are insensitive and unresponsive to the sorrows of their neighbors. The result is Golem as a machine that refuses to accept responsibility that can be found in this novel, and only Muselman, who becomes a living body by choosing silence to avoid responsibility, and finally, the image of a nonhuman as he enters the path of extinction. In this way, the literature after the Sewol ferry eventment can diagnose that we can enter into the process of non-human and extinction, but on the contrary, it shows the true meaning of the family as 'mouth to eat' The story is clearly marked. Literature is preventing us from going through the path of 'inhumanity'.
