설교학에서 ‘이야기’의 등장과 발전에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Appearance and Development of Narrative(Story) in Homiletics)

초록

기독교 역사 속에서 이야기는 하나님의 구원의 의도와 그리스도를 통해 계시된 하나님을 이해하는 가장 근본적인 도구였다. 또한 하나님을 이야기하는 가장 확실한 길은 이야기로 말하는 것이었다. 이야기는 명백하게 하나님의 실존과 세상의 실존을 표현해주는 가장 확실한 방법이었다. 또한 이야기는 기독교 신앙을 이해하고 그 신앙을 다음 세대에 전해주는 중요한 수단이었다. 이야기는 하나님을 드러내는 가장 근본적인 매개물이다. 그리고 이야기는 초대교회 기독교인들의 삶에서도 아주 중요하고 근본적인 것이었다.
최근 몇 십년동안 이야기는 과거를 다시 말해주며 표현해주는 기능에 대한 강조와 함께, 신학와 비평의 분야에서 깊게 활용되어왔다. 물론 이야기는 북미의 설교학의 중요한 주제였음이 분명하다. 이 연구는 포스트모던 시대를 경험하는 현대의 교회들의 설교 실제 속에서의 이야기의 역할에 대해 연구이다. 새로운 설교학(the New Homiletic)은 추상적이고 교리적이었던 기존의 북미 교회 설교를 살아있는 설교로 만드는 도구로써 ‘이야기’를 제안하고 있다. 그 당시 북미의 교회가 겪는 어려움은 성서와 강단의 전통적인 권위가 의심되는 것으로부터 시작된 것이었다. 확실한 것은 이야기가 설교학에 있어서 코페르니쿠스적인 변화(the “Copernican Revolution”)의 중심에 있어 왔다고 하는 것이다.
이야기에 대한 공헌에도 불구하고, 새로운 설교학을 향한 비평이 있다. 그것은 새로운 설교학은 이야기에 대한 심각하고 깊은 신학적인 성찰이 부족하다고 하는 것이다. 이러한 염려는 요구하는 것은 좀더 조심스럽고 깊이 수행된 성서 이야기에 대한 해석학적이고 신학적인 성찰이다. 특히, 탈자유주의 (Post-Liberal) 설교학자들은, 설교적인 관심을 방법론에 강조를 둔 새로운 설교학의 관점으로부터 성서적 그리고 신학적인 관심으로 이야기에 대한 담론을 옮겨져야 함을 주장했다.
하지만 이야기를 단지 신학적인 성찰로 제안하는 탈자유주의 신학자들의 입장은 어쩌면 이야기의 가능성을 그냥 창고에 방치하는 것과 같다. 이야기의 가능성은 그렇게 제안될 필요가 없다. 사실, 새로운 설교학의 이야기 학자들을 비판하기 위해, 찰스 캠벨(Charles Campbell)은 설교에서의 이야기의 실제적인 사용에 대한 비판적인 인식을 가지고 있다. 그러나 탈자유주의의 주요한 신학자인 한스 프라이(Hans Frei)에 대한 최근의 연구는, 이야기를 이해함에 있어 이러한 ‘형식과 내용’ 혹은 ‘방법론과 신학’ 사이의 갈등 해결의 실마리를 주고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 이야기의 등장과 발전과정을 통해서 향후 한국 설교의 방향과 발전을 전망해 보고자 한다.

영어초록

In Christian history, narrative(story) is essential to a comprehension of the saving intent of God and the revelation of God in Christ. Certainly, the authentic way of talking about God is through telling stories. Narrative is explicitly an authentic method to express the reality of God and the reality of the world. In addition, narrative is a significant factor to understand Christian faith and to deliver it to the next generation. Narrative is “a primary medium” through which God speaks and reveals God’s word. Also, narrative was also primary in the early church’s life.
Narrative(or story) has been employed in the field of theology and criticism for the past several decades, emphasizing its important function to retell and represent the past. It is also seen as one of the essential subjects in homiletic studies in North America. This research is a study of the role of the narrative in the preaching of contemporary Protestant churches for the postmodern era. The New Homiletic suggests ‘narrative’ as a source to make the abstract, doctrinal preaching in the American church alive where the traditional authority of scripture and pulpit is suspected. It is certain that there is narrative at the center of the “Copernican Revolution” in contemporary homiletics.
In spite of the contributions of the New Homiletic scholars, there are some critics. That is, serious theological and hermeneutical reflection on narrative has been lacking in the New Homiletic. This concern demands a profound and careful re-examination of hermeneutical and theological reflection on the biblical narrative. Post-liberal homileticians argues that the homiletical interest in the post-liberal age should turn away from narrow approaches to narrative which focus more on rhetorical forms for sermon than on an essential biblical and theological character of narrative.
However, to restrict narrative just in terms of theological reflection can cause it to remain stagnant in a sort of homiletical “storage.” Narrative homiletical implications do not need to be restricted in such a way. In fact, to criticize the theories of the homileticians whom he called ‘narrative homileticians,’ Charles Campbell produces the critical notion of the practical use of narrative in preaching. But, recent studies on Hans Frei who is a theological basis for post-liberal homileticians provides a clue which can solve the conflict between the form and the nature, and between methodology and theology in homiletics. This study tries to examine the future prospects of the direction and development of Korean preaching through discovering the appearance and development of the subject 'narrative.'
