초록

본 논문은 위대한 설교자로 칭송받는 John Wesley가 ‘성찬’이라는 교리적 주제를 설교에서 어떻게 이해하고 다루는가를 설교학적으로 분석하고 평가하고자 하는데 초점이 있다. John Wesley의 성찬 설교를 대상으로 하는 것은 복음 설교자인 그가 영국 국교회에 박해에도 불구하고 놀라울 정도로 성찬을 애호하기 때문이다. Methodist 탄생이 영국 국교회와의 갈등 구조와 밀접한 연관이 있고 Methodist 운동 자체가 의식 중심보다는 성령운동적 성격을 띠고 있음을 감안하면 이런 현상은 매우 특이한 것이 아닐 수 없다. 교리설교에 주안점을 둔 것은 McGrath의 정의처럼 교리가 “기독교 공동체가 자신의 정체성 형성에 필수적인 요소”로 오늘의 혼탁한 기독교 신앙에 매우 중요하기 때문이다. 특별히 교회와 성도의 올바른 신앙정립을 위해, 이단 사설의 공격으로부터 순전한 복음을 수호하기 위해, 그리고 성도들에게 온전한 기독교적 가치관을 제공하기 위해 교리에 대한 설교는 반드시 필요하다.
이러한 연구의 동인 위에서 본 연구자는 먼저 John Wesley가 성찬에 대해 보인 친화적 태도와 그 배경에 대해 조사하였다. 그의 성찬 애호는 청교도와 영국 국교회 전통 양자를 지닌 부모의 신앙교육, 옥스퍼드 대학 시절의 경건훈련, 영국 국교회에 대한 관심, Nonjuror의 영향 그리고 Wesley 자신의 의식을 선호하는 경향성 등 다양한 요소가 그 배경을 이루고 있다. 본 논문은 『웨슬리 설교전집』에 실린 150편의 설교 중에서 특별히 두 편의 성찬설교를 대상으로 교리설교적 측면에서 분석한다. 연구에 의하면 John Wesley는 9편의 일반 설교에서도 성도의 신앙 비판, 신앙촉구 그리고 기독교 본질 설명 등 목회적 필요에 의해 성찬을 언급한 것으로 나타난다.
두 편의 성찬 설교중 하나는 성찬에 반대하는 교인들을 대상으로 1732년 작성된 ‘성찬을 규칙적으로 시행해야 할 의무’이다. John Wesley는 이 설교가 당시 성공회 예배학자들의 저서를 인용하여 주로 성례전에 관한 교리와 요강이 주된 내용을 이루고 있었다고 주장한다. 하지만 이런 주장과 달리 이 설교는 성찬의 신학은 깊이 다루지 않고 단지 성경에 나타난 용어를 그대로 인용하여 성찬을 상징과 기념으로 그리고 하나님의 명령과 성도의 의무로 표현할 뿐이다. 설교내용은 주로 성찬을 소홀히 하는 사람들의 이유를 거론하고 그에 대해 조목조목 반박하는데 초점이 맞춰져 있다.
다른 한 편의 성찬 설교는 1746년 설교집에 수록된 ‘은총의 수단’으로, 외적인 의식을 경솔히 여기는 일부 Methodist들을 염두에 둔 설교이다. 이 설교는 은총의 수단에 대한 신학적 정의와 은총의 수단에 대한 구체적인 소개에 이어 반대자들의 견해에 대한 반박과 은총의 수단을 사용하는 수단과 방법으로 이루어져 있다. 이 설교에서 John Wesley는 성찬을 주님의 명령으로, 은총의 수단으로 이해한다.
이들 두 편의 설교에 쓰인 설득기법을 보면 전자는 이성을, 후자는 성경을 주된 소재로 활용하여 논쟁적으로 진행한다. 이런 전개 방법에는 John Wesley 자신뿐 아니라 청교도 및 Jonathan Edwards의 설교방법론 그리고 Erasmus 전통 등이 녹아들어 있다. 하지만 설교에 나타난 성찬에 대한 신학은 상징 과 기념 등 문자적 소개와 은총의 수단으로서의 성찬이라는 성찬의 효능에 치중할 뿐, 웨슬리 성찬 이해 전체를 전달하지 못한다. John Wesley의 성찬 설교는 교리설교의 장점과 한계 그리고 새로운 방법의 필요성을 우리에게 숙제로 제시한다.

This thesis focuses on analyzing and evaluating the doctrinal theme of 'the Eucharist' by John Wesley, who is praised as a great preacher, in a preaching manner. The reason why I want to study John Wesley's eucharistic sermon is because John Wesley, an evangelical preacher, loves the eucharist surprisingly despite persecution in the Church of England. This phenomenon is very unusual considering that the birth of a Methodist is closely related to the conflict structure with the Church of England and that the Methodist movement itself is more of a Holy Spirit movement than a consciousness center.
The reason we focus on doctrinal sermons is because, like McGrath's definition, doctrine is so important to today's turbulent Christian faith that "the Christian community is essential to the formation of their identity." For the right establishment of faith in the church and the saint, especially to protect the pure gospel from the attack of heresy editorials, and to provide the saints with a complete Christian value, preaching about doctrine is essential.
In the above study, the researcher first examined the affinity attitude and background of John Wesley's sacrament. John Wesley's sacrament adoration is based on various factors such as his parents' faith education with both Puritans and English Church traditions, the pious training at Oxford University, his interest in the English Church, the influence of Nonjuror, and his tendency to prefer Wesley's own consciousness.
This thesis analyzes two Eucharistic sermons in the aspect of doctrine preaching, especially among 150 preachings in the Wesley Preaching Collection. According to the study, John Wesley mentioned the eucharist in nine general sermons by pastoral needs such as the criticism of the believers, the desire for faith, and the explanation of the Christian essence. One of the two sacramental sermons is ‘The Duty of Constant Community,’ written in 1732 for members who oppose the sacrament. John Wesley argues that the sermon was mainly composed of doctrines about the sacrament, citing the books of Anglican worshipologists at the time. However, unlike this claim, this sermon does not deal with the theology of the sacrament deeply, but merely quotes the terms in the Bible as they are, expressing the sacrament as a symbol and a memorial, and as the duty of God's command. The contents of the sermon are mainly focused on the reasons for those who neglect the sacrament and refuting it in a way. The other sacramental sermon is ‘The Means of Grace,’ which was included in the 1746 Preaching Book, with some Methodists in mind who are indiscreet of the moravian suffrage and external rituals.
This sermon consists of a theological definition of the means of grace and a concrete introduction of the means of grace, followed by refutations of the views of opponents and means and methods of using the means of grace. In this sermon, Wesley understands the sacrament as the command of the Lord, as a means of grace. In terms of persuasion techniques used in these two sermons, the former uses reason and the latter uses the Bible as the main material to proceed in a controversial way. This development method includes the sermon methodology of Puritans and Jonathan Edwards as well as Wesley himself, and the Erasmus tradition.
However, the theology of the sacrament in the sermon focuses on the efficacy of the sacrament as a means of grace and the introduction of letters such as symbols and memorials, and does not convey the whole understanding of the sacrament of Wesley. John Wesley's sacramental sermon presents us with the advantages and limitations of the doctrinal preaching and the need for a new method as a homework.
