金濤 『周易淺說』의 義理易學 연구 (A Study on Kim Do’s Juyeokcheonseol from the Perspective of the Book of Changes in Terms of Morality)

초록

본 논문은 조선 중기 학자 金濤(1580~1646)의 『주역천설』의 의리적 역 해석에 관해 연구한 것이다. 『주역천설』은 六十四卦의 「大象傳」만을 대상으로 그에 대한 저자 자신의 해석을 서술한 저술이다. 공자 십익 가운데 하나인 「대상전」은 군자의 도덕 수양과 정치적 실천의 내용을 주로 담고 있어, 주자의 『근사록』, 남명의 『학기유편』, 율곡의 『성학집요』의 경우처럼 유학자들의 저술에서 전거로서 자주 인용되었다. 『주역천설』은 유학자들이 자기 사상을 피력하기 위한 전거로 주로 인용하던 「대상전」만을 대상으로 한 최초의 저술이라는 의의를 갖는다.
그런데 김도는 『주역천설』을 편찬하면서 「대상전」의 원문 자체에 대한 주석이나 정확한 해석에 관심을 두기보다는 주로 그 자신이 읽고 터득한 내용을 서술하는 방식을 취하였다. 『주역천설』은 「대상전」의 내용을 빌려 김도 자신의 사상을 피력하고 있는 저술인 것이다. 이러한 김도의 서술 방식은 『주역천설』이 상수나 점서로서의 관심이 아니라 역을 통해 의리를 말하고자 하는 의리적 관심에서 저술되었음을 의미한다.
김도의 『주역천설』이 「대상전」의 내용에 대한 충실한 해석을 목표하기보다 그 자신이 터득한 의리를 말하는 수단으로 저술되었다는 점에서 그 내용에 있어서도 기존의 주석들과는 다른 김도만의 독자적인 해석이 나타나고 있다. 특히 군주의 의무가 養民에 있다는 井卦의 해석이나, 국가의 창업기에 있어서는 세자의 교육이 중요하다는 屯卦의 해석, 그리고 공부론에 있어 점진주의를 강조하는 등의 해석은 김도의 개인적 경험과 그의 독자적인 사상이 반영된 해석이라 하겠다. 조선시대 『주역』연구의 주류적 입장과는 일정한 거리가 있지만 『주역천설』은 조선 시대 의리역 해석의 한 단면을 살필 수 있는 저술이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study attempted the philosophical interpretation of Kim Do’s (1580~1646) Juyeokcheonseol from the perspective of the Book of Changes in terms of morality. Juyeokcheonseol is Kim Do’s interpretation limited to Daesangjeon of the 64-hexagrams. Daesangjeon, which is one of Confucius’ Ten Wings, carries contents related to virtuous men’s moral cultivation and political practices, and along with Zhu Xi’s Geunsarok, Nam Myeong’s Hakgiyupyeon, and Yulgok’s Seonghakjipyo, it was quoted often as an authority by Confucian scholars in their writings. Juyeokcheonseol is meaningful in that it was the first book in the Joseon Dynasty that focused only on Daesangjeon, which had been quoted as an authority by Confucian scholars for expressing their thoughts.
In writing Juyeokcheonseol, however, Kim Do described what he read and realized rather than taking interest in accurate annotation or interpretation of the texts of Daesangjeon. Accordingly, Juyeokcheonseol is rather the expression of Kim Do’s own thoughts based on the contents of Daesangjeon. Kim Do’s way of description as such means that he wrote Juyeokcheonseol not out of his interest in Xiangshu or divination but out of his interest in morality, intending to discuss morality through the Book of Changes.
In that Kim Do’s Juyeokcheonseol did not aim at faithful interpretation of the contents of Daesangjeon but he wrote it as a means to explain morality of which he had gained understanding, the book shows Kim Do’s original interpretation distinguished from the previous commentaries. In particular, his interpretation of Jeonggwei that the king’s obligations are to people, interpretation of Dungwei that education of the crown prince is important during the foundational period of a nation, and emphasis on gradualism in the Gongbu Theory reflect Kim Do’s personal experiences and his original thoughts. Although his writing deviated some distance from the mainstream of Zhouyi (The Book of Changes) research in the Joseon Dynasty, Juyeokcheonseol is considered to give us a glimpse to the interpretation of the Book of Changes in terms of morality in the Joseon Dynasty.
