程明道의 仁說 연구 (I) (A Study on the Ren(Benevolence) Theory of ChengMingDao (I))

초록

이 글은 북송(北宋)의 유학자인 정호(程顥:1032-1085, 호는 明道)의 仁 사상을 우주론과 존재론의 측면에서 체계적으로 분석하고 해명한 것이다. 먼저 우주론의 관점에서 仁의 본질을 고찰하면, 仁은 생도(生道)와 생의(生意)라는 두 가지 특징을 함축한다. 이때 생도는 천도(天道)의 부단한 창조성을 가리키고, 생의는 각 개체의 고유한 생명의 의지를 가리킨다. 다음으로 존재론의 관점에서 보면, 이러한 仁의 우주론적 본질과 특징은 독특한 존재 논리와 근거로 전개되는데 일본(一本), 감응(感應), 철상철하(徹上徹下)가 그것이다. 먼저, 일본은 명도 사상에서 가장 독창적인 개념 가운데 하나로서 그것은 천도(天道)와 인도(人道)의 근원은 완전히 동일하다는 천인무간(天人無間)을 핵심으로 한다. 다음으로, 감응(感應)은 모든 사물의 자기 생성과 존재 방식의 기제(mechanism)를 설명한 것으로 한 사물이나 사태는 오직 가장 근원적인 두 가지 상이한 속성과 운동의 대립과 통일에 의해서만 발생하고 전개된다는 것이다. 마지막으로, 철상철하는 두 가지 의미를 지닌다. 하나는 존재론의 측면에서 ‘도즉기(道卽器)’, 곧 형이상(形而上)과 형이하(形而下)의 존재가 철저하게 하나로 관통되어 있다는 것을 천명한 것이고, 다른 하나는 수양론의 측면에서 하학(下學)과 상달(上達)이 완전히 통일되어 있다는 것을 가리킨다. 이처럼 명도가 우주론과 존재론의 측면에서 仁 사상의 근거와 배경을 정립한 까닭은 무엇보다도 천인합일(天人合一)이라는 궁극적 이념을 전제로 구인(求仁) 공부의 최고 경계로서 ‘일(一)’을 제기하려고 했기 때문이다. 이때 일(一)은 수양의 주체와 타자가 조금의 간극도 없이 완전히 하나가 된 상태를 상징하는 것으로 오직 주-객의 대립과 갈등으로 상징되는 이분법적 가치와 논리를 철저하게 극복했을 때에만 비로소 완전하게 체현되는 성인의 이상적인 경지로 볼 수 있다. 명도의 전체 仁 사상에서 이러한 우주론과 존재론적 구도와 의의는 이후 전개된 그의 구체적인 仁說의 사상적 토대를 이룬다.

영어초록

This research systematically explains and analyzes the theory of 仁(Ren, benevolence) proposed by CheongHao, one of Confucian scholars in BeiSong, from the point of Cosmology and Ontology. First, to investigate the essence of 仁 theory from Cosmology’s perspective, 仁 connotes two characteristics, which is ShengDao (Cosmic Creativity itself) and Shengyi(Vitality). In this context, ShengDao refers to the continuous creativity of the law of Heaven while Shengyi points to the individual’s own willingness to live. Next, from Ontology’s perspective, these Cosmological essence and features of 仁 develop through unique logic and theoretical bases of existence, which are Yiben(Monism), Ganying(cosmic resonance) and Cheshangchexia (penetrating from the bottom to the top). To start with, Yiben(Monism) is one of the most creative concepts among theory of MingDao, which centers around the idea of TianRenWujian(harmony between the heaven and human), meaning that the origins of the way of Heaven and the way of Human are the same. Next, Ganying illustrates the mechanism of self-creation and existence of every object, illustrating how one object or situation can only be produced and unfolded through the conflicts and unification of two most essentially different features and movement. Lastly, Cheshangchexia implies two meanings. One is DaojiQi from the perpective of Ontology, which declares that the existence of Xingershang(The upper principle or law) and Xingerxia(The lower materials or objects) is thoroughly penetrated in unilateral way and the other one is that from self-cultivation theory‘s aspect, Xiaxue and Shangda is completely unified. The reason why MingDao established its basis and background of Ren theory from the perspective of Cosmology and Ontology is to propose ‘Yi(Oneness, Unification)’ as the utmost boundary in the study of QiuRen(seeking benevolence) under the premise of TianRenheyi(harmony between the heaven and human) as the ultimate philosophy. In this respect, Yi symbolizes the state of complete synchronization between the One and the Other of self-cultivation without even the slightest disparity, an ideal stage of the Saint which can only be embodied when the dichotomous value and logic represented by the conflicts and confrontation between subject and object have been overcome. The structure and implications of Cosmology and Ontology within MingDao’s Ren theory in general forms the theoretical basis for his RenShuo that developed subsequently.
