薛泰熙의 『大學』 해석 연구 (A Study on the Interpretations of Great Learningby Seol Tae-hee)

초록

이 글은 薛泰熙(1875-1940)의 『대학』 해석을 분석한 것으로 그 요지는 다음과 같다.
해석의 기본관점은, 1)『대학』을 大人之學으로 보되 주자와 달리 修身을 통해 인격을 완성하는 것으로 보았고, 2)『대학』의 핵심을 주자가 修己治人으로 본 것과 달리 修身에 중점을 둔 것으로 보았으며, 3)주자의 三綱領說을 따르지 않고 明德을 體, 親民을 用, 至善을 極則으로 보는 體用極則說을 주장하였고, 4)주자의 八條目說을 따르지 않고 八次序로 보아 修身의 身과 格物의 物을 인식의 주체와 대상으로 나누어 八次序區別說을 주장하였다.
분장과 편차개정의 특징을 살펴본 결과, 다음과 같은 특징을 도출하였다. 형식적인 특징으로는, 1)古本大學을 저본으로 分章하고 編次를 개정한 점, 2)주자처럼 經文․傳文으로 나누어 해석한 점, 3)전 제1장부터 제5장까지만 편차를 개정하였을 뿐 나머지는 주자의 『대학장구』와 동일한 점, 4)傳文에 釋止章을 둔 점, 5)聽訟節을 격물치지의 사례로 본 것 등을 들 수 있다. 내용적인 특징으로는, 1)전 제2장은 親民을 해석한 것으로 보아 친민이 止於至善한 효능으로 본 것, 2)전 제3장은 至善을 해석한 것으로 보아 명명덕․친민이 至善에 이르러야 함을 말한 것으로 본 것, 3)전 제4장은 止於至善의 止를 해석한 것으로 보아 止를 강조한 것, 4)전 제5장은 聽訟節을 格物致知의 사례를 말한 것으로 본 것 등을 들 수 있다.
새로운 해석의 요지로는, 1)明德을 良知․素仁의 뜻을 겸한 것으로 본 것, 2)親民을 程子․朱子처럼 新으로 바꾸지 않고 親愛․親近으로 본 것, 3)至善을 中正한 正心處로 본 것, 4)格物을 언제 어디서나 사물을 대하는 것으로 致知를 나의 감각이 따라 생기는 것으로 해석한 것, 5)격물치지를 인식주체인 身이 인식대상인 物을 대하면서 이루어지는 인식작용으로 보아 知行合一과 밀접하게 연관된 것으로 본 것, 6)모든 사람이 修身으로 근본을 삼아야 한다는 점에 중점을 두어 수신제가장 이하를 주자가 上行下效로 본 관점을 비판하며 군주 한 사람에게 모든 책임을 돌린 것이 아니라고 한 것, 7)정심수신장의 ‘身有所忿懥’의 身에 대해 程子가 心의 오자로 본 설을 따르지 않고 五官을 총칭하는 것으로 본 것 등을 들 수 있다.
이러한 해석의 특징은 왕수인의 『대학』 해석에서 영향을 받은 바가 크다. 그러나 그는 왕수인의 설을 그대로 추종하지 않고 그 설을 근본으로 하여 자신의 독자적인 견해를 펴고 있는 것이 돋보인다.

영어초록

This study analyzed the interpretations of Great Learning by Seol Tae-hee(1875-1940), and the analysis results can be summarized as follows: When analyzing the book, he kept four basic perspectives: 1) he believed that the completion of personality depended on Sushin unlike Zhu Xi based on the recognition of Great Learning as Daeinjihak; 2) he found the core of Great Learning in Sushin unlike Zhu Xi that did in Sugichiin; 3) he argued for Cheyonggeukchik Theory, which perceived Myeongdeok, Chinmin, and Jiseon as Che, Yong, and Geukchin, respectively, instead of following Samgangryeong Theory by Zhu Xi; and 4) he insisted on Palchaseo and advocated the Palchaseo Distinction Theory by distinguishing Shin of Sushin and Mul of Gyeokmul as the subject and object of perception instead of following Paljomok Theory by Zhu Xi.
The study also examined his interpretations in terms of division and sequential edition revision features, and the identified features were as follows:the form features include 1) division and sequential edition revision of Great Learning in Gobon as in Jeobon; 2) interpretation of Great Learning into Gyeongmun and Jeonmun like Zhu Xi; 3) sequential edition revision of the book only from Chapter 1 to Chapter 5 with the remaining chapters being the same as Daehakjanggu by Zhu Xi; 4) putting Seokjijang in Jeonmun; and 5) regarding Cheongsongjeol as a case of Gyeokmulchiji. The content features include 1) perceiving Chinmin as the efficacy of Jieojiseon by devoting the entire Chapter 2 to the interpretation of Chinmin; 2) contending that Myeongmyeongdeok and Chinmin should reach Jiseon by devoting the entire Chapter 3 to the interpretation of Jiseon; 3) putting an emphasis on Ji by devoting the entire Chapter 4 to the interpretation of Ji from Jieojiseon; and 4) regarding Cheongsongjeol as a case of Gyeokmulchiji in Chapter 5.
His new interpretations can be summarized as follows:1) understanding Myeongdeok as a combination of Yangji and Soin; 2) perceiving Chinmin as Chinae and Chingeun rather than turning it into Shin like Jeongja and Zhu Xi; 3) regarding Jiseon as Jeongshimcheo of Jungjeong; 4) interpreting Gyeokmul as dealing with objects any place and any time and Chiji as one's senses emerging subsequently; 5) understanding Gyeokmulchiji as the cognitive functioning taking place when Shin, the subject of cognition, deals with Mul, the object of cognition, and finding its close connections with Jihaenghap; 6) criticizing Zhu Xi's perspective of regarding Sushinjegajang, Jegachigukjang, and Chigukpyeongcheonhajang as Sanghaenghahyo by focusing on that all people should find a basis in Sushin and maintaining that not all the responsibilities were attributed to a single monarch; and 7) regarding Shin of "Shinyusobunchi" from Jeongshimsushinjang as a generic term for the five sensory organs instead of following the view of regarding Jeongja as the misspelling of Shim. Those features of his interpretations were considerably influenced by Wang Su-in's interpretations of Great Learning, but he stood out by developing his own views based on Wang's theories instead of following them as they were.
