Abstract

The Influence of the Missionary Spirit of Francis of Assisi
on the Korean Churches

The purpose of mission is to bring up native leader. Missionary has to leave no traces of land and building, but of mankind. The medieval churches were spiritually adulterous and decomposed, and they were approximately collapsed. However, Francis of Assisi(1182-1226) recovered his spirituality and personality, and brought up spiritual leaders without hesitation. He organized the Brothers Minor called Friars Minor at Portiuncula Church and led a handful of people at the first time, but it increased to 5,000 members, and became a center of spiritual revival and overseas mission in the medieval times. Ultimately, the Brothers Minor became the mecca reviving the medieval churches being withered in the 13th century. For instance, Raymond Lull, John of Monte Corvino, and his disciples originated from the Brothers Minor disregarded their life, and delivered the Gospel to Syria, Morocco, Egypt, Germany, France, England, and even China. Francis's spiritual vein has been connected more than 800 years after his birth, and his spirit indicates clearly how the Korean churches join in world mission effectively and set up reasonable missionary strategies.
Now the Korean churches have severely confronted anti-Christian atmosphere after Afghanistan accident in 2007. It is said that the Korean churches are faced with a crucial moment with one consent. People say that the Korean churches have many points of likeness to the medieval churches in the 13th century. They take pride in sending 17,000 missionaries to 170 nations until now. But it is time to ask ourselves how the Korean churches have brought up spiritual leader in the mission field like Francis of Assisi. The Korean churches have to switch to train native leader. This article has a purpose to investigate Francis's work from a missiological perspective, study the medieval society and the European churches in the 13th century, examine how the Brothers Minor has been trained and devoted to impart their spirit to throughout the European districts, and research how to apply the missionary spirit of Francis of Assisi to the Korean churches.
