1960년대 한국영화 선전지 연구 —‘극장신문’을 중심으로 (A Study on the Korean Film Publicity Magazine in the 1960s―Focusing on Theater Newspaper)

초록

본고는 1960년대 서울 지역 각 극장 및 제작사에서 자체적으로 발행한 선전지 ‘극장신문’에 대한 연구이다. 구체적으로 한국영화의 ‘전성기’ 업계 발행 프로그램을 토대로 매체를 통한 영화의 홍보 방식을 논의할 것이다.
먼저 극장신문은 제작사와 극장 선전부의 입장과 목표를 가공 없이 전달한다는 점에서 업계 동향을 읽을 수 있는 자료로, 발행 주체는 극장 혹은 제작사의 선전부로 구분된다. 또한 극장신문의 독자는 영화애호가나 전문독자층을 넘어, 극장을 찾을 가능성이 있는 잠재 관객으로서의 독자였다. 이에 따라 극장신문은 화보 등을 다양하게 배치해 독자의 주의를 끌고자 했고, 이들이 궁금해 할 법한 영화 촬영 뒷이야기가 실었다. 다음으로 극장신문은 관객 반응을 강조했고, 극장 관련 정보를 담았으며, 독자를 잠재 관객으로 유인하기 위한 이벤트를 준비하는 등의 특징을 지닌다. 극장신문은 궁극적으로 영화를 홍보하는 것을 목적으로 했지만, 발행 주체인 선전부는 나름의 사명감을 갖고 영화 인력에 대한 상세한 정보나 심도 있는 영화평 등 전문적인 읽을거리를 배치하면서 영화 ‘정보지’를 만들고자 했다.
본고는 1960년대 극장신문을 논의하며 발행주체와 독자층, 그리고 지면 구성과 지향점 등을 다각적으로 살펴보며 영화 매체 연구의 지평을 넓히고자 했다. 현재 확보된 분량만을 연구 대상으로 삼았다는 한계가 있지만, 당대 영화계의 동향을 지금까지와는 다른 시선에서 고찰하는 기반이 되기를 기대한다.

영어초록

This study is on Theater Newspaper, a public relations magazine published autonomously by each theater and production company in Seoul in the 1960s. A method of publicizing a movie through media will be discussed specifically on the basis of a program issued by the business circles in the ‘heyday’ of Korean film.
First of all, the theater newspaper is divided the entity of publication into the publicity department of a theater or a production company as the material available for reading a trend of business community in that the position and goal of the publicity department in a theater and a production company are delivered without processing. Also, the readers of theater newspaper were those that were potentially attendees of theater, beyond the movie fans or the specialized reading population. Accordingly, the theater newspaper tried to attract the readers’ attention by diversely mapping out pictorials and others, and published behind-the-scenes insights of the movie production that may interest readers. Sequentially, the theater newspaper emphasized audiences’ responses, contained theater-related information, and has a characteristic such as preparing for an event for luring readers as potential audiences. The theater newspaper aimed to ultimately promote a motive. But the publicity department, which is the main agent of publication, attempted to make the film ‘information magazine’ while arranging the specialized reading materials such as the detailed information on movie personnel or as the in-depth film review with having own sense of mission.
This study had the objective of broadening the horizon of a research on film media by multi-laterally examining the publication entity and the reading population, and the contents composition and orientation through discussing the theater newspapers in the 1960s. There is a limit as saying of having taken research subject only as the currently-secured volumes. However, it is expected to become the foundation of considering a trend of movie circles at that time from different attention from the days so far.
