김명국 禪宗인물화의 작품세계와 禪氣的 특성 (A study on Kim Myeong-guk's figure painting of Zen Buddhism and Seon Vitality’s Characteristics)

초록

본 논문은 조선중기 선종화가를 대표하는 연담(蓮潭) 김명국(金明國, 1600~1662) 의 선종인물화의 작품세계에 나타난 선기적(禪氣的) 특성에 대하여 고찰한 것 이다. 김명국은 고전적 화풍을 견지해온 고준한 화원(畫員) 출신이었음에도 불 구하고 호방하고 기운 생동한 선화(禪畵)적 세계관을 펼침으로써 당대는 물론 현재까지도 화단의 절대적 평가를 차지하고 있다. 그의 작품세계는 고려 말과 조선 초 남종화(南宗畵) 유입의 결과였으며, 다음 세대인 조선후기로까지 이어 져 새로운 민족적 화풍으로 발전할 수 있는 토대가 되었다. 특히 김명국의 선 종인물화(禪宗人物畵)는 선화를 논함에 있어 독보적 가치를 지니고 있으며, 그의 작품에서 발현되는 선기적 특성은 매우 심오하며, 선종의 궁극적 이상인 묘오 (妙悟)의 세계에 근접해 있다. 김명국 선종인물화의 선기적 특성은 ‘간선(簡選) 의 일기(逸氣), 무욕(無欲)의 청정(淸淨), 생동(生動)의 일필(逸筆), 심의(心意)의 선기 (禪氣)’로 정리하였다. 그의 선종화는 겉으로만 보여지는 화려한 외형적 양식보 다 정신적 깨달음과 참됨을 구현하였으며, 필묵의 기세가 호방하고 분방하여 작품마다 생생약동하고 유유자적한 기운생동의 필력이 놀라웠다. 또 담묵(淡 墨)과 농묵(濃墨)을 자유자재하는 화법으로 원근과 여백의 미를 펼쳐냈다. 동시 에 그는 딱딱하고 정형화된 화법을 고집하지 않고, 인간 본연의 따뜻한 심상과 생활 속에서 선심(禪心)을 회복하려는 화의(畫意)를 표방하였다. 다채로운 표정과 해학적 요소를 과감히 시도한 그는 색채, 필선, 공간, 전신사조(傳神寫照)로서 의 선종화를 통해 선의 묘미를 발현하였다. 김명국이 이뤄 낸 선종인물화의 독 창적 입지와 선기적 요소는 조선중기 화단에 활기 넘치는 역동성을 이끌어 냈 을 뿐만 아니라, 암울한 시대를 극복하고자 했던 민중들에게 위안과 희망을 주 었으며, 중국과 일본회화에도 영향을 미침으로써 한국의 회화적 위상과 외교 적 입지를 크게 높였다.

This paper examines the Seon Vitality’s characteristics of the Zen Buddhist paintings of Kim Myeong-guk(1600~1662), a representative of the Middle Chosun Dynasty Zen Buddhist’s painter. Although Kim Myeong-guk was a highly-trained artist from art academy who has maintained a classical style, he pursued a view of the world of Zen that has magnanimous and being full of life. So he still holds the absolute reputation of the art world at that time and at present. His work world was the result of the influx of NamJongHwa in the early Joseon Dynasty from the end of the Korea Dynasty. It continued to the next generation, the late Joseon Dynasty, and became the basis for the development of a new ethnic style. And Joseon Dynasty was a Renaissance of painting and was attracted attention from the world painting’s history. In particular, Kim Myeong-guk's Zen Buddhist figure painting has a unique value in the discussion of Zen’s painting, and Seon Vitality through to his art is very profound and has been approached the mysterious world, ultimate ideal of Zen buddhism. Seon Vitality’s characteristics of Zen Buddhist figure painting are the ‘Simple comfort, Clean without greed, A vibrant handwriting, Meaningful Seon Vitality.’ His Zen Buddhist painting pursued spiritual enlightenment and truthfulness rather than the colorful outward form that appears only on the surface and the vigor of his brushwork is magnanimous and being wild, so it is surprising that his brush work is full of energy and vivid. In addition, he unfolded the beauty of the perspective and space by freely using a technique called ‘light ink’ and ‘dark ink’. At the same time, he did not insist on rigid and the standard pattern, but seek painting meaning to recover Zen in the warmth of human nature and life. He experimented with various facial expressions and humorous elements, and he expressed the charm of the line through Zen Buddhist paintings that are as a coloring, brush work, space and being not only just to reproduce the figure of a person but also spirit. Unique position and Seon Vitality’s elements of Zen Buddhist paintings that are Kim Myeong-guk has made not only led to energetic dynamism in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty but also gave comfort and hope to the people who wanted to overcome the gloomy era and also influenced Chinese and Japanese paintings. By doing so, he greatly improved Korea’s painting status and diplomatic position.
