Photographs are discolored by the time. Faded photos are not good for viewing, and they also decline in commercial value. Conventional color photographs showed discoloration in a short time. So the art photograph was not expensive art. Therefore art photographs have a higher proportion of black and white photographs than color photographs. Now, however, most photographic works are printed with durable pigments. Even the manufacturer advertises the 200 years as lifetime of the photograph.
In this study, we investigated whether the lifespan of a color photograph, which was thought to be short in the life of the photograph, was actually extended due to the use of pigment ink. Especially, the durability of paintings and photographs are compared. Compared with pigment ink used in photography with oil painting inks and acrylic inks used in arts.
The results of the study show that the photographic prints used pigment ink have the same durability as the oil painting. In addition, the degree of discoloration is very low for images protected with acrylic or glass. Now, photographs can be viewed as a genre that can be enjoyed for a long time while maintaining the image quality as oil paintings.
