선진 유가의 선왕관에 반영된 윤리와 정치 (The Ethics and Politics Reflected in the Pre-Qin Confucian View of the Early Kings)

초록

본문에서는 선진 유가 경전에 보이는 삼대(三代) 선왕의 사례 가운데 각자의 사상적 특징을 반영한 것을 중심으로 개괄하였다. 선진 유가의 논의 과정에서 가장 두드러진 사례는 왕조 및 왕위 계승 방식이 “선양”인가의 여부, 그 과정에서 “찬탈”혹은 “시해”가 있었는가의 여부이다. 당시 백가쟁명의 과정에서 이와 관련된 여러 가지 논란이 있었던 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이러한 상황이 발생한 근본적 원인은 겸병전쟁을 통해 장차 다가오는 천하통일의 추세를 전제로 통일 방식과 통일 뒤의 치세 방안에 대한 이해 방식의 차이에서 비롯된 것이다. 다시 말하면 제가들은 각각의 정치 윤리적 이념을 근거로 현재와 미래 방향에 선왕의 사례를 원용하여 대안을 제시한 것으로 이해된다.
선진 유가에서는 삼대 선왕의 사례를 통해 왕위 계승과 왕조 교체는 모두 “민심의 향배”에 따른 것이라 하여 인위적인 교체 방식을 부정하였다. 다만 구체적인 사례에 대한 설명과 통일 방식에 대해서는 차이가 있었다. 맹자는 성선에 기반한 왕도에 의해 천하통일이 가능하다고 보고 선왕의 사례를 통해서 이것을 증명하고자 하였다. 특히 순(舜)이 불우한 가정환경을 “대효”(大孝)를 통해 극복하고, 요임금을 돕는 과정을 통해 천하 민심을 확보하여 끝내 왕위에 오르는 과정은 가장 이상적인 표본이었다.
순자도 삼대의 선왕의 사례를 두루 원용하고, 나아가 주공과 성왕의 왕위 계승 또한 선양이 아니라 민심의 향배에 따른 자연스러운 추세로 파악하였다. 그러나 순자가 선왕의 사례에서 주목하는 내용은 도덕성보다는 사회성이다. 다만 공자 또한 선왕으로 높이는 순자의 입장에서는 도덕성이나 민심의 향배보다 무력을 우선하는 선왕의 사례를 찾기 어려웠다. 따라서 순자는 “후왕”이라는 새로운 개념을 도입하여 상대적으로 현실에 적용할 수 있는 이념을 거기에 담고자 한 것이다.

영어초록

In the main text, each case of the kings of three generations of Xia, Yin and Zhou(夏殷周) in Pre-Qin scriptures was summarized focusing on their respective ideological characteristics. The most noticeable cases in the process of discussing Pre-Qin Confucianism are about whether the way of succeeding dynasty or the throne was “abdication of the throne” or not, and whether “usurpation” or “assassination” was committed in that process or not. It’s been proved that there were a lot of controversies related to them in the process of free discussion of those times. The basic reason for this situation lay in the differences in the understanding of the way of unification and reign after unification on the condition of the tendency of upcoming unification of the whole country through wars. In other words, various schools seem to have suggested alternatives for the direction of the present and the future quoting the former kings’ cases based on their own political and ethical ideology.
Arguing that succession of the throne and change of dynasty all had followed the drift of the public sentiments through the cases of the kings of three generations, Pre-Qin Confucianism denied artificial way of change. Yet, there were differences in the explanation and unification ways of the specific cases. Mencius believed that unification of the whole nation was possible through kingship based on fundamentally good human nature, and tried to prove it through the former kings’ cases. In particular, it was the most ideal example that Emperor Shun(舜) had overcome his underprivileged family background through “great filial piety”, won popularity of the whole nation through the process of helping the king, and finally risen to the throne. Xun Kuang also quoted various cases of the former kings of three generations, and moreover, understood that the succession of the throne by Duke of Zhou(周公) and King Cheng(成王) had followed a natural trend of the public sentiments, not abdication. Yet, what Xun Kuang focused on in the case of the former kings was sociality rather than morality. However, Xun Kuang, who honored Confucius also as a late king, couldn’t find the example of a former king who had taken priority over military force, not over morality or the drift of public sentiments. Therefore, Xun Kuang introduced a new concept of “a later king”(後王) and tried to include an idea relatively applicable to the reality in it.
