『禪苑淸規』의 職制變化에 대한 考察 (Study on the Organizational Changes in the Rules of Purity for Seon)

초록

중국선종사에 있어 백장청규의 제정은 선종교단의 독립과 발전의 큰 기틀을 세웠다. 백장청규의 가장 큰 특징은 시대의 변화에 따라 수행 가풍을 새롭게 마련했다는 점이다. 청규는 율(律)의 정신을 바탕으로 이루어진 선종교단의 수행과 생활양식의 규범서이다. 당시 선종은 율원에 병합되어 수행 법도가 적합지 않아 여러 가지 문제점이 대두되었다. 이에 백장은 보청법을 바탕으로 선원의 경제적 독립을 이루고 새로운 선종교단을 형성한 것이다. 특히 대 규모 교단을 운영함에 있어 직제(職制)를 두어 대중공의에 따라 수행에 도움이 될 수 있도록 하였다.
백장 고청규에는 주지(住持) 아래 십무(十務)라는 직제의 명칭만이 언급되지만, 송대(宋代)에 편찬된 『선원청규(禪苑淸規)』에는 십무(十務)를 구체적으로 사지사(四知事)와 육두수(六頭首)로 구분하고 세부적으로는 40여개의 직제로 구성되었다. 이처럼 총림(叢林)내에 다양한 직제와 소임이 갖추어진 것은 시대의 변화와 사원 경제의 발전에 따른 결과이다.
본 연구는 청규에 나타난 직제변화를 살펴보기 위해 세 가지 측면에서 고찰하였다. 첫째는 직위의 명칭은 같지만, 당대(唐代) 百丈의 고청규와 송대(宋代)의 『禪苑淸規』에 이르러서는 의미와 역할이 바뀐 경우이다. 예를 들면, 化主의 직위(職位)는 고청규 당시에는 주지 방장의 직위로서 교화의 주인이며, 대중의 최고 지도자였다. 후대에 이르러서는 화주는 시주를 권하는 역할로 바뀐 것이다. 둘째는 사원운영이 다양해지고 직제가 분화됨으로써 새롭게 생긴 경우이다. 고두(庫頭)는 사원의 경제형태가 대 규모화 되면서 새로 나타난 형태이다. 셋째는 총림이 대규모화 되면서 직제와 관련해 고청규(古淸規)에서는 十務의 형태만 보였지만, 宋代 이후에는 40여개의 직제로 분화 발전되었다는 점이다.
주지하듯이, 조사선(祖師禪)수행의 본질은 日常性에 있다. 일상 수행생활 속에서 대중을 시봉하며 대중의 뜻을 받드는 일이 바로 수행이라는 점이다. 그렇기 때문에 청규에 나타난 소임의 역할과 마음가짐은 매우 중요한 수행정신이 되는 것이다.
청규에서 제정된 직제의 형태는 주지를 비롯하여 지사(知事)․두목(頭目)등의 지위(地位)는 모두 대중의 수행완성을 위한 봉사자로서 존재한다. 대중에게 법을 표시(表示)하기에 주지의 직위가 있고, 대중의 모범과 위의(威儀)를 나타냄에 수좌가 있고, 대중의 공양을 담당하는 직위로 典座가 있다. 이처럼 청규에서 각자의 소임과 역할이 구분되어 좌선수행과 일상생활을 구분 없이 모든 것이 대중들의 수행을 원만히 하고 사원경영을 원활히 하기 위해 소임이 정해진 것이다.
이처럼 백장의 청규정신은 시대의 변화에 따라 선원에 적합한 규범을 제정함과 동시에 부처님의 계율정신을 계승하도록 하였다. 보청법의 실시나 다양한 직제를 조직하고 선원의 운영을 원활히 함으로써 수행자의 근본정신의 방향을 제시했다고 볼 수 있다

영어초록

In history of Zen or Seon Buddhism in China, the establishment of the Pure Rules of Pai-Chang laid a great foundation for the independence and development of the Zen sect. The key aspect of the Pure Rules is its contribution to the development of new way of attaining spiritual awakening for Buddhists with time changes. The rules of purity refer to a book of regulations to govern monastic and ordinary daily life for the Zen sect based on spirit of the rule. Back then, the Zen sect was integrated into the Vinaya school and had various problems due to their different monastic customs. Under the circumstances, Pai-Chang promoted financial independence and organized the Zen sect order based on the rule of Bocheong. In particular, Pai-Chang introduced organizational system to run the large-scale sect based on the consensus of Buddhists’ monks and nuns and helped Buddhists’ attaining their spiritual awakening In the Pure Rules of Pai-Chang, only the organization called Simmu under Abbot is mentioned. However, later in the pure rule for Seon or Zen published during the Song Dynasty, Simmu is specifically divided into Sajisa and Yukdusu and includes about 40 offices. As explained above, the establishment of the organizational system and their sub-offices to the Seon sect resulted from time changes and financial independence of temples.
In general, this paper examined three points to look into the changes in the organization. First, there were differences in the meanings and roles of positions between the Pure Rules of Pai-Chang of the Tang Dynasty and Chanmen-guish of the Song Dynasty. For example, the position, Hwaju meant the training master and great leader of the public called as Spiritual Patriarch Seon Master in the Pure Rule of Pai-Chnag. However, later the duty of the position changed to suggest almsgiving. Second, new positions were created as the way of temple operation became diverse and the organization got more specifically divided. For example, the position called Godu was newly introduced as the financial scale of the temples got bigger. Third, as the Full Monastic Training Temple became larger, the organization was further developed. In the era of the Pure Rules of Pai-Chang, Simmu was the only hierarchy but from the Tang Dynasty, the organization was divided more specifically to include about 40 offices.
As noted, the essence of Patriarch Seon is dailiness. In other words, spiritual awakening in Buddhism is to serve the public and respect their ways every day. Therefore, duties, responsibilities and mindset contained in the Pure Rules of Pai-Chang serve as a very important training spirit.
The organization and attached positions such as Abbot, Jisa and Dumok which were established in the rules of purity existed to serve the public for their completion of spiritual awakening. Abbot was there to make the rules visible, Sujwa to demonstrate a role model and rules for Buddhists, and Jeonjwa to take care of public alms. As these examples show, all the missions and roles of each position were determined for people’s peaceful mind training and smooth operation of temples whether be sitting in Zen meditation or daily life.
As described above, the spirit of Pure Rules by Pai-Chang allowed the establishment of rules appropriate for Seon temples and succession to the spirit of the rule with time changes. In this sense, it can be concluded that the rules of purity presented the spiritual basis to Buddhists with the introduction of the organizational system and affiliated offices and smooth operation of Seon temples.
