북한 기록영화 <38선>의 영상기호 분석 (An Analysis of the Semiotics of Images in North Korean Documentary Film )

초록

이 글에서는 북한 기록영화의 통제된 영상기호를 해독하기 위해 기호학적 연구방법으로 영상기호를 해체하여 그 내포된 의미와 이데올로기를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 북한 정권 초기에 제작된 <38선>에 대해 영상기호의 지시적 의미를 나타내는 영상구성요소 분석과 영상기호의 심층적 분석을 위해 표상요소를 분석하였다.
분석 결과, 북한 기록영화의 영상구성요소는 기록영상, 현장화면, 구성화면으로 이루어져 있었다. 또한, 표상요소 분석결과 카메라 기법은 드라마틱한 효과를 구사하기 위해 표현주의 영화의 제작방식을 일부 수용하였으며, 편집기법은 속도감 있는 편집기법으로 내용 전달을 위해서는 다양한 컷들을 사용하였다. 이와 더불어 현장음, 배경음악, 내레이션 등의 사운드 요소들을 적절하게 사용하고 있다. 정권 초기의 부족한 기술역량에도 불구하고 대중 교양에 힘을 쏟기 위해 영화기술 향상에 상당한 노력을 하였음을 알 수 있었다.
이러한 기법들을 활용하여 <38선>에서는 사회주의적 사실주의에 입각하여 제국주의의 악행을 폭로하고 있다. 여기서는 카프와 표현주의가 리얼리즘과 함께 어우러져 재현되고 있다. 다시 말해 다양한 미학사조가 공존하면서 하나의 주제를 재현하기 위해 헤게모니적 공조를 이루고 있다.
이렇게 국가가 억압받는 남조선을 해방시킬 ‘주체’로 인민들을 호명함으로써, 그들이 혁명에 앞장서서 민족의 반역자를 심판하자고 호소하고 있다. 이러한 이데올로기는 개인을 행위의 주체로 만들어 실천을 하도록 작용한다. 그 결과 개인들은 스스로 복종이 아닌 주체적 참여를 한다고 생각하게 된다. <38선>은 “민주기지론”을 뒷받침하는 영상해설집을 연상케 한다. 즉, 북조선의 급속한 민주개혁의 성과를 토대로 단숨에 남조선을 해방해야 한다는 주장을 지속적으로 재현하고 있다.
또한 이항 대립적인 민족주의를 기반으로 신생 국가의 정체성을 찾고 있으며, 지금 살고 있는 이곳이 지상낙원이라는 이데올로기를 생성해내고 있다. 북한은 정권초기부터 인민들이 직관적으로 이해하기 용이한 이항대립항을 설정하고 기록영화의 효과성을 높이기 위해 영화제작에서 대비적 수법을 적용하고 있다.
이상과 같이 영상기호를 해체하여 살펴본 결과, 북한 기록영화의 영상기호는 이항대립적 요소를 배태하며 영상기호의 전이를 추구하고 있다. 이러한 연상 작용을 통해 사회주의 체제의 신성함을 옹호하고 감정을 자극하여 사회적 행동을 촉구하고 있다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes the implicit meaning and the ideology of controlled semiotics of images in North Korean Documentary, decoding them using a semiotic methodology. To this end, this paper utilizes the North Korean Documentary Film “The 38th Parallel” to analyze the factors that indicate referential meanings and the symbolic factors that assist with in-depth analysis of the semiotics of images.
The results indicate that the screen elements of North Korean documentary include image records, site scenes, and screen composition. In addition, the analysis of symbolic factors indicates that North Korean camerawork applies some components from the production method of expressionism to illustrate dramatic effects and their editing techniques utilize various scenes in order to convey the context with appropriate pacing. Moreover, sound effects such as direct sound, background music, and narration are used properly. Despite the lack of technological capability at the initial stage of the administration, the composition of North Korean documentary implies that considerable efforts have been involved in improving film technology in order to enhance public education.
These techniques from “The 38th Parallel,” with its foundations in socialistic realism, reveal the wrongdoings of imperialism. Here, KAPF, expressionism, and realism are reproduced harmoniously. In other words, a hegemonic alliance is formed in order to reproduce a theme in which numerous aesthetic trends exist together.
By calling on people to liberate a suppressed South Korea, the film appeals to people as primary agents to take the initiative in delivering judgment to national traitors. Such ideology influences individuals to treat themselves as subjects of action to fulfill its purpose. As a result, these individuals come to believe that they participate independently rather than submissively. Moreover, the film “The 38th Parallel” is reminiscent of the film manual that supports the “Democratic Basis Theory.” In other words, the film consistently argues that South Korea must be liberated immediately based on North Korea’s democratic reforms.
Furthermore, the film searches for the identity of the newborn nation on the basis of polarized nationalism, and it reinforces the ideology that the viewers’ home is a paradise on earth. From the beginning stages of the regime, North Korea has applied contradistinctive methods in film production to improve the effectiveness of the documentary by establishing a binary polarity that is intuitively understood by people.
As mentioned above, the analysis of the semiotics of images from North Korean Documentary reveals that they germinate the factors of binary polarity and endeavor to proliferate their ideals. Through such a process of association, they glorify the socialist system and insist on socialist acts by stimulating people’s sentiments.
