화엄과 선의 관계론 재고 - 종밀 사상의 표지로서 원각선・여래장선의 제안- (Revisiting the Theoretical Relationship betweenHuayan and Chan (Suggesting “Perfect Enlightenment Chan” and “Tathāgatagarbha Chan” as Markers of Zongmi’s Philosophy))

초록

이 글은 화엄교학의 이념적 지향 및 전개와 관련한 최근 학계의 이해 방식을 비판적으로 검토함과 동시에 종밀에 주목하여 동아시아불교권에서 화엄교학과 선불교의 접점 모색의 대표적 사례를 정리한것이다.
검토의 결과 ‘화엄선’ 주창의 경우처럼 종밀의 이념 지평을 소위 ‘화엄’을 중심으로 이해하려는 시도는 한계를 갖는 것으로 여겨진다.
종밀은 화엄의 세계관을 재해석하여 여래장의 이념으로 수렴하며, 본래성불의 존재로서 중생의 ‘원각심’을 불성으로 해석하고, 나아가심지心地로 파악하여 여래장과 선의 이념적 융합을 모색하고 있기때문이다.
이렇게 볼 때 종밀의 경우, ‘원각사상’은 교와 선이라는 관점에서볼 때 둘의 이념적 융합체로서의 의미를 갖는 개념이며, 따라서 그것은둘의 체계적 융합체로서의 의미를 갖는 ‘원각선’으로 바꾸어 부를 수 있을 것이다. 즉 ‘원각사상’은 교와 선이라는 두 이념의 융합 양태를지칭하며, ‘원각선’은 교와 선이라는 두 체계의 융합 양태를 지칭한다.
달리 표현하면 종밀의 경우, ‘원각’은 개념적으로 교와 선의 통칭이며,‘선’은 혜와 정의, 리와 행의 통칭이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 내용적으로‘원각’은 ‘선’이며 ‘선’은 ‘원각’이다. 두 개념의 융합체를 상정한다면그것은 ‘원각선’이 될 것이다. 다만 종밀의 사상을 대변하는 것으로서 ‘원각’에 주목할 경우에는‘원각선’이 유효할 것이지만, 종밀이 원각도 화엄도 여래장의 이념으로수렴해 파악한다는 점에 주목할 경우에는 ‘여래장선’이 보다 적절할것으로 여겨진다.

영어초록

This study presents a critical examination on a recent trend within the academic community to interpret the philosophical pursuit and development of Huayan scriptural studies. At the same time, it focuses on Guifeng Zongmi and summarizes major cases that explored the interface between Huayan scriptural studies and Chan Buddhism in the East Asian Buddhist community.
My examination finds that the attempt to understand Zongmi’s ideological horizon as centering on Huayan, as in the case of “Huayan Chan (華嚴禪),” seems to have limitations. This is because Zongmi approached the concept of “Tathāgatagarbha” based on his reinterpretation of the Huayan worldview. He also interpreted the term “mind of perfect enlightenment (圓覺⼼)” of a sentient being―who is inherently endowed with enlightenment ― as “buddha nature” and/or “mind field (⼼地)” as he looked for ways to ideologically integrate the concepts of Tathāgatagarbha and Chan. If so, seen from the perspectives of the doctrinal and meditative approaches, Zongmi’s “concept of perfect enlightenment” is significant as an ideological integration of these doctrinal and meditative approaches. Therefore, Zongmi’s concept can be relabeled “perfect enlightenment Chan (圓覺禪),” which is significant as a systematic fusion of these two approaches. In other words, “concept of perfect enlightenment” refers to the integrated state of two ideologies called “doctrine” and “meditation.” And “perfect enlightenment Chan” refers to the integrated state of two systems also called “doctrine” and “meditation.” Put another way, Zongmi’s “perfect enlightenment” is a common designation of doctrine and meditation in terms of ideology, while “meditation/Chan” is a common designation of wisdom and concentration as well as that of principle and action.
Therefore, in terms of content, “perfect enlightenment” is “Chan,” and “Chan” is “perfect enlightenment.” An integrated form of these two concepts can be called “perfect enlightenment Chan.” Further, if one focuses on the term “perfect enlightenment” as a representation of Zongmi’s philosophy, “perfect enlightenment Chan” seems to be proper. However, considering that Zongmi understands the concept of Tathāgata-garbha as an integration of both perfect enlightenment and Huayan, the concept of “Tathāgata-garbha Chan (如來藏禪)” seems to be more proper as a representation of his philosophy.
