經典과 禪의 融合解釋學으로서의 『禪源諸詮集都序』 (“Preface to the Collected Writings on the Source of Seon”, as an Integrative Hermeneutics of Buddhist Scriptures and Seon)

초록

唐 圭峰宗密 『禪源諸詮集都序』는 동아시아 선불교 역사에서 중요한 문헌이다. 그간 『都序』의 저술 의도는 일반적으로 교선일치, 교선회통, 종파간 회통, 돈오점수, 화엄종과 하택선의 선양 등을 위한 저술로 알려져 왔다. 그러나 엄밀하게 분석하면 『都序』의 의도나 전체적 글 구성은 선 문헌[禪詮]의 해석원리와 방법의 문제를 다루고 있다.
『都序』는 선수행자들에게 돈오의 수단으로 기능하는 선전(禪詮)의 중요성을 일깨우고, 선전을 두루 열람케 함으로써 선에 대한 바른 이해[圓見]를 증득하고, 후학을 지도하는 선교방편으로도 유용하게 활용할 것을 권하고 있다. 이를 위해 『都序』는 선 문헌의 모순성을 통합적으로 이해하는 해석학적 문제를 논의해야만 했다. 『都序』는 경전과 융합해 선의 모순성을 해석하는 열 가지 해석원칙과, 선 문헌을 권실(權實),요의불요의(了義不了義)로 구분해 해석하는 방법론과 타당성을 논증하고 있다.
『都序』에서 제시하는 선전에 대한 해석원칙은, 경론의 해석원칙인 사의법(四依法) 중, 사람보다는 법, 문자보다는 의미, 불요의 보다는 요의에 의지하는 원칙을 그대로 적용하면서도, 현량(現量[智慧])과 성언량(聖言量[法])을 동등하게 상호 순환적으로 제안한다는 점에서 『都序』의 독특한 원칙과 종밀의 경전중심 불교관을 잘 보여준다. 『都序』의 해석학적 방법은, 禪3종의 분류, 敎3종과의 대조(對照)·일치(一致), 선3종을 점차적 수행체계로 정립하는 논리로 전개된다. 본고는 『都序』의 내용과 체계를 해석학적 측면에서 접근함으로써 선 문헌에 대한 교학적 이해의 지평을 넓히고, 경전과 깨달음 간의 상호 역동적인 담론의 확장에 기여할 것이다.

영어초록

The “Preface to the Collected Writings on the Source of Seon” written by Guifeng Zongmi of Tang Dynasty is an important document in the history of Zen Buddhism in East Asia. So far, it has been generally known that the book was written for matching up Seon with Kyo(teaching), integrative understanding of Kyo, Seon taught at various sects, sudden enlightenment and gradual practicing, and enhancing Hwa-eom teaching and Ha-taek Seon.
However, it has been found that the intention and overall composition of “the preface” deals with hermeneutics approach, i.e., the interpretation principles and methodology of Seon literature.
“The preface” awakens the importance of Seon literature functioning as a means of sudden enlightenment to Seon disciplinants, and it recommends whole study of Seon documents to gain a right understanding on Seon and utilizing them to teach following disciplinants according to the capability of them. For this purpose, “the preface” had to discuss the hermeneutics issues on how to get integrative understanding of Seon literature with mutual contradictions. “The Preface” demonstrates ten principles for interpreting Seon literature with contradictions based on Buddhist scriptures, the interpretation methodology and validity of dividing those Seon documents into provisional principle and real principle, explicit meaning(nitārtha) and non- explicit meaning (neyārtha).
“The Preface” shows its originality and Zongmi's sutra-based understanding principle by presenting wisdom (Hyeon-Ryang) and dharma (Seong-Eon-Ryang) as equal and mutually cyclic, while applying the other 3 out of 4 principles of sutra interpretation as before, i.e., depending on dharma rather than person, meaning rather than text, explicit meaning rather than non-explicit meaning. The hermeneutical method of “the preface” are demonstrated by the classification of the Seon literature into 3 Seon teachings, comparing and contrasting them with 3 Kyo teachings, and the establishment of 3 Seon teachings literature as gradual discipline systems. This paper might expand the horizon of the doctrinal understanding of Seon literature and contribute to the expansion of the interactive discourse between the scriptures and enlightenment by approaching the contents and system of “the preface” from the hermeneutical aspect.
