『비행선(飛行船)』의 중역(重譯) 및 텍스트 변형 양상 연구 (A Study on "Bi-Haeng-Sun(The Airship)" as a Retranslation and aspects of the Text’s Transformation.)

초록

이 논문에서는 김교제의 『비행선』을 대상으로 하여 20세기 초 미국에서 집필된 대중소설 한 편이 중국을 거쳐 한국으로 수용되는 과정에서 나타난 다양한 변화의 양상과 그 의미를 보다 구체적으로 고찰해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 원작 및 대본을 확보하여 원문의 직접 비교를 통해 수용 및 변형의 양상을 실증적 관점에서 분석하였다.
먼저 원작인 『탐정 닉 카터 이야기』는 대중소설류에 해당하는 다임 노블(dime novel)의 양식적 규정력으로부터 크게 벗어나 있지 않은 작품이라고 할 수 있으며, 대체로 추리소설적 요소와 연애 서사적 요소가 결합된 소설이라고 할 수 있다. 중역본(中譯本)인 『신비정』의 경우는 별다른 텍스트 변형의 양상이 발견되지 않았지만, 『비행선』은 주로 축약과 삭제 등의 방식을 통해 대본인 『신비정』과 비교적 큰 차이를 노정하게 되었고 결과적으로 원작과도 상당히 다른 면모를 지니게 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 대본의 오류를 바로잡거나 혹은 작품 내적 통일성이 확보될 수 있도록 일정한 수정 및 보완이 이루어지고 있는 양상 또한 확인할 수 있다.
『비행선』의 가장 큰 특징으로는 원작 및 대본에서 형성․유지되고 있었던 추리소설 및 연애 서사로서의 양식적 속성이 탈각되는 양상을 보이고 있다는 점을 들 수 있다. 이러한 분석은 남녀 주인공의 형상화 방식 및 주요 인물의 작품 내적 역할이 두드러지게 변화하고 있다는 사실로부터 뒷받침될 수 있다. 추리 능력과 민첩성을 지닌 전형적 탐정으로 묘사되었던 닉 카터(니개특)는 우월성과 비범함의 강조를 통해 전래 서사 양식인 영웅군담소설의 주인공에 가까운 인물 형상으로 변모되고 있으며, 연애 서사의 남녀 주인공으로서의 전형성을 지니고 있던 스타벅(태배극)과 이다야(이특나)의 형상은 두 인물 간의 애정 관계 형성 과정을 담은 언술들에 대한 대폭적인 삭제를 통해 그러한 성격이 크게 약화되는 양상을 보이고 있다.
이와 같은 『비행선』의 변화 양상은, 『신비정』이라는 매개를 통해 근대 서구의 대중소설을 수용하게 됐지만 결국 당대 자국의 독자에 대한 고려 및 문학적 관습의 맥락에서 서사 문법을 변형시킬 수밖에 없었던 번역 주체의 상황을 드러내 보이고 있다. 이러한 변형은 단지 무지에서 비롯된 오류 또는 자의적인 축약 및 삭제라고 규정될 수만은 없으며, 당대의 독자 대중에게 익숙한 방식과 형태로 원천 텍스트(source text)의 내용을 전달․제시하려는 목표 텍스트(target text) 생성 주체의 적극적인 의도와 노력의 산물에 가깝다고 판단하였다.

영어초록

In this paper, we want to investigate the patterns and their meanings of the various changes appeared in Kim Kyo Je’s novel, Bi-Haeng-Sun(The Airship) as a retranslation. It was shifted after the Chinese popular novels written in the early 20th century, the United States by targeting more specific. To do this, ensure the original story analyzed the patterns of acceptance and transformation through direct comparison of texts from the empirical point of view.
First, the original "Nick Carter detective story" can be described as stylistic work not much higher than from a dime novel that corresponds to the current popular fiction, mystery novels combined the general elements and narrative elements dating can be said. Shin-Bi-Jung(The Newly Airship), as Chinese translation did not find this aspect of the much-text transformation, Bi-Haeng-Sun(The Airship) as a retranslation was primarily exposed to the script of the former with relatively large differences through methods such as contraction and deletion as a result, the original and was also have had a very different aspect. Nevertheless, correct, and enhance certain aspects that have been made to make this work, or any errors immediately grasp the inner unity of the scenario can also be obtained to verify.
The biggest features of Bi-Haeng-Sun(The Airship) is that there seems to be the pattern that is formed in the original script, and the stylistic properties were being kept as a mystery and romance epic shelled. This analysis can be supported by the fact that this work has changed significantly shaped the way the internal role of the heroine and leading figures of men and women. These modifications are not only be defined as merely arbitrary contraction resulting from error or ignorance and deleting, contemporary readers familiar manner and to the public in the form of the source text target text that you want to transfer, presenting the contents of the target text was considered closer to the product of the positive intent and effort of creating principals.
