초록

이 연구는 『先札』에 수록된 자료 중 痘瘡의 발병과 치료 경위가 나타난 편지를 선별하고 검토함으로써, 당대 두창의 전염 양상과 이에 대한 대처 방식을 살피는 것을 목적으로 한다. 『先札』은 霽月堂 宋奎濂(1630~1709)의 後孫家에 전하는 아홉 책의 書札帖으로 500여 통의 편지가 실려 있다. 병의 차도를 묻는 안부 편지가 『先札』 전체에 혼재해 있는데, 제4책에는 유독 疫疾에 대한 편지가 많이 수록되어 있다. 제4책에 수록된 61통의 편지 중 28통의 편지가 宋奎濂의 손자며느리의 疫疾에 대한 내용으로, 疫疾 발병부터 치료까지의 전 과정이 담겨 있어 주목을 요한다.
1700년 3월부터 4월 중순까지 병에 관한 편지를 발췌하여 痘瘡의 발병과 증세 및 치료 경위들을 살피고, 病人 손자며느리 이씨를 위한 송규렴 집안 사람들의 간병과 배려, 그리고 病症을 비롯하여 치료에 쓰인 약재들에 대한 정보를 밝혔다. 송규렴이 손자며느리의 병세를 염려하여 쏟은 관심은 거의 매일 보낸 편지에 잘 드러난다. 증상이 심해지거나 차도를 보일 때마다 시차를 두고 하루에도 두 통씩 편지를 보냈는데, 이러한 사실은 손자며느리의 완쾌를 바라는 송규렴의 간절함과 절박함을 대변해 준다.
송규렴의 편지에서 처음 며칠간은 주변의 노비들이 染疾로 出幕하는 상황이 묘사된다. 그때까지 송규렴의 손자며느리 이씨가 낙태를 하고 먼 길을 온 탓에 힘없이 몸져누운 것이라고 판단하였다. 胎症으로 의심하였다가 이후 通經을 하자 染疾이라 간주하고 치솟는 열을 내리고 원기를 보하는 방식으로 치료를 하였다. 宋奎濂은 손자며느리가 걸린 전염병을 고치기 위해 손수 처방을 하였고, 온 집안사람들도 환자를 배려하여 그대로 집에 머물게 하고 자신들은 다른 집이나 寓所로 피해 옮기고는 온갖 약재를 써서 치료할 수 있도록 주의를 기울였다.
『先札』을 통해 송규렴과 집안 식구들이 손자며느리의 痘瘡을 극복하기 위해 합심한 모습을 살피고, 시할아버지의 정성과 의원의 처방이 더해져 투병에서 벗어나 일상으로 회복된 일련의 과정을 조망하였다. 『先札』에서 몸살감기로 오인한 때부터 확진으로 진단하기까지의 과정, 각 증상들에 대한 대처와 거리두기 및 自家隔離 방식, 병자의 완쾌를 위한 온 집안 식구들의 노력 등을 확인하면서, 요즈음 팬데믹으로 인하여 우리에게 일상이 된 대인기피와 혐오, 사회적으로 번져가는 두려움과 위기감을 언젠가는 극복할 수 있다는 기대와 단서를 발견하였다는 데에 연구의 의의를 두고자 한다.

영어초록

Among a variety of letters organized in 『Seonchal』, this study is to select ones that describe outbreak and treating process of smallpox and thoroughly review them, which ultimately aims to examine contagious aspects of smallpox those days and consequent responses. 『Seonchal』 is a letter collection with 9 volumes handed down to descendants of Jewoldang Song Gyuryeom (1630~1709). The descendants collected letters that Song Gyuryeom family members, relatives and acquaintances corresponded with each other in order to pass down their ancestral calligraphic traces and then bound them in 9 volumes, which incorporates more than 500 letters in total. There are a number of letters asking if the disease went into remission in the entire 『Seonchal』 and Volume 4 especially includes many pieces about smallpox. From 61 letters in Volume 4, total of 28 are as to smallpox of Song Gyuryeom’s granddaughter-in-law, which should be noted that it covers the whole process from smallpox outbreak to treatment.
Letters written from March to mid-April in 1700 are excerpted to examine outbreak, symptoms and treating process of smallpox. The patient in this works is granddaughter-in-law Ms. Lee and this study is to clarify Song Gyuryeom family members’ care and devotion for looking after her and information on the illness and traditional medicines used for treatment. Letters that were sent almost every day clearly demonstrate cares and concerns about the condition of Song Gyuryeom’s granddaughter-in-law Ms. Lee. Two letters were sometimes sent in a day when symptoms got worse or showed improvement, which suggests Song Gyuryeom desperately hoped for complete recover of his granddaughter-in-law.
Song Gyuryeom’s letters written for the first few days describe some servants put up a tent to isolate a contagious patient. Song Gyuryeom thought that his granddaughter-in-law was laid up with illness for a long journey after abortion. It was followed by his doubt about gestational disease but when she had her period, he thought Ms. Lee had an epidemic and treated her focusing on bringing down soaring fever and restoring her vitality. Song Gyuryeom wrote out a prescription himself for his granddaughter-in-law to treat the epidemic. He cared for other family members to be evacuated to other houses or temporary residences while the patient stayed for treatment using all sorts of medicines available.
『Seonchal』 shows that Song Gyuryeom and his family members moved to other residences in order to overcome hardships from smallpox of granddaughter-in-law, which represents their cooperation. In addition, this study also looks into Song Gyuryeom’s devotion and clinical prescription, which led to conditions getting back to normal after family’s fight against the disease. 『Seonchal』 describes the process from the moment when the disease was misreconized as cold and fatigue until it was diagnosed as a confirmed case, responses to each symptom along with distancing and self-quarantine methods and the entire family’s efforts hoping for full recovery of the patient. Based on this work, the study has academic significance that it has found some expectancy and clues that we could overcome the currently prevalent social phobia and hatred, fear and crisis all over the society resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic some day.
