선(禪)은 변증법인가?－일심삼문(一心三門)의 가능성과 자유의지－ (Is Zen (禪) a Dialectic?: ‘One Mind and Three Gates (一心三門)’ and ‘the Free-Will’)

초록

성철 스님의 1981년 종정 취임 당시 법어인 “산은 산이요, 물은 물이로다.”라는 화두(話頭)는 깨달음에 대한 논리적이고 교리적인 설명을 초월하여 깨달음을 직접 지시하는 선(禪)의 정신을 잘 나타내 주는 말이다. 그런데이렇게 원래 사량(思量)과 분별(分別)을 허락하지 않는 선(禪)의 화두를 이론적인 설명을 통해서 이해하려는 시도가 계속되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 선(禪)의 화두에 대해 이론적으로 설명을 시도한 기존의 대표적인 사례로서 고형곤의 선의 세계를 고찰하고, 그의 시도의 적합성을 변증법의부정성의 원리에 내포한 근원적인 이원성(二元性)의 한계라는 점에서 비판적으로 검토하였다. 또한 이러한 화두를 철학적으로 해석하기 위한 또 다른방법으로 셸링의 긍정철학이 가진 유용성과 한계를 고찰하였다.
나아가 선(禪)의 입장에서는 교(敎)의 방법을 통한 깨달음에의 길에 근원적인 이원성(二元性)이라는 한계가 있음을 일심이문(一心二門)에 대한 논의를 통해 고찰하였다. 하지만 일심이문 또한 근원적인 이항(二項)성에 의거한 사변적인 논리라는 점에서 궁극적인 분별과 부정성에서 벗어나지 못한점을 언급하였다. 나아가 천태종의 일심삼관(一心三觀)에 내포된 삼항(三 項)성을 검토하면서, 선(禪)적 깨달음에 대해 삼항성에 의거한 설명의 타당성을 비판적으로 고찰함과 동시에 삼항성에 내재한 자유의지 관념의 의미에 대해 고찰하였다. 이러한 시도는 헤겔의 변증법적 해석과 셸링의 긍정철학적 해석, 하이데거의 존재론적 해석의 차이점을 밝히며 진행되었다. 나아가 이러한 해석의 차이의 근원으로서 대승기신론(大乘起信論)의 일심(一 心)과 이문(二門)의 관계에 대해 고찰하며 언어와 언어 이전, 사고와 사고이전의 깨달음과의 관계를 살펴보았다. 또한 일심(一心)과 이문(二門)의 관계에서 과연 서양 근대 독일관념론 철학적 의미에서의 자유의지 개념 또한포괄하여 설명되고 있는지를 검토해 보았다. 이를 통해 여기에 내포한 근원적인 이원성(二元性)의 한계를 넘어서기 위한 일심삼문(一心三門)의 가능성을 모색해 보았다. 이를 위해 천태종의 일심삼관(一心三觀)에서 보이는 삼분법(三分法)에 내재하는 근원적인 이항(二項)적인 논리를 지적하였다.
본 연구의 입장에서 선(禪)이 탄생한 이유는 중론(中論) 등에서 대표되는 불교 논리의 근본적인 틀인 이항(二項)적 성격의 한계에서 기인한 바가크다. 이 또한 실질적/내재적 삼항(三項)이 아닌, 근원적으로 내재된 이항성(二項性)의 전개인 형식적 삼분법을 피할 수 없기 때문이다. 이러한 이유로일심(一心)이 삼문(三門)일 수 있는 가능성을 통해 삼항(三項)적 논리에 의한 인식론과 존재론의 가능성을 모색해 볼 과제가 생긴다.

영어초록

Monk Seongcheol (性徹) said, “Mountain is mountain, water is water.” This well represents the spirit of Zen (禪) that directly instructs enlightenment beyond logical and doctrinal explanations. However, attempts have been made to understand these topics (話頭) of Zen (禪) through theoretical explanations.
In this study, Ko Hyung-gon (高亨坤)’s ‘World of Zen (禪)’ was considered as an existing representative example that attempted to theoretically explain the topic of Zen (禪). In addition, the suitability of his attempt was critically reviewed, due to its limitation of the fundamental dualism implied in the principle of negativity of dialectics. In addition, the usefulness and limitations of Schelling’s positive philosophy were considered as another way to interpret these topics philosophically.
Furthermore, it was revealed that there is a fundamental limitation of dualism in the path to enlightenment through the method of teaching. This study considered this point through the discussion of ‘One Mind and Two Gates (一 心三門)’. However, ‘One Mind and Two Gates (一心二門)’ also failed to escape the ultimate discrimination and negativity, in that it was a speculative logic based on the fundamental binary nature. Additionally, the validity of the explanation based on triangulation was critically examined for Zen enlightenment while reviewing the triangulation implied in Cheon Tae-jong (天 台宗)’s ‘One Mind and Three Views (一心三觀)’. At the same time, the meaning of the concept of free will inherent in the three stars was examined.
These attempts were made by revealing the differences between Hegel’s dialectical interpretation, Schelling’s positive philosophical interpretation, and Heidegger’s ontological interpretation. Furthermore, as the source of this difference in interpretation, the relationship between ‘One Mind (一心)’ and ‘Two Gates (二門)’ of ‘Discourse on the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana (大 乘起信論)’ was examined. Through this, the relationship between language and language transfer, thinking and realization before thinking was examined. In addition, the question of whether the concept of free will exists in the philosophical sense of modern German idealism in the West in the relationship between ‘One Mind (一心)’ and ‘Two Gates (二門)’ was examined. Through this, the possibility of ‘One Mind and Three Gates (一心三門)’ was explored to overcome the limitations of the fundamental dualism implied here. To this end, he pointed out the fundamental binomial logic inherent in ‘One Mind and Three Views (一心三觀)’ seen in Cheontaejong (天台宗)’s ‘One Mind and Three Gates (一心三門)’.
From the standpoint of this study, the reason for the birth of Zen (禪) is largely the limitations of the binomial nature, which is the fundamental framework of Buddhist logic represented by ‘Mūlamadhyamakakārikā (中論).’ This is also because the formal triad, which is the development of the inherent binary star, cannot be avoided, not the actual/internal triad. For this reason, there is a task to explore the possibility of epistemology and ontology based on trinomial logic through the possibility that the ‘One Mind (一心)’ can be a ‘Three-Gate (三門)’.
Through this, the task of simplification arises in the area of how to reach realization beyond thought, beyond the fundamental binary star. Like the binomial dialectic of identity and negativity, the task is not the binomial ontology of identity and difference, but the Korean trinomial ontology and epistemology that appear in the theory of ‘Three natures (三才)’ – that is, ‘Heaven and Earth and Human (天地人)’. This can be called the third something, beyond reason and non-reason.
