심층 서사의 계급적 욕망과 웃음-<소설인규옥소선(掃雪因窺玉簫仙)>- (Class Desires and Laughter in a Deep Narrative––)

초록

<소설인규옥소선(掃雪因窺玉簫仙)>에는 과거급제를 통한 상층 계급의 아버지 되기와 하층 계급의 신분 상승이라는 심층의 계급적 욕망이 잠재해있다. 두 계급은 자신의 욕망을 실현시키는 과정에서 그 양상을 달리하는데, 상층 계급의 ‘생(生)’은 아버지의 울타리 밖을 벗어나자마자 무계획과 충동성을 드러내며 삶의 모든 것을 하층 계급에게 의존하는 무능함의 절정을 보이는 반면, 하층계급인 ‘자란(紫鸞)’은 영리하고 치밀한 여성으로 무능한 생의 앞길을 주도적으로 상황 점검, 관리해나가며 자신의 욕망을 이루는 기민함을 보인다.
본고는 이러한 인식 하에 해당 텍스트의 표층 서사는 신분의 차이를 극복한 사랑의 이야기를 그리고 있지만 심층 서사는 상층 계급의 사대부 자제가 자신의 자립적 지위를 확보하기 위해 몸부림치는 이야기이면서 동시에 하층계급이 그러한 상층 계급의 욕망의 틈을 비집고 들어가 자신의 지위를 상승시키는 이야기를 담고 있다고 보았다.
주목되는 것은 표층과 심층이 얽혀진 서사 과정에서 종종 얼굴을 내미는 것이 ‘웃음’이라는 사실이다. 웃음은 남자 주인공인 ‘생’의 인물 형상, 상층 계급과 하층 계급의 대조적 양상, 사대부의 자기 반영적 시선에서 도출된다. 이러한 측면에서 웃음은 해당 텍스트를 구성하는 미적 특질의 하나로 설명될 수 있으며 특정 계급에 대한 비판과 성찰을 담아내어 계급의 폐쇄성과 경직성을 뚫고자 하는 사회의 염원을 담아내는데 주요한 구실을 했다고 여겨진다. 이것이 『천예록』에 수록된 <소설인규옥소선>이 다른 이본의 옥소선 이야기와 차별화되는 결정적 지점이라 생각된다. 해당 텍스트를 애정전기소설(愛情傳奇小說)의 영향권 안에서만 볼 수 없는 이유도 여기에 있다.

영어초록

In the <SoseolingyuOksoseon(掃雪因窺玉簫仙)>, the desire for the deep class is connoted. One is pursuing to become the father of the upper class by passing an examination, and another is intended to raise one’s own status from the lower class to the upper class. The two classes are distinguished in their aspects in the process of realizing their desires. The ‘Saeng(生)’ of the upper class, revealing his haphazardness and impulsiveness as soon as he gets out of his father’s protection, shows his extreme inability that be dependent on the lower class for everything in his life. On the other hand, ‘Jaran(紫鸞=玉簫仙)’, a clever secular woman, showing agility in fulfilling her desires by taking the lead in monitoring and managing both ‘Saeng(生)’s incompetence’ and life. They succeed in settling the existing order building complementary relationships in the contrasting aspects.
In this article, under this recognition, the surface narrative of the text depicts a love story that overcomes the difference in social status, but the deep narrative is a story of a nobleman from the upper class struggling to secure his own independent status. Concurrently, it represents a story including a survival strategy for the lower class to elevate their status by squeezing through the gaps of the desire of one who belongs to the upper class.
The most significant concept is ‘laughter’, which emerges in the process of unfolding the narrative by interwining both the surface narrative and the deep one. The laughter implied in the text is derived from the appearance of the male protagonist ‘Saeng’, the contrast between the upper and lower classes, and the self-reflective gaze of the nobleman. In this perspctive, not only can laughter be defined as one of the major aesthetic characteristics constituting the text, but it also is seen to have played a critical role in expressing society’s desire to overcome the closedness and rigidity of class by containing criticism and reflection.
This is the critical point that <SoseolingyuOksoseon> included in 『Cheonyerok (天倪錄)』 is differentiated from the story of <Oksoseon> in other versions. This is also the reason why the text cannot be discussed confined only as a Romantic Jeon-gi Novel(愛情傳奇小說).
