영호(石顚) 정호(漢永)와 중앙불교전문학교- 한국의 ‘윌리엄스 칼리지’ 혹은 ‘엠허스트 칼리지’ - (Yeongho Jung Ho and Central Buddhist College - ‘Williams College’ or ‘Amherst College’ of Korea -)

초록

이 논문은 동국대학교(1906~2014)의 역사 전반기에 이 학교의 정신적 사상적 문화적 좌표를 제시하였던 映湖 鼎鎬(石顚漢永, 1870~1948)의 살림살이와사고방식에 대해 살펴본 글이다. 동국대학교의 전신이었던 중앙불교전문학교(1930~1940)는 한국 인문학의 본산이었다. 1930년대 당시부터 불교계의 중앙불전은 기독교계의 연희전문과 천도교계의 보성전문과 함께 한국의 3대 사학으로 널리 알려졌다. 중앙불전의 전통을 이은 혜화전문학교는 동국대학-동국대학교로 이어졌다. 당시 중앙불전의 제4대 학장이었던 映湖 鼎鎬가 불교학과동양문학에 관한 전문교육을 실시하였던 학풍은 오늘날 대학평가에서 세계 최고의 대학들로 평가받는 하버드-예일-프린스턴 대학을 제치거나 필적하는 미국의 북동부 메사추세츠주에 자리한 작은 대학인 윌리엄스 칼리지(WilliamsCollege, 1793~ )와 엠허스트 칼리지(Amherst College, 1812~ )에 상응하고있다.
당시 불교학 및 동양문학에 관한 전문교육을 실시하기 위해 세운 중앙불전의 교육목적은 지금도 우리나라 불교교육사의 한 상징을 넘어 한국 인문대학의 지향에 일정한 유효성을 지니고 있다. 더욱이 우리 학문의 시대정신인 융합하고 복합하는 지평은 불도유 삼교와 선교율 삼학 및 문사철 삼학에막힘없던 영호의 가풍에 긴밀하게 부합하고 있다. 그가 펼친 인문적 지성은명진학교의 강사 이래 불교사범학교-불교고등강숙의 塾長 및 중앙학림의학장과 중앙불교전문학교의 교장 그리고 혜화전문학교의 명예교수에 이르기까지 동국대학교 반세기 역사의 디딤돌이자 금자탑이 되었다. 그리고 영호의 인문적 지성은 이후 동대 학풍의 기반이 되었다.
영호는 불교계 유일의 대학이었던 중앙학림이 휴교되자 이 과도기에 총무원에서 유지한 불교학원에 상응하는 개운사와 대원암에 불교전문강원를 개원하고 사미-사집-사교-대교-수의과를 통해 선승과 학승들을 길러내었다.
또 그는 대원암의 집담회를 통해 불교의 현실참여에 대해 깊이 토론하였다.
뿐만 아니라 영호는 많은 논저를 통하여 번역과 저술의 중요성을 강조했으며 동시에 잡지를 인수하여 편집하고 간행하면서 수많은 불교 개혁의 논설을 썼다. 나아가 그는 일급 시인이자 인문적 지성으로서 다수의 시와 산문을남겼다. 이러한 영호의 전방위적 역량에 깊게 영향을 받은 중앙학림과 중앙불전 및 혜화전문과 동국대학교 학생들은 불교학과 문사철학으로 계승해 갔다. 불교교학은 권상로, 김법린, 백성욱, 이석호(상순), 정두석, 김동화 황성기, 장원규, 김잉석, 홍정식, 이종익, 이기영, 원의범, 정태혁, 고익진, 김인덕, 목정배, 오형근 등이 이어 나갔다. 불교사학은 조명기, 우정상, 김영태,이재창 등이 계승해 갔다.
어문학연구로는 정지용, 김기림, 송요인, 이창배, 백철, 양주동, 조연현,이병주, 이동림, 김성배, 김기동, 이상보, 장한기, 최세화, 임기중, 홍기삼등이 이어 나갔다. 시인 작가로는 한용운, 조종현, 신석정, 김달진, 서정주,조지훈, 이형기, 신경림, 이범선, 이근삼, 황석영, 조정래 등으로 계승해 갔다. 사학으로는 황의돈, 남도영, 이재호, 이영무, 안계현, 이용범, 송준호,조좌호, 천혜봉 등이 이어 나갔다. 철학으로는 정종, 김용정, 박성배 등이동서양 사상 전반으로 계승해 갔다. 이처럼 이러한 인문적 지성과 고전적 지식인이 양산될 수 있었던 것은 영호가 터전을 닦고 씨앗을 뿌리며 이끌었던불교고등강숙-중앙학림-불교학원(총무원)-불교전수학교-중앙불전-혜화전문의 학풍에서 비롯될 수 있었다. 그 결과 불교학 전통은 불교대학의 ‘인문지성 가풍’으로 이어졌고, 문학지성의 전통은 문과대학과 예술대학의 ‘文星’즉 ‘문예의 성좌’로 이어져 한국의 인문학 발전에 크게 기여하고 있다.

The purpose of this study was to research the housekeeping conditionand way of thinking of Yeongho Jung Ho who proposed the mental,philosophical and cultural coordinates of Dongguk University(1906~2014)in its entire history. Central Buddhist College(1930~1940) that was theprevious organization of Dongguk University was the head of Koreanliberal arts. Since 1930s, the Central Buddhist College has been known asthe top 3 private schools along with Yeonhui College of Christianity andBosung College of Cheondogyo. Hyehwa College that connected theCentral Buddhist College was linked to Dongguk College – DonggukUniversity. The academic tradition (the specialized education aboutBuddhist Studies and East Literature) that was performed by Yeongho JungHo, who was the 4th dean of Central Buddhist College, was equal to thatof Williams College(1793~ ) and Amherst College(1812~ ) that are smallcolleges located in Massachusetts State of USA and whose academictradition is better than or equal to Havard, Yale or Priceton University,which have been evaluated as the world best universities in recentuniversity evaluation.
The educational purpose of Central Buddhist College that wasconfirmed as the specialized education about Buddhist Studies and EastLiterature has been still effective for the orientation of Korean liberal artscolleges beyond the symbol of Korean Buddhist Education History. Theprospect for fusion and complex, which is the sprit of the time of study,closely conformed to the academic tradition of Yeongho who was familiar with The three teachings of Buddhism, Taoism and Confusianism, Thethree learnings of Seon, Pravacana & Vinaya, The three studies ofLiterature, History and Philosophy. His liberal arts intelligence has beenthe steppingstone and monumental work of Dongguk University for abouthalf a century from the lecturer of Myungjin School to the Head ofCollege of Buddhist Education-Buddhist High School, Dean of JungangSchool, Dean of Central Buddhist College and Honorary Professor ofHyehwa College. Yeongho’s liberal arts intelligence became thefoundation of academic tradition of Dongguk University.
When Jungang School that was the only Buddhist university wasclosed, he opened the Buddhist Lecture Hall in Daewonam & Gaeunsathat conformed to the Buddhist academy maintained in Chongmuwon inthe transit period and nurtured Zen priests and learned priests throughSami-Sazip-Sagyo-Daegyo-Suui Department. He discussed theparticipation of Buddhism in the reality deeply through the discussionmeeting in Daewonam. Yeongho emphasized the importance oftranslation and writing through many books. At the same time, he wrotemany leading articles for Buddhism reformation by editing and publishingmagazine. Furthermore, as the famous poet and liberal art intelligent, heleft many poems and proses. The students of Jungang School, CentralBuddhist College, Hyehwa College and Dongguk University who weredeeply affected by the versatile abilities of Yeongho succeeded his BuddhistStudies and Literature Philosophy. Buddhist Education Studies wassucceeded by Gwon Sang-Ro, Kim Beop-Rin, Baek Seong-Uk, LeeSeok-Ho(Sangsun), Jung Du-Seok, Kim Dong-Hwa, Hwang Seong-Gi,Jang Won-Gyu, Kim Ing-Seok, Hong Jung-Sik, Lee Jong-Ik, LeeGi-Young, Won Ui-Beom, Jung Tae-Hyuk, Ko Ik-Jin, Kim In-Duk,Mok Jung-Bae, Oh Hyung-Geun. Buddhist Historical Studies weresucceeded by Jo Myung-Gi, Uh Jung-Sang, Kim Young-Tae, LeeJae-Chang etc.
Language and Literature Studies were succeeded by Jung Ji-Yong, Kim Gi-Rim, Song Yo-In, Lee Chang-Bae, Baek Chul, Yang Ju-Dong,Jo Yun-Hyun, Lee Byeong-Ju, Lee Dong-Rim, Kim Seug-Bae, KimGi-Dong, Lee Sang-Bo, Jang Han-Gi, Choi Se-Hwa, Lim Gi-Jung andHong Gi-Sam, etc. As poet and writer, there were Han Yong-Un, JoJong-Hyun, Shin Suk-Jung, Kim Dal-Jin, Seo Jung-Ju, Jo Ji-Hun, LeeHyung-Gi, Shin Gyung-Rim, Lee Beom-Seon, Lee Geun-Sam, HwangSeok-Young, Jo Jung-Rae, etc. Historical Studies was succeeded byHwang Ui-Don, Nam Do-Young, Lee Jae-Ho, Lee Young-Mu, AhnGye-Hyun, Lee Yong-Bum, Song Jun-Ho, Jo Jwa-Ho, Chun Hye-Bongetc. Philosophy was succeeded by Jung Jong, Kim Yong-Jung, ParkSung-Bae in the general eastern and western philosophy. The reason thatthe intelligence of liberal arts and traditional intelligent have beenproduced was the academic tradition of Buddhist High School-JungangSchool-Buddhist Academy(Chongmuwon)-Buddhist Learning School-Central Buddhist College-Hyehwa College that were founded, nurturedand led by Yeongho. As a result, the tradition of Buddhist Studies wasled to the ‘academic tradition of liberal art intelligence’ and the traditionof literature intelligence was led to the ‘constellation of literature’ in thecollege of liberal arts and the college of arts, contributing to thedevelopment of Korean liberal arts.
