한반도 신석기시대 흑요석제 석기의 출토양상과 의미 (The Pattern and Meaning of Neolithic Obsidian Tools from Korean Peninsular in the Neolithic Age)

초록

한반도 신석기시대 흑요석기의 출토양상과 지역별 특징을 검토하고, 최신 흑요석 산지분석 결과를 근거로 지역 간의 원거리 교류, 신석기시대의 사회 동태와 관련된 몇 가지 문제에 대해 살펴보았다.
흑요석 산지가 있는 동북지역에서는 신석기시대 전기부터 흑요석을 사용했다. 백두산 흑요석의 공급망이 체계화되는 신석기시대 후반에 흑요석을 가장 왕성하게 사용하였으며 청동기시대와 초기 철기시대까지 계속 활용했다. 주로 가공구와 수렵구를 제작했으며, 크기가 큰 기종이 많다는 특징이 있다. 남부지역은 전기 융기문토기 단계에 가장 활발하게 흑요석을 반입했으며, 후기 이중구연토기 단계에도 흑요석을 널리 이용했다. 남부지역 신석기인은 가공구와 수렵구 외에도 어로구를 제작했으며, 일본 규슈지역으로부터 배로 흑요석을 운반해 왔기 때문에 소형 기종만 확인된다.
중서부지역은 후기, 중동부지역은 전기에만 흑요석을 사용했다. 흑요석기의 기종과 형태로 볼 때 중서부지역은 동북지역과 관련이 있으며, 중동부지역은 동북지역과 남부지역의 중간적인 성격을 나타낸다. 흑요석 산지분석 결과에 따르면 백두산 흑요석은 신석기시대 전기에 중동부지역을 거쳐서 남부지역으로 이동했다. 특히 울산 처용리유적에서 확인된 백두산 흑요석의 이동 사례는 동해안을 따라서 형성된 교류네트 워크와 밀접한 관련이 있다.
신석기시대 후기에 중서부지역에 확산된 백두산 흑요석은 동북·연해주지역과의 교류를 보여 주는 중요한 자료이며, 중서부지역에서의 흑요석으로 만든 타제 수렵구의 존재가능성을 제시했다. 한반도 남부지역의 일본 규슈산 흑요석과 한일 교류 관련 유물에 대한 검토를 통해 교류의 방향과 특징을 구체적으로 이해할 수 있었다.

영어초록

The archaeological contexts of Neolithic obsidian stone tools excavated on the Korean Peninsula were examined, and their regional characteristics were identified in this paper. Based on the most recent results of source identification analysis undertaken on obsidian unearthed from the Korean Peninsula, it was possible to explore certain issues relating to long-distance exchange between regions and social movements in the Neolithic Age.
There are a few obsidian sources in the northeast region of the Korean Peninsula, where obsidian was used to make stone tools from the early Neolithic. The systematic operation of the Mt. Baekdusan obsidian supply chain in the late Neolithic resulted in the active use of this obsidian. Obsidian continued to be used even into the early Iron Age. In the southern region of the peninsula, numerous types of obsidian from Kyushu in Japan (Koshidake, Yodohime) were actively used for stone tool production in the early and late Neolithic. This obsidian had been transported across the Korea Strait by the Neolithic people of the Korean Peninsula and the Jomon people of Kyushu on log boats and was mainly used for small sized stone tools such as arrowheads, scrapers and knives.
In the Mid-western regions of the Korean Peninsula, obsidian stone tools were used only in the late Neolithic. These obsidian stone tools appear to be related to those of the northeast region.
In the Early Neolithic, obsidian from Mt. Baekdusan found its way to the southern region through the Mid-eastern regions of the peninsula. In the late Neolithic, it spread to the Mid-western regions as well. The movement of obsidian found at the site of Cheoyong-ri in Ulsan appears to have been closely related to the exchange network that was formed along Korea’s eastern coast.
The presence of obsidian from Mt. Baekdusan in the Mid-western regions of the Korean peninsula is an important fact that illustrates the nature of exchange which took place, through obsidian, between these regions and the northeast region and Russian Primorsky Krai. In particular, it suggests the possible presence of obsidian arrowheads in the Mid-western regions of the Korean Peninsula, which may be discovered in the future. By examining the exchange of obsidian (analyzed as originating from Kyushu in Japan), along with the exchange of stone tools and pottery, the direction and characteristics of trade between the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese Archipelago in the Neolithic Age was explored.
