샹까라의 수행관과 식(識, vijna) (akara‘s Views on the Practical Methods for Liberation and the Relevance of the Conception of Consciousness (Vijna) of Vijnavda Philosophy)

초록

본 연구는 인도철학의 목적인 해탈을 위한 여러 가지 길 중에서 ‘지식을 통한 길’을 옹호하는 샹까라의 수행관과 그가 유식학에서 말하는 식(識, vijñāna)의 개념을 수용한 근거를 탐구한다. 샹까라가 제시한 수행체계로 슈루띠(śruti, 경전공부), 따르까(tarka, 지적활동), 아누브하바(anubhava, 직접적 경험)가 소개된다.
샹까라의 수행관에 대한 논의를 통해 샹까라는 인도의 전통적 요가수행체계인 요가수행이 마음의 안정만을 가능하게 할 뿐, 해탈의 장애물인 무지를 소멸시키는 지혜의 터득으로 이끌지 못한다는 입장을 취한다는 점, 지혜의 터득은 경전공부(슈루띠)를 통해, 궁극적으로는 브라흐만에 대한 직접적 전인적 체험(아누브하바)에 의해 가능하다는 점이 밝혀진다. 한편 필자는 전(前) 7식과 7식의 종자식인 알라야식의 단계를 내포한, 유식학의 식(識, vijñāna)의 개념은 샹까라의 철학에 브라흐마지(Brahmavidyā)의 터득이라는 의식적 체험을 철학적으로 접근하기 위한 하나의 방법으로 수용된 것 같다는 견해를 편다. 나아가 유식학이론을 근거로 무분별지의 관점에서 브라흐마지(Brahmavidyā)를 고찰한다. 고찰을 통해 브라흐마지(Brahmavidyā)가 참자아의 실현을 의미하고 참자아의 실현은 무분별지보다 더 근원적이고 계시적인 성격을 띤다는 점을 밝히고 브라흐마지(Brahmavidyā)는 불교의 철학적 실천적 접근 너머의 것이라는 결론에 도달한다. 맺음말에서 필자는 샹까라의 수행관에 대한 비판을 통해 슈루띠를 통한 브라흐마지(Brahmavidyā)의 터득은 실천적 수행에 의한 구체적 자기변혁을 전제로 해야 한다는 것을 주장하고 진정한 인도철학의 완성은 범아일여사상을 전하는 우빠니샤드사상과 불교사상의 통합에 있다고 보고 진정한 통합은 불교적 접근방법과 실천수행을 위주로 하여 범아일여사상이라는 궁극의 목표에 도달하는 것이라는 견해를 피력한다.

영어초록

In this essay the practical methods for liberation offered by Śaṅkara and the grounds for his adoption of the conception of consciousness(vijñāna) as in the vijñānavāda philosophy are treated. The practical methods for liberation offered by him are śruti, tarka, anubhava. As is well known Śaṅkara advocates the path of knowledge(jñāna-yoga), specifically Brahma-knowledge (Brahmavidyā), in regard to the way of liberation. The treatment of Śaṅkara's views on the question whether the Yoga as practical methods for liberation can lead to the Brahma-knowledge (Brahmavidyā) brings out that Śaṅkara is of the view that the Yoga is not able to lead to the Brahma-knowledge (Brahmavidyā) but only to the trance(samadhi) in which the duality of the subject and the object is overcome. He claims that the attainment of the Brahma-knowledge is possible only through the scripture(śruti) and the final coner-stone of the attainment of the Brahma-knowledge is the integral experience(anubhava) of the Absolute(Brahman). Moreover, I claim that the notion of consciousness(vijñāna) as in the vijñānavāda philosophy is adopted by Śaṅkara as a philosophical method in an attempt to approach the realization of the identity of Brahman and Ātman from the level of duality. In an effort to interpret the Brahma-knowledge(Brahmavidyā) from the viewpoint of the indeterminate knowledge(nirvikalpa-jñāna) as explained by the vijñānavāda philosophy I claim that the Brahma-knowledge which presupposes the self-realization seems to be beyond the Buddhistic philosophical-practical approach on the ground that the realization of Brahma is in its nature revelatory in comparison to the Buddhistic highest wisdom(prajñā) pertaining to the causal law of the material world. In the concluding remarks I claim that a true completion of the Indian philosophical studies lies in the integration of the traditional Upaniṣadic philosophy and Buddhism, and that such an integration consists in the Buddhistic approach to the central theme of the Upaniṣadic philosophy namely the identity of Brahman and Ātman in terms of theory as well as practical methods.
