    초록

    Ever since the human invention of letters several thousands yearsago, reading has been the main and reliable means to obtain knowledgeand information that people need in their livings.
    Reading had been originally considered a personal and individualactivity, helping a person mainly look inside himself, the nature and theworld surrounding him.
    But this kind of consideration has changed lately. Reading hasbecome a useful tool that assists people in interacting with one anotherand with the society as well.
    Since 2009, this change in book reading has driven many of ourcolleges in Korea to arrange new classes relating reading books towriting or debate such as <books and debate> and <reading andwriting>.
    With this change and trend in mind, this study bases itself on asmall-scaled 10-question survey carried out among 180 CAU-Ansungstudents who have taken my four different <books & debate> classesin the fall of 2012.
    Thus, this paper contains the basic data on reading habits drawnfrom my students and analyses them in the various points of view toproduce meaningful recommendations in constructing the future <booksand debate> curriculum. For example, out of 180 students in the survey, 154(85.6%) repliedthat they know how important reading is, and 23(12.8%) of those repliedsaid that they have good reading habits in their own eyes.
    But, the survey also shows the disappointing aspect of reading habitsamong the students. More than half reply that they find it hard to startreading at all or push aside books as their second priority to otherthings.
    The discrepancy between their mind and real habits regarding bookreading leads us to the fact that reading materials may play a crucialrole in helping these students get an easy start in <books & debate>.
    In this respect, this research suggests starting classes with a moreeasy-to-read material such as a novel, and then proceeding to the nextstage by taking a second book on humanities or social studiescontemplating the relevant issues raised in the first book.
    This method might be able to introduce the students more easily intothe world of books, and with their small success in the first round, ourstudents could change their reading habits gradually, and experiencereading more consilient materials deeply in the next round.
    By doing this, the method will also help our students achieve the goalof <books and debate> class, aiding them to enhance their readingcapacity to form their own ideas and to interact with the outside worldwhile reading books.
