<劉生傳>의 ‘通俗性’에 대한 再考 (reconsideration about conventional inclination of )

초록

본고는 19세기에 창작된 것으로 추정되는 <劉生傳>이란 漢文小說의 通俗적 성향에 대해 재고찰하려는 목적에서 작성된 것이다. <유생전>은 19세기에 창작된 愛情傳奇小說 가운데 하나로 그간 작품의 해석과 관련하여 부정적인 ‘통속화’가 드러난 작품으로 인식되어 왔다. 하지만 <유생전>에 나타난 ‘통속적’ 성향의 경우 시각을 달리해 분석해 볼 필요가 있으며 본고는 그점에 집중하였다.
<유생전>의 ‘통속적’ 성향은 여타 작품과 비교해 봤을 때, 서술방식과 인물형상의 측면에서 주목할 필요가 있다. 우선 서술방식의 측면에서는 ‘현실’적 갈등을 ‘우연’적으로 해결하는 서사가 반복적으로 서술되고 있다. 즉, 단편적인 사건 여러 개가 반복 서술되는 형태로 구성되어 있는데 이는 당대 유행하던 국문소설의 서사방식을 흡수하여 적극적으로 창작에 활용한 방식으로 보인다. 다음으로 전대 소설에 자주 등장하는 ‘익숙한 모티프’가 서술방식에 차용되고 있음을 볼 수 있는데, 이와 같은 서술방식은 대중친화적인 요소를 고려한 흥미추구의 방식으로 ‘통속성’이 극도로 발휘된 형태의 것으로 보인다.
작품의 이러한 성향은 ‘인물형상’의 측면에서도 아울러 확인할 수 있는데, 남녀주인공의 경우 ‘孝-節’이라는 중세적 이념을 적극적으로 실천하고 있으며 그러한 행동에 대한 ‘보상’이 부여되는 방식으로 서술됨으로써 ‘보수적 윤리의식’을 강조하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이와 함께 주변인물에 대해서는 ‘善-惡’의 대립구도를 통해 ‘善’한 역할을 수행한 인물에 대해서는 보상을 해주는 반면, ‘惡’한 역할을 수행한 인물에 대해서는 가차없는 ‘징벌’을 통해 ‘포폄’의식을 여실히 드러내고 있음을 볼 수 있다.
<유생전>의 서술방식과 인물형상은 19세기 한문소설이 가지고 있는 이념추구적 성향의 일부분이 드러난 형태로 이해할 수 있다. 다시 말해 19세기 한문소설의 경우 국문소설의 ‘상업적’지향과는 거리가 있기 때문에 상대적으로 작품의 내적 요소에 있어 ‘대중적’인 성향을 강조하는 방향으로 진행될 수 밖에 없었던 것으로 보인다. 때문에 ‘통속성’의 경우 또한 당대에 유행하던 작품의 모티프를 적극적으로 활용하여 창작하였던 것이며, 그때 ‘통속성’의 지향은 ‘흥미성’을 강화하는 방법으로 구축되었던 것으로 보인다. 따라서 ‘현실적 갈등’의 ‘우연적 해결’이나 전대 소설의 모티프 활용 등은 작품의 ‘통속성’ 강화를 위한 장치로 고안된 것이며, 대중친화적 성향은 여기에서 연유된 것으로 이해된다. 한편 인물 형상에 있어 ‘孝-節’로 대변되는 중세적 이념을 추구하는 양상은 당대를 인식하는 한문소설의 대응을 명확하게 보여주는 것으로 ‘통속성’ 역시 작가의식과 관련지어 이해할 필요가 있다.
따라서 <유생전>의 ‘통속성’에 관해 그간 ‘부정적’으로 인식하던 것에서 벗어날 필요가 있으며, 이때 <一夕話>, <李花實傳>, <片玉奇遇記> 등 19세기 한문소설에서 중세적 이념이 강화되던 양상을 ‘통속성’과 관련해서 주목할 필요가 있을 것으로 판단된다. 때문에 19세기 한문소설의 ‘통속성’은 한문소설이 당대적 흐름 속에서 어떻게 반응하고 있었는지를 보여주는 예라 할 수 있으며 이를 유의해서 이 시기 작품을 검토해야 할 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

The intention of this paper is to investigate on the conventional characteristics in the classical Chinese novels like <you-sang-jeon> which is approximately estimated to be released in 19th century. <you-sang-jeon> is one of the aijing-jeongi novels in 19th centurie sand it has been perceived as showing negative ‘conventionalization’ interms of novel appreciation.
However, the ‘conventional’ characteristics that <you-sang-jeon> shows need different perspectives on the analysis aspect and this paper paid much attention to it. The ‘conventional’ characteristics of <you-sang-jeon> drag much attention to the aspects of the descriptive method and character formation compared to other novels in the same category.
First of all, the repetition of the same narration style has been applied to the story which resolves the ‘realistic’ conflicts in ‘accidental’ ways. That is, it is composed of the repeated short stories, which shows that this method proactively adapted the descriptive method of Korea novel that was popular at the moment back in 19th centuries.
Secondly, ‘familiar motif’ which shows up in previous generation novel often is used as a descriptive method and this descriptive method seems to be developed into extremely conventional characteristics as considering crowd-familiarization factor and pursuing interests.
These characteristics of the novel are deeply reflected on ‘character formation’ aspect. In case of male and female characters, it emphasized on the ‘filial duty-devotion’ which is medieval ideology and ‘conservative moral consciousness by granting the rewards for those behaviors. With this, it straightforwardly expresses the consciousness of ‘commendation-evaluation’ by showing that certain marginal characters on ‘good’ side get rewards but other characters on ‘evil’ side end up with ‘punishment’ through the conflicting structures of ‘good and evil’ The description method and character formation of <you-sang-jeon> could be understood as reflection of characteristics of 19th century stories in classical Chinese.
That is to say, 19th century stories in classical Chinese seems to have no choice but to relatively progress on the ‘popularity’ aspect of inner factors because it had a far distance from the ‘commercial’ oriented characteristics of Korean novel.
Because of this, ‘conventional’ characteristics was used by actively adapting novels’ motives popular at the moment and the progression of ‘conventional’ characteristics seems to be developed to intensify the ‘interests’. Thus, using ‘accidental resolve’ of ‘realistic conflicts’ or motif utilization of previous generation novel is devised to intensify ‘conventional’ characteristics and the crowd-friendly characteristics resulted from this. On the other hand, the character formation aspect which pursues ‘filial duty-devotion’ representing medieval ideology clearly shows the response of Korean novel recognizing the age and the ‘conventional’ characteristics also needs to be understood with relating to the author’s senses.
Consequently, the negative recognition towards ‘conventional’ characteristics of <you-sang-jeon> needs to be reconsidered and it is expected that much light would be shun on the aspects that medieval ideology is intensified and ‘conventional’ characteristics are related with 19thcenturies classical Chinese like <il-suk-wha>, <e-wha-sil-jeon> and <pyun-ock-ki-woo-ki>.
Because of this, the ‘conventional’ characteristics of 19th centuries Korean novel could be regarded as an example which shows how Korean novel responded to major novel flowat the moment back in 19th centuries and this draws careful analysis to wards novels atthatera.
