조기유학생 학업수행과 적응에 관한 연구: 미국 소도시 유학생들의 사례 (A Study on Academic Performance and Adjustment of Youths Studying Abroad: A Case of Korean Youths in a Small Town in the U.S.)

초록

This study sheds light on the adjustment process experienced by youth studying abroad, focusing on their process of adjustment to academic life. It is hard to generalize about the adjustment processes of youths studying abroad, because the adjustment varies depending on diverse factors: country and regional characteristics, the school type where they study, age, cultural capital, and the academic record of each individual youth. In this study, I describe the adjustment process of youths who are studying in a small campus town in the U.S. Although the mass media often depicts the failures and delinquencies of youths studying abroad, little is in fact known about how young people perform and think about their academic life while they are adjusting to study abroad, especially in a small town rather than in a big city.
Thus, I attempt to show what they experience and how they evaluate the study process; what things they perceive as either favorable or difficult; and finally, how we can understand their adjustment process as compared with young immigrants.
Overall, the youths in this study faced difficulties from differences of language, culture and school structure in the beginning phase of their adjustment. They had to struggle with the difficulties presented by class presentations, discussions, writing, homework tasks, and class procedures which are different from Korean schools’.
Meanwhile, some other differences eventually become positive factors on adjustment, reminding the young people of their difficult school experiences in Korea. Positive factors included homework style, positive experiences with teachers, the evaluation system, variations of activity and the accepting atmosphere toward diversity.
