초록

사상은 권력 지배층의 통치철학으로 사회상을 조정하고, 문화 예술 전반에 영향력을 행사한다. 본 논문은 조선 초․중․후기의 사상과 사회적 조건을 살피고, 회화에 표현된 색을 통해 사회변화와 색의 연관성을 탐구하는 것이다.
성리학을 건국이념으로 조선은 유교적 검박한 생활태도가 중시되어 색이 절제되었다. 문인사대부의 남화 우월주의는 일종의 신분제 사회질서체제를 중시하는 명분론과 함께 화원풍 채색화를 폄하하기에 이르렀다. 그러나 조선 후기 봉건적 사회 모순을 개혁하는 실학이 대두되고, 사회자본의 발달․신분제의 붕괴 등과 함께 색은 회복되기 시작한다.
이러한 색은 崇儒抑佛의 시대에도 살아있던 불교․도교․무교와 같은 종교 색채의 영향이기도 하다. 종교나 특별한 祭儀 등에 제한되어 있던 색이 민간으로 내려옴을 시사하는 것이다. 또한 왕실․지배층의 실용과 감상으로 국한되었던 색이 민중으로 넓어짐을 의미하는 것이다. 회화의 색은 18세기 풍속화와 민화의 발달로 구체화되었다. 풍속화의 색은 사실주의 관점에서 색의 재현에 집중되었다면, 민화는 五彩를 중심으로 상징적․장식적․주술적 목적으로 자유롭게 표현하는 특징을 갖는다.
권력지배층의 시각은 전통회화에 가치관을 표현하고자 하였으며 곧 회화에 나타나는 색은 시대의 가치관을 의미하는 것이었다. 본 연구가 사회학적 측면에서 전통회화에 나타난 색의 의미를 주목함으로써, 전통색 연구방법의 시각과 범위를 확대해 주리라 믿는다. 동시에 실제적이고 입체적인 전통색 연구의 예시가 되기를 바라며, 학제 간 연구에도 기여되기를 바란다.

영어초록

Throughout history, the ruling philosophy of those in power controlled society and greatly influenced culture. This research looks at the history of and the social conditions in the early, middle and late Chosun Dynasty and studies the relationship between color and social change by looking at color as represented in paintings.

Sung Confucianism was the foundation of the Chosun Dynasty which led to simple lives and a moderation of the use of colors. As a result, the literary class, which occupied a high status in society, looked down on the colored paintings of the professional artists. However, with the rise of practical sciences and the reform of the feudal system, and coinciding with the development of social capital and the fall of the class system, color began to rise in significance.

These colors were influenced by the colors of Buddhism, Taoism and Shamanism even during the period when religions other than Confucianism were repressed, which suggests that these restricted colors were being used by common people even during that time. It also suggests that colors used solely by the royal and ruling classes spread to the common people. The colors of the paintings embody the development of genre and folk paintings during the 18thcentury. If the colors of genre paintings represented realism then the o-chae(the five traditional colors)of the folk paintings were symbolic, ceremonial and of sorcery.

The ruling classes wanted to express the value of traditional paintings but the ensuing paintings had color that represented the value of the times. This research focuses on the colors of traditional paintings as seen from a social standpoint and is hoping it will be able to expand the scope and viewpoints of the methods of studying traditional colors. It is hoped this research will exemplify the actual and temporal aspects of the study of traditional colors and help those students in this and other fields.
