초록

공연장의 음향 엔지니어는 공연을 운영하면서 많은 선택의 갈림길에서 고민과 결정을 한다. 하지만 이러한 선택은 기술적인 고찰을 통해 이루어질 뿐 인문학적인 고찰은 전혀 고려되지 않는다. 공연예술은 무대의 인간이 객석의 인간에게 어떠한 메시지를 전달함과 동시에 객석의 인간은 다양한 반응을 통해 무대의 인간과 공감을 형성해나가는 예술 장르이다. 그렇기에 무대와 객석 사이의 매개자인 음향 엔지니어는 기술적인 고찰뿐만 아니라 철학, 미학, 예술학 등 인문학 전반의 고찰을 통한 메시지 전달을 할 필요가 있다.
본 연구에서 본 연구자는 다목적 공연장에 많이 보급된 서라운드 음향 시스템과 디지털 리버브 장비를 이용하여 구현한 리좀(Rhizome)적 소리표현에 관해 서술하였다. 이것은 무대와 객석의 분절된 공간설정뿐만 아니라 우리의 감성적인 위치설정 역시 무대를 '위'로 객석을 '아래'로 인식하는 분절된 이항대립을 청감각적으로 해결하기 위한 새로운 음향 기법이다. 이 기법을 활용한 춤패 배김새의 36주년 정기공연 <길>에서는 전통적으로 사용되는 투명한 막과 같은 평면적인 소리구현, 즉 소리의 거목(巨木)이 아닌 객석 전체에 넓게 퍼진 전체가 그리고(et)의 접속사로 조직되어 있는 리좀적 소리표현을 구현하였다. 그리하여 무대와 객석이 분절된 이미지로서의 공간이 아닌 여러 의미와 이미지가 상호교환하는 같은 공간임을 시사했다.
주로 시각적 지각에 의존하는 무대미술이나 무대조명에 관한 미학적 고찰의 연구는 활발하게 이루어지는 편이다. 하지만 무대음향에 있어서 다양한 인문학적 고찰은 이뤄지지 않은 채 기술적인 고찰만 이뤄지고 있다. 청각적 지각을 글로 명확히 표현한다는 것은 몹시 어려운 일이지만 무대음향 분야에서 인문학적인 고찰을 배제한 채 기술적인 고찰에만 매진하는 것은 무대와 객석이 주고받는 정확한 메시지를 놓치게 될 우려가 있다. 그리고 무대와 객석의 매개자인 음향 엔지니어는 인간이 아닌 음향 장치들의 연결 사이에 배치된 또 다른 장치로서만 작동하게 될 것이다. 음향 엔지니어가 장치가 아닌 매개자로서의 인간으로 존재하기 위해서는 인문학적 고찰을 통한 다양한 소리의 표현 방법이 필요하다. 그리고 소리의 표현 방법뿐만 아니라 이러한 연구의 방법론 또한 다양한 방식으로 시도하는 것이 필요할 것이다.

영어초록

A sound engineer in a performance hall makes many decisions while operating a performance. However, this selection is made only through technical considerations, and humanities considerations are not considered at all. Performing arts is an art genre in which people on stage deliver certain messages to people in the audience, and at the same time, people in the audience form empathy with people on stage through various reactions. Therefore, it is necessary for sound engineers, who are the mediators between the stage and the audience, to deliver messages through consideration not only of technical considerations, but also of the humanities, such as philosophy, aesthetics, and arts.
In this research, the researcher explained the sound expression of rhizome-like implemented using the surround sound system and digital reverb equipment widely used in multi-purpose performance halls. This is a new sound technique to audibly resolve the segmented binary opposition that recognizes the stage as 'up' and the audience as 'below' in not only the segmented spatial setting of the stage and the audience, but also our emotional positioning. In Gil, a regular performance for the 36th anniversary of the dance group Baegimsae using this technique, a flat sound like the traditionally used transparent membrane is realized, that is, the whole that spreads widely throughout the audience rather than the huge tree of sound and(et) The rhizome-like sound expression organized by the conjunctions of Thus, it was suggested that the stage and the audience are not a space as a segmented image, but the same space where various meanings and images are mutually exchanged.
The study of aesthetic considerations on stage art and stage lighting, which mainly depend on visual perception, is actively conducted. However, in terms of stage sound, various humanities considerations are not being made, only technical considerations are being made. It is very difficult to clearly express auditory perception in writing, but focusing only on technical considerations excluding humanities considerations in the field of stage acoustics may result in missing the precise message exchanged between the stage and the audience. And the sound engineer, the intermediary between the stage and the audience, will only act as another device placed between the connections of non-human sound devices. In order for a sound engineer to exist as a human as a mediator rather than a device, various methods of expressing sounds through humanities considerations are needed. And it will be necessary to try not only the sound expression method but also the methodology of study in various ways.
