초록

새의 문학적 상상과 상징은 1990년대 들어 축적된 여성문학을 근간으로 여성의식이 발현되는 핵심적 이미지로 등장하고 있다. 1990년대 후반부터 여성작가의 소설에서는 상승하고 추락하고 집을 짓는 새의 구체적인 물질성에 기초한 상상의 체험이 풍부하게 드러난다. 나무 위에 집짓기나 상승과 추락의 몸짓 등, 새가 지니는 경계적 특징은 여성의식을 드러내기에 적합한 상상력을 제공한다.
이 논문은 다양하고 자유로운 상상력과 이미지로 주제를 구현하고 있는 여성 작가인 전경린, 한강, 김숨의 작품에서 나타나는 새의 이미지를 중심으로 여성 의식을 살핀다. 비상하는 새는 집으로 대변되는 땅에 묶여 있는 여성인물의 현실을 반증한다. 여성인물의 경계적 존재 양상은 새장에 갇힌 다리 없는 새의 이미지를 통해서도 드러난다. 공중에 떠 있는 위태롭고 고통스러운 새의 양상은 여성인물의 존재론적 인식을 드러낸다.
상승하고 추락하는 새의 격렬한 역동성 속에서도 여성 의식이 발현된다. 공기와 하나가 되어 날아오르는 새의 이미지는, 여성인물의 몸이 투명하게 공중으로 흩어지는 변신의 상상력을 촉발하고 바람이 불러일으키는 특별한 욕망의 계기를 형상화한다. 거짓 희망에 부딪혀 추락하지만 상승 욕망을 부추기는 공기에 몸을 맡겨 새롭게 날고자 하는 무모한 열정은 참혹한 현실을 변모시키는 상상력이다.
새의 둥지와 새장의 대비는 집과 가정에 대한 여성 의식을 드러낸다. 새는 알을 낳기 위해서만 집을 짓는다는 점에서 둥지는 사랑의 결실이다. 인간이 만든 새장은 새를 단순히 가둔다는 의미 때문에 문제적인 것이 아니라, 그들이 사랑할 기회를 박탈했다는 점에서 더 사악하다. 새장은 사랑이 없는 집이다. 아파트 베란다에서 떨어져 죽는 여성인물은 새장의 횃대에서 갑자기 떨어져 죽어버린 새의 이미지와 겹친다. 자신의 몸을 자연의 외기에 맡기고 자연과 하나 되기를 추구하는 여성인물의 심리는 이러한 새의 집에 대한 동경을 드러낸다.

영어초록

Literary imaginations and symbolizations of birds, which have been done from ancient times on, are actively made in modern novels. Especially, in many female authors' novels which have appeared after 1990. these imaginations and symbolizations of birds are the main motif to express women's outlook on life. Imaginations derived from the birds' tangible features are made abundantly in after 1990 female authors' novels. Those features are flying into the sky, descending in the air and making nests on the trees that are the borderline between the sky and the earth. Because birds can fly into the sky meantime can sit on the land, they have boundary characteristics. Birds' boundary characteristics are the adequate sources of imaginations to reveal women's way of thinking. Also, birds' actions to build nests using only their bodies without any instruments are led to literary imaginations of women and their houses This paper investigates women's mentality in Jeon Gyunglin, Han Gang and Kim Sum's novels by focussing on the birds' images. These female authors make various and free imaginations and images to express the main theme of their novels. These novels' major imaginations of birds, that is to say, birds' flying, wings, and nests, are based on Gsaton Bachelard's dynamic birds-related imaginations made in his novels, “Air and Dreams” and “Poetics in Space”.
Flying birds represent the reality of female characters who are tied to the earth symbolized by houses. Levitation is the unusual motion that reflects hostility to earth-based houses' characteristics; disgusting obsession and meaningless repetition. Derived from the unstable state between the sky and the earth, levitation is a painful handicap. Meanwhile, the boundary space between the sky and the earth is the only place where women can dream to fly. No-leg birds confined in a cage represent female characters' borderline-like situations. These birds can not sit on the floor because they have no leg and can not fly because they are confined in a cage. An angel whose body is inadequately attached to the ideally-shaped wings also expresses the thoughts of women who wander on the border between the sky and the earth and try to escape from the situation. Boundary existence is manifested in the birds' up-flying and down-flying motions.
Cages and birds' nests express women's attitudes to houses and homes. Nests are the results of love because the birds make nests only to lay eggs. Human-made cages are bad not only because they confine birds but also because they deprive birds of chances of love. Cages are houses without love. The image of female character who falls off the high apartment to die overlaps that of the bird which suddenly falls off the cross-bar of the cage to die. Using their round chests, birds rotate repeatedly their bodies to make round-shaped nests like their round chests. Birds' longing for nests reflect mentality of women who want to let their bodies free in outside nature and to unite with nature.
