‘이리 멘젤’ 영화의 희극성 고찰 - <가까이에서 본 기차>와 <줄 위의 종달새>를 중심으로 - (A thought on comicality shown in Jiri Menzel's movies - Focused on the movies Closely Watched Trains and Larks on a String)

초록

본고는 이리 멘젤이 오늘날에 이르기까지 체코 영화사에서 확고한 자리를 차지할 수 있었던 원동력이 된 걸작 <가까이에서 본 기차>와 <줄 위의 종달새>를 중심으로 이리 멘젤의 영화세계를 고찰하는 데 목적을 둔다. 밀로스 포만과 마찬가지로 멘젤 역시 서구의 감독들보다는 체코의 소설가들에게 더 큰 영향을 받은 감독이다. 따라서 본고는 역사의 특이성 속에서 발현한 그의 영화들의 특성을 살피는 것을 목적으로 삼는다.
체코의 뉴웨이브 영화에서 통일된 미학을 찾을 수는 없다. 다만 미학이 아니라 ‘코미디, 리얼리즘, 정치, 아방가르드, 초현실주의’ 등의 장르로 나누어 설명할 수는 있다. 이중 이리 멘젤은 ‘희극과 리리시즘’을 통해 설명할 수 있는 작가이다. 그의 영화에서 희극성은 예술적 표현의 서정성과 비애를 전제한 개념으로 수렴되는데, 이 희극적 감수성을 이용해 그는 당대 검열관들의 눈을 피하는 데 성공했다. 따라서 멘젤의 영화에서 주인공 캐릭터가 우스꽝스러운 것은 ‘개인적이고 소극적이며, 또한 무능한 소시민’을 통해 검열을 피하기 위해서라 봐야할 것이다. 이러한 캐릭터의 특성은 보흐밀 흐라발의 소설에서 나타났던 ‘공산주의 사회의 경직성에 대한 소극적인 저항 정신’과도 일맥상통한다.
<가까이에서 본 기차>는 원작소설이 가진 비순행적 구조를 버리고 연대기적 구성을 택한 작품인데, 내레이션을 통해 영화는 ‘주인공의 1인칭 시점’을 유지한다. 한편 <줄 위의 종달새>에서 배경은 마치 연극무대인 양 활용되는데, 영화를 ‘연극화’시킴으로써 감독은 연출자의 발언권을 지킬 수 있게 한다. 즉, 리얼리티와는 거리를 둔 이러한 연극성은 소외효과의 측면에서 바라볼 수도 있고, 브레히트를 해석할 때처럼 ‘사회, 정치적 의미’와 관련시켜 해석할 수도 있다.
<가까이에서 본 기차>와 <줄 위의 종달새>의 두 작품에서 멘젤은 주제를 직접 드러내지 않고 숨기면서 표현하려 하였다. <줄 위의 종달새>에는 사회주의에 대한 회의가 숨겨져 있고, <가까이에서 본 기차>에는 체코의 국제적 상황이 감추어져 있다. 이를 파악하기 위해 본고는 지라르의 욕망모델을 빌려 필름의 진의를 파악하고자 한다. 이 모든 과정은 결국 이리 멘젤을 ‘지성과 인내’를 통해 훌륭한 ‘저항 예술로서의 영화’를 완성한 작가라 부르도록 한다는 데 있다

영어초록

This thesis aims to look into Jiri Menzel's world of movies focusing on his two masterpieces of <Closely Watched Trains> and <Larks on a String>, which served him with a solid place in the history of Czech movies up to now. Like Milos Forman, Jiri Menzel was also more influenced by Czech novelists than by Western movie directors.
This thesis first looks at the characteristics of Menzel's movies emerging from the peculiarity of history and then enumerates the attributes of his movies adapted from Bohumil Hrabal's novels. This will be the work of tracing the extraordinary record of performances in which an artist has survived in inevitably repressive social situations,enabling us to reconfirm the value of paradoxical aesthetics derived from all the ages.
It is not possible to find a unified aesthetics in New-Wave movies of Czech. Instead, trends of Czech movies can be explained in divisions of diverse genres such as comedy, realism, politics, advance guard,surrealism, etc. Of them all, Jiri Menzal is illustrated by comedy and lyricism. Comicality in his movies is the idea assuming the lyricism and sorrow of artistic expression, and using this comic sensitivity he managed to avoid the eye of the censors in his time. Thus, the hero's funny character in Menzel’s movies was devised to avoid censorship through ‘a petty bourgeois personal, passive and incompetent.’ This feature is also in line with ‘the passive resistant spirit against the rigidity of a communist society’ shown in Hrabal's novels.
<Closely Watched Trains> is the work that adopted a chronological plot shedding the non-chronological order of the original novel. The movie uses narration through the hero’s first-person point of view, On the other hand, <Larks on a String> uses its background waste iron dump as if it were the stage. By dramatizing a movie, Menzel succeeded in allowing the producer to have a voice. If we have to call his movies dramatic, it seems more like a tragedy than a comedy. Dramatizing performance of distancing from reality can be read in terms of distancing effect, or Menzel can also be interpreted in relation to ‘social or political significance’ as with Brecht.
<Closely Watched Trains> and <Larks on a String> are both the movies that refer to the theme in an effective manner. In these works,director Menzel expressed his theme in concealment rather than by direct exposure. <Larks on a String> keeps hidden a doubt about socialism, while <Closely Watched Trains> Czech international situation. To conclude, Jiri Menzel is considered an author who has completed an excellent ‘movie as resistance arts’ through his ‘intellect and perseverance.’
