시조에 동반 출현하는 새의 수용 양상과 의미 연구 ― 까마귀와의 동반 출현을 중심으로 ― (A study on the pattern of acceptance and meaning of birds appearing together in sijo -focusing on cases where crows appear with other birds-)

초록

시조는 자연환경이나 동식물 등 우리 생활과 밀접한 곳에서 시의 소재를 취하는 경우가 많다. 본고는 그중 하늘을 날 수 있어, 예로부터 사람들에게 각별한 의미를 지녔던 ‘새’ 에 주목해 보았는데, 특히 시조에 함께 등장하는 새 중에서 가장 많은 출현 빈도를 보이는 까마귀를 중심으로 하여 그와 동반 출현하는 새 중에서 2회 이상의 빈도를 보이는 다섯 종류의 새를 대상으로 그 수용 양상과 의미에 대하여 살펴보았다.
우선, 까마귀와 동반 출현하는 다섯 유형의 새가 시조에 어떠한 양상으로 수용되었는지를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 까마귀와 까치의 조합이 5회로 가장 많이 출현했고, 뒤를 이어 학이 4회, 백로가 3회, 그리고 갈매기와 해오라기가 각각 2회씩 수용되어 있음을 확인하였다. 그리고 각각의 유형이 시조에 수용된 위치(초·중·종장)와 표기 형태 등을 통해서 유형별 수용 양상을 정리해 보았다.
다음으로, 앞서 정리한 다섯 유형의 새 조합이 시조에서 갖는 상징적 의미를 작품 분석을 통해서 살펴보았다. 첫 번째, ‘까마귀 + 까치’ 유형에서는 모든 작품에서 <견우와 직녀> 설화의 ‘烏鵲(橋)’의 형태로 수용되어 남녀 간 이별의 슬픔을 형상화하고 있었다. 두번째, ‘까마귀 + 학’ 유형에서는 까마귀가 전횡을 휘두르는 權⾂을 상징하고, 학은 고결한 선비를 상징하면서 서로 의미상 대비되는 경우를 확인할 수 있었고, 또 다른 작품에서 까마귀는 이른바 ‘反哺⿃’의 모습으로 수용되어 효자를, 학은 ‘鶴髮’의 모습으로 늙은 부모님을 의미하면서 부모와 자식의 관계를 나타내기도 하였다. 세 번째, ‘까마귀 + 백로’ 유형의 첫 작품에서 까마귀는 혼란한 朝廷을, 백로는 순수한 시인의 동생을 의미하면서 의미상 대조를 이루었고, 두 번째 작품에서 까마귀는 겉은 검지만 속은 흰 새로, 곧 시인 자신을 포함한 개국 공신들을 뜻하고, 백로는 이와 반대로 겉은 희지만 속은 검은 새로, 고려의 遺⾂을 상징적으로 드러내고 있었다. 그리고 네 번째, ‘까마귀 + 갈매기’ 유형에서는 두 새가가진 색깔에 초점을 맞추어 까마귀는 검은색으로 부정적인 것을 대표하고, 백구(갈매기)는 흰색으로 긍정적인 것을 뜻하는 소재로 기능하고 있었다. 끝으로 다섯 번째, ‘까마귀 + 해오라기’ 유형의 두 작품에서 까마귀와 해오라기는 모두 검고 흰 깃털의 색깔을 중심으로 작품에 수용된 경우인데, 이들 색깔은 긍정과 부정의 속성을 드러내는 것이 아니라, 검은 것은 검은 대로, 흰 것은 흰 대로 고유한 특성이 있다는 것을 상징적으로 드러내기 위한 소재로 활용되었다는 점에서 앞선 ‘까마귀 + 갈매기’의 유형과는 궤를 달리함을 확인하였다.
아쉬운 부분이 적지 않다. 본고의 이러한 미진한 부분은 후속 연구를 통해서 보완하고자 한다.

영어초록

Sijo often takes its subject matter from the natural environment or living creatures, among other things that are closely related to our daily lives. This study focuses in particular on the crow, which has been associated with a special significance for people since ancient times due to its ability to fly, and examines the perception and meaning of the crow as well as five other birds that appear in the sijo along with the crow at least twice.
First, we examined how the five bird types that appeared with crows were accepted in the sijo. We found that the combination of crows and magpies appeared most frequently, in five instances, followed by cranes, in four instances. Egrets appeared three times, whereas seagulls and herons each appeared twice. In addition, the acceptance patterns of each type were summarized based on the location where each type was accepted in the sijo (cho, middle, and jongjang) and the form of the notation.
Next, we examined the symbolic meaning of the combinations of the five types of birds in the sijo through an analysis of the works. First, in the “crow + magpie”type, all works were in the form of “Ojakgyo”in the story of Gyeonwoo and Jiknyeo, embodying the sadness of separation between men and women. In the second category, the type of “crow + crane," the crow symbolizes a powerful minister who abuses his authority, while the crane symbolizes a noble scholar, creating a meaningful contrast between the two. In another work, the crow is accepted in the form of a “Banpojo,”representing a filial son, while the crane represents an elderly parent in the form of “crane hair,”symbolizing the relationship between parents and children.
Third, in the first work of the “crow + egret”type, the crow signified a confused Royal Court, contrasting with the egret, which referred to a pure poet’s younger brother. In the second work, the crow referred to a black bird on the outside but a white bird on the inside, meaning that the founding contributors, including the poet himself, and the egret symbolically revealed Goryeo’s loyal subject, a white bird on the outside but a black bird on the inside. The fourth category, “crow + gull,”focused on the colors of the two birds, with the crow representing negative aspects in black and the gull representing positive aspects in white. Lastly, in the fifth category, “crow + heron,”both the crow and the heron were incorporated into the works based on the colors of their black and white feathers. However, unlike the earlier “crow + gull”type, the colors were used as a symbolic material to reveal the unique characteristics of each color, whether black or white, rather than representing positive or negative attributes.
This study faces several limitations, which will be supplemented by follow-up studies.
