    초록

    Since Konstantin Stanislavski established modern acting theory, the realistic acting based upon Stanislavski System has been the most prominent acting style. However, the System relies mostly on intuition and observation, it does not offer a training process for an actor to reach the goal. For that reason, many acting teachers have tried to create an actual training process to complement the System. This attempt has been done most actively in America where teachers like Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, and Sanford Meisner influenced American acting the most. Even though their approach is completely different, all of them have the same purpose, which is to get ‘the ability to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances.’ This study deals with Sanford Meisner Technique which is the most popular among the three methods in America and it also compares it with Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler. The study tries to find out how effectively Meisner Technique functions for actor training, focusing on the actual training process rather than theoretical approach.
    Meisner Technique is being accepted rapidly as an important actor training method all over the world because of its merits. First of all, it is very simple and interesting, and does not require high intellectual level. Secondly, the students in his class do not train alone but with a partner, which is the most unique and important. While the students go through a very simple and interesting training with a partner, they don't feel any burden. Thirdly, training effects come quickly. The purpose of the training is simple and clear, which is to listen completely to the partner, to read well the partner's behavior, and to react truthfully to it. The goal of each exercise is divided step by step, and students intensively focus each part. In addition, Meisner Technique is very physical as compared to Strasberg's Method which is very psychological and Adler's which is very intellectual. Therefore, Meisner's training results are accomplished faster.
    We, however, have some difficulties to apply it to Korean acting education due to linguistic differences. Korean language forms vary greatly depending on age and relationship. It makes Korean people feel uneasy when they repeat sentences with one ending only with disregard of other person‘s social status or age. This problem can be overcome if students spend some time practicing application of verb and sentence endings.
    This study emphasizes the importance of introduction of Meisner's Technique in Korea. Its major values include simplicity, interesting training process through interaction with partner and quick outcome. Despite some linguistic difficulties, this technique should be a great benefit to Korean acting education.
