    초록

In the Chinese boycott in 1905, Shanghai merchants who handle U.S. goods did not try to participate in the boycott from the beginning, unlike those who had little to sale with U.S. goods, and they prioritized their own interests over national consciousness to the extent that they imported U.S. goods twice as many as in 1904. They are considered positively in the category of participating merchants because they participated in it from the beginning, but in reality, they did not take an active action due to the lack of motivation or obligation to participate in the boycott, and few contributed to the boycott. In addition, the leaders who led the boycott are merchants from the Shanghai Commercial Guild, but it is reasonable to assume that they led the national boycott as Shanghai Gentleman rather than as the representative of Shanghai merchants. It is true that many Shanghai merchants participated in this national movement. However, as the leading class was replaced by a civic group formed by intellectuals and students, it is difficult to say that Shanghai merchants participated in the boycott as a class. I think this should be evaluated as an individual, not as a group called “Shanghai merchants.” Shanghai was a special port for re-exporting more than 50% of imported goods and a hub for Northeast Asia's commercial network along with Hong Kong. However, The Chinese boycott of US goods was hardly successful in terms of structure because it was carried out without blocking the North and Northeast China, which re-importing many goods from Shanghai. However, it would have been difficult for importers of US goods to turn a blind eye to this profit because the exchange rate fell, giving importers an opportunity to make money. As a result, a large volume of goods was imported in 1905 when the boycott of US goods occurred, and through this boycott, Chinese national enterprises grew further focusing on consumer goods, but it can be said that Shanghai merchants did not intend this.
