나라시대奈良時代 목간과 『일본영이기日本靈異記』의 차금借金·차물借物 기록을 통해 본 고대일본의 사회상과 생활상 (Images of Society and Lifestyle in Ancient Japan seen through Nara period’s Mokkans and the Debt and Borrowing Records of the “Nihon Ryoiki”)

초록

본고는 일본에서 발견된 목간 중 돈과 물건을 빌리는 차금借金과 차물借物 기록에 주목하여 목간이 사용되었던 나라시대의 사회상과 일본인들의 생활상을 알아보기 위하여 『일본영이기日本靈異記』의 설화를 중심으로 정창원正倉院 보물고의 차용증을 참고하여 고찰해보고자 한 논문이다. 목간에 기록된 차전借銭, 월차전月借銭, 차전借銭청구서식, 차물借物과 관련된 부분은 단편적이고 결손된 부분이 많아 정확한 내용을 파악하기는 힘들다 판단했기에 정창원正倉院 보물고의 차용증과 『일본영이기日本霊異記』의 설화를 참고하였다. 이는 설화가 당시를 살아가는 사람들의 생활과 풍습 등 사회상과 생활상을 잘 반영하고 있으며 『일본영이기日本靈異記』가 주로 목간이 사용되던 나라시대의 이야기를 담고 있기 때문이다.
다양한 자료를 확인하고 검토한 결과 나라시대에는 차금借金과 차물借物이 사회적으로 빈번히 이루어지고 있었음을 확인할 수 있었는데 특이한 것은 절이나 승려가 관여한 이야기가 상당히 많다는 점인데 이는 당시 사회상과 무관하지 않다. 나라시대 후반에는 덴지 천황계天智天皇系와 덴무 천황계天武天皇系의 황통 다툼과 쇼무 천황聖武天皇 붕어에 따른 황실의 약화와 정국 불안, 쇼무 천황聖武天皇이 적극 추진한 불교 사업으로 인한 경제적 피폐, 신라와의 관계 악화, 재해와 기근 등 수많은 문제로 인하여 율령제는 붕괴하였고 사회는 혼란스러워졌다. 불교 역시 세속 권력과 결탁하여 현저하게 세속화되어 그 기능을 거의 상실하였고 조정에서 절과 승려에게 지원하던 여러 경제적 혜택을 축소 또는 철폐하자 재정충당의 일환으로 차금借金·차물借物업을 했으리라 생각된다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on debt and borrowing records of money and objects among Mokkans found in Japan and refers to the borrowing certificates in the Shosoin Treasury, centering on the stories in the “Nihon ryoiki,” in order to understand the society and the lifestyle of Nara period when Mokkans were used. Since many of the parts recorded on Mokkans regarding loan certificates, monthly loan certificates, loan request forms, and borrowed items were fragmentary and missing, it was difficult to ascertain their exact contents, this paper refers to the loan certificates from the Shosoin treasury and the discourses in “Nihon ryoiki.” This is because the tales often reflect the society and lifestyle at that time, including their daily lives and customs, and “Nihon ryoiki” contains stories from the Nara period when Mokkans were mainly used.
Reviewing and examining various documents confirms that borrowing and loaning were frequently practiced in society during the Nara period. A unique point to be noted is that there are a considerable number of stories involving temples and monks, which is not unrelated to the social situation of the time. In the late Nara period, the Ritsuryo system collapsed and society fell into chaos due to a number of problems, including a struggle between the imperial lineages of Emperor Tenchi and Emperor Temmu, the weakening of the imperial family and political instability following the fall of Emperor Shomu, economic exhaustion caused by the Buddhist projects that were actively promoted by Emperor Shomu, deteriorating relations with Silla, disasters, and famine. It is quite plausible that Buddhism was also significantly secularized in association with the secular power which led to the loss of most of its functions and the various economic benefits that the imperial court had supported temples and monks being reduced or eliminated and, therefore, borrowing and loaning business was conducted as a part of a process to restructure its financial provision.
