고려 국왕 상장례와 사위(嗣位)의 의례적 성격 (Ceremonial Characteristics of Funeral rites and Succession to the Throne(嗣位) of Goryeo Kings)

Monarchs’ ceremonies to accede to the throne are done to show the beginning and key point of the power of the state, realize the nature of their authority as the effective means which retains in power, and expose the values. In East Asia, monarchs’ accession to the throne is divided into founding a country that a new dynasty begins, abdication of the throne (禪讓) to receive heir to the throne from a living monarch, and succession to the throne (嗣位) that a heir accedes to the throne as the late king (先君) died.
In any case, legitimacy is clarified through symbolic acts to reveal power.
Among them, succession to the throne has ceremonial differences that it is done during the period of funeral rites from founding a country or abdication of the throne.
In this ceremony, successors to the throne (嗣王) reveal continuity of power through status succession by blood as the managers of the funeral rites and confirm legitimacy of the ermine by taking over the late kings’ politics. Based on the background of the idea of the ceremony, the historical meanings of ceremonies to succeed to the throne done in the Goryeo Dynasty need to be examined.
The Goryeo Dynasty made monarchs’ funeral rites based on Confucian ideas a big framework and ceremonies to succeed to the throne in front of coffins called ‘Gujeon’ were conducted in that. ‘Gujeon’ means in front of a coffin and according to the procedure of the funeral rites, it indicates the procedure to prepare a mortuary by putting a corpse in a coffin after finishing Daeryeom, that is, a funeral parlor of the king in his funeral rite.
Goryeo kings conducted the ceremony to succeed to the throne which accepts valedictory edicts in front of the funeral parlors of the kings when they were ready. And after finishing the ceremony, the kings acceded to the throne as all the officials held a congratulatory ceremony in Junggwangjeon Hall.
After that, the kings wear mourning clothes and conduct the funeral rite again.
Goryeo kings’ authority includes elements of pluralistic ideas like Buddhism or geomancy as well as Confucian ideas, but there are slight differences in social roles and politic meanings of each idea. The kings’ funeral rites were held by three-year mourning of Dansangje and Simsang and the process that the new kings hold the ceremony to succeed to the throne has found that the confucian ideas-based ceremonial structure built the biggest framework.
