일본 ‘世界史圖錄’에 나타난 古代 韓國史像 (Ancient Korean History Written in a illustrated Japanese history book)

초록

이 글은 일본 세계사 교과서의 보조 자료인 『世界史圖錄』에 나타난 고대의 韓國史像을 살펴보는 데 주안점을 두었다.
『世界史圖錄』은 ‘동아시아 세계’ 속에 한국을 위치 지은 뒤, 중국 중심의 동아시아 세계의 형성과 발전이라는 관점에서 한국사를 서술하고 있다. 이에 고대의 한국사는 ‘위씨조선의 멸망과 漢의 군현 설치’에서 시작되었으며, 이러한 군현 지배가종결되는 4세기 중엽이 되어서야 한반도 남부 지역에 고대 국가가 형성되게 되었다고 서술하고 있다. 이러한 서술은 한민족의 내적인 발전 역량을 무시하고, 중국 중심의 역사 속에 한국사를 위치 짓던 ‘植民地支配’論과 그다지 큰 차이가 없다 해도 과언이 아니다.
또한 본 도록은 ‘동아시아 세계’의 ‘형성과 전개’에 초점을 맞추어 서술하다 보니, 한국과 일본의 선사시대부터의 관계상은 논외로 하고, 삼국시대에 이르러 일본과의 관계가 시작된 것으로 서술하고 있다. 더구나 한국과 일본의 관계는 4세기 60년대 이후 왜 왕권의 대규모 침략으로 가라(가야) 지역을 지배한 내용이 그 중심 사안으로 설명되고 있다. 이러한 서술은 ‘교과서 문제’가 韓日 관계의 현안으로 등장 한 뒤, ‘임나’가 가라(가야)로 표기되는 등의 서술 상의 변화가 있음은 분명히 확인되지만, 戰前 이래의 ‘韓半島支配’論이 여전히 고대 한일관계의 기본 논리로 자리 잡고 있음을 알 수 있다.
결국 『世界史圖錄』에서 드러난 한국사상은 고대 한국의 역사를 중국의 지배에서 일본의 지배로 이어지는 피지배의 역사로 표상하고 있는 것이다. 이러한 한, 중, 일을 둘러싼 동아시아 諸國의 관계상은 일본이 자국을 東夷의 조공국 가운데 하나로 중국의 세계제국적인 질서에 포함되는 존재이면서도, 한반도를 매개로 하여 ‘東夷의 小帝國’이라는 지위를 확보한 것으로 규정하는 틀, 즉 ‘동이의 소제국’론에 기초하여 설정된 것이다. 더구나 일본 중심의 ‘동아시아 질서’는 도록에 나타난 문화의 전파 양상에 대한 설명에도 그대로 적용되어, 한반도의 영향은 논외로 하고 중국 문화와의 관련성만을 강조하는 현상을 초래하였다.
따라서 일본의 『世界史圖錄』은 중국 중심, 일본 중심의 역사상을 청산하고, 주변 민족과 주변 국가(지역)의 독자적인 역사와 문화를 인정하는 새로운 관점에서 기술될 필요가 있다. 물론 이러한 작업은 한국, 일본, 중국 등의 역사학계에서 주변국가(지역)의 독자적인 발전을 인정하고, 중심과 주변의 논리가 아닌 상호 교섭이라는 관점에서 주변국의 역사를 재조명하는 연구가 선행되어야 가능해질 것이라고 생각된다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to closely examine the account of ancient Korean history given in illustrated Japanese history book which is used in Japan as ana uxiliary textbook for world history.
After positioning Korea within an ‘East Asian world’, illustrated Japanese history book offers a description of Korean history from a point of view that centers around the formation and the development of a China-centered East Asian world. As a result, ancient Korean history, explains illustrated Japanese history book, began with ‘the fall of Wiman Joseon and the establishment of counties and prefectures by the Han Dynasty’ and it was only the 4th century for an ancient kingdom to emerge in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula when the previously-established counties and prefectures were abolished. This account is no different from the one given by the theory of ‘colonial rule’ that used to define Korean history within a China-centered history.
Since illustrated Japanese history book focuses on ‘the formation and the development’ of an ‘East Asian world’, the ancient relationship between Korea and Japan is excluded from discussion and the Koreans are said to enter a relationship with Japan during the era of the Three States. Moreover the book gives an account of the relationship between the two peoples basically revolving around the fact that Japan conquered Gaya by a large-scale military expedition after the 360s. Although this kind of account clearly shows that there have been some changes in writing Korean history such as the term ‘Imna’ being replaced with Gara(Gaya), it also testifies to the fact that colonial rule is still functioning as a theoretical basis for explaining the Korea-Japan relationship.
Illustrated Japanese history book basically depicts Korean history as the history of a race that has been alternately dominated by the Chinese and Japanese. The historical relationships among Korea, China, and Japan have been established based on the theory of ‘a small empire among the eastern barbarians’ on which, while Japan sets herself as one of the vassal states and in doing so enters the Chinese-led world order, she secures the position of a small empire within the group of the eastern barbarians. Furthermore, the book uncritically employs the Japan-centered ‘East Asian order’ so as to explain the cultural diffusion in that region and therefore solely emphasizes on the connections the Japanese culture had with China, leaving the Korean influence unmentioned.
Thus, illustrated Japanese history book should be rewritten from a different perspective, that is, to remove the China/Japan-centered historical understandings and acknowledge the distinct histories and the cultures of the neighboring races and countries. This is, of course, possible only after Korean, Japanese, Chinese historians recognize the individual developments of the neighboring countries (regions) and conduct historical researches that study their histories based on a model of interaction instead of a center-surround one.
