플라톤 윤리사상의 교육적 의미에 대한 고찰 (A Reflection on Educational Aspects in Plato’s Ethics)

초록

이 글은 도덕ㆍ윤리 교과내용에 입각하여 플라톤 윤리사상 관련 표준적 지식을 제시하기 위한 것이다. 이에 필자 자신의 고유한 해석 및 주장을 제시하기 보다 가능한 객관적 시각에서 플라톤의 사상의 주요 내용을 심도있게 다루고자 했다. 1장과 2 장에서는 플라톤 사상 이해에 유용한 몇 가지 배경적 설명이 제시된다. 먼저 1장에서는 작품 집필 시기 관련 논의들이, 2장에서는 플라톤이 대화의 형식을 집필 방식으로 채택했는지 관한 중요한 서술이 제시된다. 그리고 3장과 4장에서는 핵심 개념들이 소개된다. 플라톤 윤리사상의 보편적 진리인 선의 이데아에 대한 설명(3장) 그리고 각각 ‘영혼 삼분설’과 ‘이상국가론’이란 이름으로 플라톤적 덕인(德人)의 본질과 그의 공동체적 확장에 대한 설명(4장)이 제시된다. 마지막 5장에서는 플라톤 사상의 한계에 대한 비판과 현대적 의의를 성찰하는 논의가 제시된다. 제한된 지면 등 현실적 제약으로 여전히 만족스럽지 못한 부분들이 있기는 하지만, 필자는 가능한 일차문헌의 구문들을 직접 제시하면서 플라톤의 윤리사상과 개념을 설명하고자 했음을 밝힌다.

영어초록

This article summarizes Plato's ethical thoughts to 'provide standard knowledge of Western ethical thought to students and middle and high school teachers in S. Korea'. Therefore, this article does not intend to present the author's unique interpretations or claims regarding Plato's ethical philosophy but to objectively introduce the mainstream academic opinions on his ethical philosophy in general. Nevertheless, the author dealt in depth with the key aspects of Plato's ethical theory. Chapters 1 and 2 provide useful background explanations for understanding Plato's philosophy. Chapter 1 introduces discussions on the relationship between the major events of his life and the period of writing his work. Chapter 2 presents an important description of why Plato adopted the form of 'dialogue' as a method for writing his works. Chapters 3 and 4 introduce the core concepts of Plato's ethical thought. An explanation of the idea of the good, universal truth of Plato's ethical thought is presented (Chapter 3), and an explanation of the nature of Plato's virtue and its community expansion under the names of "the tripartite theory of soul" and "the theory of ideal state",(Chapter 4) respectively. Lastly, Chapter 5 presents a discussion that reflects on the criticisms of the limitations of Plato's philosophy and its contemporary relevance. Due to constraints such as limited space and the author's capacity, there are still many unsatisfactory aspects. However, the author has attempted to explain Plato's ethical philosophy and concepts by directly citing primary source passages. To properly understand any philosopher's ideas, reading their primary source documents is inevitable. It is hoped that the understanding that direct reading of a philosopher's works is necessary to comprehend their ideas will be further spread.
