Examination on ‘Drinking’ Culture during Yin-Shang Dynasty Revealed with Oracle-bone Inscriptions This thesis is inteded to study the “Drinking” culutre during Yin-Shang Dynasty by analyzing the shapes of Chinese characters related to drinking that are revealed with oracle-bone inscriptions. Chinese people give an importance to eating enough for them to think that food is the best among the 3 basic elements of life, that is, clothing, food and housing. Regarding to eating culture, since liquor was often used to offer to thealmighty or to serve important quests, liquor was considered as the most important thing among all kinds of foods. Especially, liquor played an important role related to various kinds of memorial services during Yin-Shang Period. Drinking culture which was originated from the culture under which liquor was used as a kind of stuff for memorial serive has influenced on various aspects including life styles, literature, ideology, languages and characters, etc., while having played an important role in the areas of material life, emotional life and social networking for thousands of years.
Oracle-bone inscriptions as the records of the people of Shang dynasty which was the first historical period of China have been the most direct and important empirical material for studying the ancient scripts and history of China, especially, the characters, hisotry and culture of Shang dynasty consistently. The shapes of characters of the oracle-bone inscriptions reflect the subjective shapes of the then people as well as reflecting the objective real facts in that period. Since the then people’s awareness and the cultural phenomena closely related to their lives are reflected to the process of creating characters, it can be said that a study on the shapes of characters of oracle-bone inscriptions is the foundation of a study on the culture of Yin-Shang Dynasty. That is, an analysis of the structure of the shapes of characters of oracle-bone inscriptions and an exploration of the fundamental meanings of such characters is a prerequisite necessary for understanding the culture of Yin-Shang Dynasty exactly. In this thesis, the writer focuses on a study on the correlation between the characters and the culture of Yin-Shang Dynasty by examining the oracle-bone inscriptions and the stuffs for memorial services related to liquor.
