프리마 포르타의 아우구스투스 조각상과 프로파간다 (Augustus of Prima Porta and Propaganda)

초록

프리마 포르타의 아우구스투스 조각상은 프린키파투스 체제와 로마 제국의 위상의 진면모를 보여주고 있는데 특히 이것의 주역이라 할 수 있는아우구스투스의 조각상을 통해 그의 과거, 현재, 미래의 업적들을 투영시키는 프로파간다의 전형이다. 역사 전체를 통해 예술은 여론을 형성하기위해 프로파간다로 이용되어왔다. 이처럼 아우구스투스 시대에 건립한 가장 유명한 조각상들 가운데 하나로서 프리마 포르타의 아우구스투스 조각상은 황제의 권력과 이데올로기를 정치적으로 선전하는 대표적인 매체였다. 이 조각상에서 아우구스투스는 자신을 훌륭한 군사적 승리자이자 전통적인 로마 종교의 철저한 복원자로 돋보이게 했고 아우구스투스가 정립한200년간의 팍스 로마나를 예언하고 있으며 동시에 고대 그리스의 황금시대를 기반으로 고대 로마의 황금시대를 상기시켜 주었다. 아우구스투스는그의 프린키파투스 체제를 안정적으로 유지하기 위해서 미술작품과 건축물을 기반으로 한 프로파간다를 전략적으로 활용했다.
아우구스투스의 신성이라는 문제는 기원전 1세기 후반에 등장한 정치적인 현안이었다. 카이사르의 암살자들, 즉 브루투스와 카시우스를 포함한공화주의파들을 패퇴시킨 공적을 기념하기 위해서 아우구스투스는 마르스울토르 신을 위한 신전을 건축했는데 여기에는 마르스 신의 조각상, 그의 정부인 베누스 여신의 조각상과 신격화된 율리우스 카이사르의 조각상 등을 특별히 안치시켰다. 이렇게 한 이유는 로마인의 시각에서는 당연한 처사이다. 왜냐하면, 율리우스 가문은 아이네아스의 아들인 아스카니우스의직계후손이기 때문이다. 프리마 포르타에는 아우구스투스의 오른쪽 종아리 옆에 벌거벗고 날개 달린 소년이 아래쪽으로 다이빙하는 돌고래의 등에앉아 있는 모습이 조각되어 있다. 아마도 이 소년은 큐피드 신을 대표했을것으로 이해된다. 베누스 여신은 큐피드와 돌고래 등과 밀접한 연관성을지니고 있다. 특히 큐피드는 베누스 여신의 아들로, 돌고래는 베누스 여신의 후원 동물로 인정되고 있어서 프리마 포르타의 아우구스투스 조각상은흉갑을 착용하고 있는데 그곳에 새겨진 이미지들은 논의의 초점의 중요한대상들이었다. 흉갑의 전체적인 구성은 상하좌우로 대칭적으로 조각되어있다. 흉갑에 조각된 이미지들 사이에서 가장 중요한 조각은 그림3의 C프레임으로 파르티아인들로부터 로마군의 군기를 되돌려 받는 장면이다. 이러한 이미지들은 기원전 20년에 발생한 역사적 사건을 시사해주고 있다.
그림3의 B프레임은 전반적으로 천상의 세계를 상징하며 팍스 로마나와 황금시대의 개막 등을 표출시키고 있다. 이러한 이미지의 메시지는 로마 제국의 미래를 상징하는 것으로 태양과 달이 로마인들에게 평화와 번영을가져다줌으로써 로마 제국의 모든 지역에서 풍요롭고 안락한 황금시대의개막을 시사해주었고 그것을 펼친 주인공은 아우구스투스였음을 돋보이게했다. 그림3의 D프레임에 나타난 이미지들에 대해 자세히 살펴보면, 이 프레임은 현대와 미래를 상징해주는 역할을 한 캐릭터들로 아폴로, 디아나, 텔루스 등의 이미지들을 등장시켰다. 특히 아우구스투스의 프리마 포르타의 텔루스 도상은 프린키파투스 체제의 안정화와 평화 및 풍요로움을 담보하는 로마 제국의 미래를 지향하는 텔루스, 이탈리아, 케레스, 마그나 마테르, 베누스 등을 상징하는 다원적인 의미로 파악할 수 있다. 따라서 프리마포르타의 아우구스투스 조각상에서 흉갑 부조들의 역사적 배경이나 전제조건은 기원전 20년 파르티아인들로부터 로마군단의 군기반환뿐만 아니라 기원전 17년 루디 사이쿨라레스의 거행 등과 같은 배경을 기초로 하였으며프리마 포르타의 아우구스투스 조각상에 있는 신들의 이미지는 아우구스투스가 신들에 의해 보호되었고 그가 전통적인 로마 종교를 복원하였음을 표출시켰다.

영어초록

The sculpture of Prima Porta Augustus depicts the authenticity of the Principate system and the status of the Roman empire, and is particularly representative of a propaganda that projects the accomplishments of his past, present and future. Throughout history, art has been used as propaganda to influence public opinion. As one of the most famous sculptures built during the Augustan period, Prima Porta was a representative medium for politically promoting the emperor's power and ideology. In this sculpture, Augustus describes himself as a fine military victor and a thorough supporter of the Roman religion, prophesying the Pax Romana he himself set, and at the same time reminding people of the Golden Age in the Roman Empire, based on the Golden Age in ancient Greece. In order to maintain his Principate system in a stable manner, Augustus used propaganda based on art and architecture strategically.
The problem of the divinity of Augustus was a political issue that emerged in the first half of the first century B.C.. To commemorate the achievement of defeating Caesar's assassins including Brutus and Cassius, Augustus built a temple for Mars Ultor, including statues of the god Mars, the statue of the goddess Venus, and the statues of divine Julius Caesar. The reason for this is obvious from a Roman point of view, because the Julius family are direct descendants of Ascanius, the son of Aeneas. Prima Porta Augustus is carved with a naked winged boy sitting on the back of a dolphin diving down by the right side of Augustus. Perhaps this boy would have represented Cupid. The goddess of Venus is closely related to cupid and dolphins. Particularly, Cupid was the son of the goddess of Venus and the dolphin was recognized as a supporting animal of the goddess Venus, so the divinity of Augustus in Prima Porta Augustus was clearly expressed through this connection.
In the Prima Porta Augustus, the sculpture of Augustus was wearing a cuirass and the images engraved on them were important subjects of discussion. The overall configuration of the breastplate is carved symmetrically up, down, left, and right. The most important piece among the carved images on the breastplate is the C-frame in Figure 3, which got the standards of Roman forces back from the Parthians. These images suggest historical events that occurred in 20 B.C. The B frame in Figure 3 represents the celestial world and expresses the opening of Pax Romana and the Golden Age.
The message of these images symbolized the future of the Roman Empire, suggesting that the sun and the moon would bring peace and prosperity to the Romans and thereby open up a golden age of abundance and comfort in all parts of the Roman Empire, and the main character behind these accomplishments was Augustus. Looking at the images on the D frame in Figure 3, this frame has characters such as Apollo, Diana, Tellus who have played a role in symbolizing the current situation and the future of the Roman empire. In particular, the Tellus statue on Prima Porta Augustus has a vernacular meaning symbolic of Tellus, Italy, Ceres, Magna Mater, and Venus which aims at the future of the Roman Empire, guaranteeing the stability of the Principate system and the peace and abundance of Roman Empire. Thus, the historical background and preconditions in the cuirass relief of Prima Porta Augustus were based on background events such as the return of Roman legions’ standards from the Parthians in 20 B.C., as well as the celebration of Ludi Saeculares in 17 B.C.. The images on it have revealed that Augustus was protected by the gods and that he recovered the traditional Roman religion.
