초록

본고는 元嬪洪氏의 생애와 상장례를 살펴본 사례연구로, 이글의 주된 자료는 『御製元嬪洪氏行狀』과 『淑昌宮喪草日記』 등이며 『조선왕조실록』, 『승정원일기』, 『일성록』 등 관찬자료를 폭 넓게 활용하였다.
원빈홍씨(1766~1779)는 정조의 첫 번째 간택후궁이자 洪國榮의 누이동생이다. 그녀는 13살에 조선 역사상 최초로 처음부터 정1품 빈으로 선발되었다. 그녀가 후궁이 된 것은 왕실과 연혼관계에 있었던 풍산홍씨 집안의 규수였기도 했지만 조정에서 권력자로 통했던 친오빠 홍국영의 배경이 뒷받침되었기 때문이다. 정조가 손수 쓴 『어제원빈홍씨행장』을 통해 그녀가 궁궐 안에서 근신한 몸가짐과 신중한 언행으로 정조의 특별한 사랑을 받았음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 그녀는 입궁한 지 1년 만에 창덕궁 養心閤에서 腫氣로 졸서하였고, 사망한 지 3개월이 되는 7월 5일에 한성 동부 溫水洞에 묻혔다. 그녀는 정조보다 먼저 죽었으므로 기년상이 적용되어 15개월만에 禫祭를 지낸 뒤 창의궁에 入廟되 었다.
『숙창궁상초일기』를 통해 원빈홍씨의 사망에서 입묘할 때까지 거행한 상장 절차와 의절을 살펴본 결과, 원빈홍씨의 상장례는 기본적인 규정은 『國朝喪禮補編』을 준용해서 집행하였다. 그러나 실제 행례할 때에는 1751년(영조 27)에 승하한 孝純賢嬪의 상장 절차와 1752년(영조 28)에 요절한 懿昭世孫의 상장 의례를 참고해서 치렀다. 원빈홍씨의 예제상의 지위는 국왕과 왕후보다는 한 단계 위격이 낮은 세자와 세자빈의 등급에 준한 것이다. 그런 만큼 그녀의 장례식은 화려한 절차를 적용한 호사스러운 의례인 동시에 세도가 홍국영의 권력을 과시하는 행사였다.
주목되는 점은 원빈홍씨의 廟號-墓號가 사망 직후에 최초 ‘孝徽宮-仁明園’으로 불렸다는 점이다. 보통 궁원은 세자나 세자빈 또는 국왕을 낳은 후궁들에게 적용되는 것인데, 궁호와 원호를 내린 정조의 처사는 매우 파격적인 대우였다. 이것은 원빈홍씨에 대한 정조의 총애가 극진하였던 때문이기도 하였지만, 정조의 두터운 신임을 받고 있는 홍국영의 전성기였기 때문에 그의 입김이 작용한 것이다. 이 때문에 1779년(정조 3) 9월, 홍국영이 실각하자 그녀의 사당과 무덤이 궁호와 원호로 불리는 것은 예법에 맞지 않는다는 조정의 여론에 따라, 1786년(정조 10)에 元嬪廟-元嬪墓로 강등되었다. 이는 원빈홍씨 사후 7년 만에 예제상의 위상이 추락하여 일반 후궁과 동일하게 된 것을 뜻한다.

영어초록

This is a case study that explored the life of Wonbin Hong(1766~1779), the royal concubine of King Jeongjo(1752~1800) and her funeral ceremony procedures. The main historical materials are Biography of Wangbin Hong written by King Jeongjo (御製元嬪洪氏行狀) and Diary of Funeral Ceremony of Sukchanggung(淑昌宮喪草日記), and chronicles such as Annals of Choseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄) and Diaries of Royal Secretariat of Choseon Dynasty(承政院日記) etc.
Wonbin Hong was the first concubine of King Jungjo, and was the sister of Hong Kugyeong(洪國榮), a powerful vassal at that time. At the age of thirteen, she was selected as the first rank royal concubine for the first time in the Joseon Dynasty. She became a minor consort because of her family Pungsan Hong’s(豊山洪氏) aristocratic status which was in a marriage relationship with the royal family, but it was mainly because of her brother Hong Kugyeong’s power, which was the authority of the time. According to King Jeongjo's biography of Won Bin Hong, she received a special love from the King in good deeds and prudent attitudes in the palace. However, she died in the Changdeok Palace a year after she entered the palace, and was buried in Onsudong(溫水洞), eastern Seoul on July 5, three months after her death. She passed away for only a year of mourning because she died earlier than the King Jeongjo, and later a shrine for her was established in the Palace of Changeui(彰義宮).
Accorfing to the Diary of Funeral Ceremony of Sukchanggung(淑昌宮喪草日記), the funeral procedures and rituals from the death of Won Bin Hong to the establishment of the shrine were basically to follow the rule of Revised Ritual Code of Royale Funeral(國朝喪禮補編). However, the actual funeral proceedings were carried out with reference to the funeral process of Hyosun Hyunbin(孝純賢嬪) in 1751 and the funeral process of Iso-Seson(懿昭世孫) in 1752. Wonbin Hong's funeral class was one step smaller than the king or queen, and was rated like a crown prince or a crown princess. Her funeral proceeded magnificently and luxuriantly, for she was so loved by the King and her brother was the power of the day.
It is noteworthy that Wangbin Hong's shrine was named Hyohui-gung(孝徽宮), and the tomb was named Inmyeong-won(仁明園) at the beginning. These formulas apply to the concubines who happened to be a King's mother, Though she had even no prince, she received this very special ritual treatment. Of course this was due to the favorable attitude of the King Jeongjo to her, and also because her brother Hong Kukyeong was at the top of power. Because of this, when her brother was expelled from the government in 1779, the abolition of the title of her shrine and tomb was issued, and at last in 1786 they were downgraded to the ordinary shrine and ordinary grave of royal concubines. This means that her ritual status fell to equal to the general concubines. The case of Wonbin Hong’s life ans her funeral ceremony procedures shows a very interesting and unique aspect of royal family cultures in late Choseon Dynasty.
