초록

“주님의 얼굴을 찾으려는” 라칭거-베네딕토 16세의 오랜 내적 여정은 「나자렛 예수」라는 신학적 결실로 나타났다. 예수의 모상과 선포를 그려내려는 시도인 이 책에서 그는, 역사비평적 방법의 통찰들을 수용하면서 나아가 이 방법이 지닌 한계를 넘어서 새로운 방법론적 인식들을 적용하려 한다. 복음서의 텍스트에서 어떠한 예수-상을 해석해낼 것인가 하는 것은 결국 방법론에 달려 있기 때문이다. 18세기 후반에 시작된 ‘역사적 예수 연구’는 성경 해석에 역사비평적 방법을 적용한 대표적인 사례인데, 이는 역사적 예수와 신앙의 그리스도를 대립시키고, 제자들의 신앙과 교회의 가르침을 벗겨낼수록 참된 예수의 모습에 도달할 수 있으리라는 믿음에 근거한다. 그러나 초기 단계에서 현재 ‘제3의 탐구’에 이르기까지 역사적 예수 연구가 보여준 다양한 예수-상들은 결국 가설의 수준을 크게 벗어나지 못하고 있으며, 전승층들의 원본을 발굴하여 그 위에 역사적 예수를 재구성할 수 있으리라는 희망도 난관에 봉착한 것으로 보인다.
따라서 참된 예수-상에 이르기 위해서는 역사비평적 방법의 한계를 올바로 인식하고 이를 보완하는 통합적인 전망이 필요한데, 이는 다름 아닌 역사적 해석학과 신앙의 해석학이 전체 안으로 통합되어야 함을 의미한다. 이는 달리 문자적 의미 이상으로 그 안에 감추어진 ‘더 깊은 가치’인 영적인 의미들을 헤아리는 것이며, 신앙과 이성의 조화를 전제한다. 나아가 이러한 신학적 성경 해석은 오늘날 그 어느 때보다도 주석학과 신학 사이의 대화를 요구한다. 이러한 통합적인 전망에 따라 라칭거-베네딕토 16세의 「나자렛 예수」가 그려내는 예수-상의 핵심은 결국 복음서의 예수가 진정한 예수, 원래 의미에서 ‘역사적 예수’라는 것이다. 하느님 ‘아버지와의 친교’ 및 존재론적 일치로부터 예수의 인격, 말씀과 행동 전체를 그려내고 있는 복음서의 예수야말로 역사적으로 타당성 있는 예수다.

영어초록

Ratzinger-Benedict ⅩⅥ’s Jesus of Nazareth is the theological Work which has had a long gestation in his personal search “for the face of the Lord.” To present the figure and the message of Jesus in this book he tried beyond the purely historical-critical exegesis and applied new methodological insights. Because it depends on a new methodology, we will see what figure of Jesus resulted from the interpretation of the scriptural texts. Since the second half of the 18. century ‘the Historical Jesus Research’ has applied the historical-critical method on the Scripture that is based on the division between the historical Jesus and the Christ of the faith so that the believers can find the true figure of Jesus as far as distinguishing it in the faith of the disciples and the dogma of the church. But all the sorts of the figure of Jesus which the Historical Jesus Research has produced from ‘the first Quest’ until the actual ‘third Quest’ still do not go beyond the domain of hypothesis, and nowadays it seems to be a hopeless task to reconstruct the historical Jesus from the original layers of tradition which have to be excavated.
Therefore to find for the true figure of Jesus it is necessary to recognize the limits of the historical-critical method and open it to other complementary methods. And this means a combination of two different types of hermeneutic, namely a faith-hermeneutic and a historical hermeneutic, so as to form with them a methodological whole. In other words, it needs to understand not only the literal but also the spiritual sense of the Bible as ‘the deeper value’, and to accept the harmony of faith and reason. Thus it requests today more dialogue between exegesis and theology. Under this convergent perspective the Ratzinger-Benedict ⅩⅥ’s Jesus of Nazareth portrays the Jesus of the Gospels as the true Jesus, as the real ‘historical Jesus’ in the strict meaning of the word. This means the Jesus of the Gospels which describe the personality of Jesus, all his words and all his actions in the light of his communion with the Father and the ontological union is a historically plausible Figure.
