한·일 문학상 비교 -출판사 문학상을 둘러싼 이슈와 화제- (A Comparative Study on Korean and Japanese Literary Awards –Issues and Topics Surrounding Publisher Literary Awards–)

초록

본 연구는 한·일 양국의 출판사 문학상을 둘러싼 이슈와 운영 실태를 비교·분석한 것이다. 한국과 일본에는 공히 수백 개에 달하는 문학상이 있지만, 문단과 문학 시장에 영향력을 행사해 온 유력 문학상은 대부분대형 출판사에서 운영하는 문학상들이다. 한국의 경우, 문학상 제도를 둘러싼 가장 큰 이슈는 공정의 문제로집약된다. 특히 출판사들이 자사에서 출간한 작품에 자사 문학상을 몰아주는 관행에 대한 비판의 목소리가 높다. 한편, 일본 문학상 역시 이러한 독과점과 편향성은 한국과 다르지 않다. 분게이슌주(文藝春秋)의 <아쿠타가와상>과 <나오키상>을 위시해, 고단샤(講談社), 슈에이샤(集英社), 신쵸샤(新潮社) 같은 거대 출판사가 운영하는 유력 문학상의 ‘자사 수상비율’은 대부분 4~50%에 육박한다. 그런데, 독점과 불공정성이라는 출판사 문학상의 문제점에 대한 양국 문화계의 반응에는 차이가 있다. 즉, 한국 문단이 문학상의 불공정 실태에 대해 줄기차고 절박한 비판을 지속해 왔다면, 일본의 경우에는 출판사 문학상의 상업적 속성을 기정사실로 인정하고문학상을 하나의 ‘문화 상품’으로 보려는 경향이 크다는 것이다. 문학상에 대한 이러한 태도는 문학상을 대하는 일본 미디어의 보도 행태에서 잘 드러난다. 본고에서는 <아쿠타가와·나오키상>의 사례를 중심으로 후보작 선정과 수상작 발표, 심사위원의 심사평과 시상식, 작가 개인의 신상에 이르기까지 미디어의 보도 열기를통해, 문학상에 대한 일본 사회의 관심과 문학상을 대하는 태도를 살펴보았다. 침체의 늪에 빠진 한국 문학상이 대중의 관심과 호응을 불러일으키기 위해 어떠한 노력을 기울여야 할지 참고할 대목이다.

영어초록

This study compares and analyzes the issues surrounding the literary awards of publishers in South Korea and Japan and the actual conditions of operation. There are hundreds of literary awards in both South Korea and Japan, but most of the influential literary awards that have exerted influence on the literary circles and literary markets are those operated by large publishers. In the case of South Korea, the biggest issues surrounding the literary award system are integrated into the issue of fairness. In particular, there are loud voices of criticism against the practice of publishers giving their literary awards to the works published by them. Meanwhile, Japanese literature awards are no different from South Korean ones in the monopoly and bias as such. The ratios of ‘self-awarding’ of the prestigious literary awards operated by Kōdansha(講談社), Shūeisha(集英社), and Shinchōsha(新潮社), including <Akutagawa / Naoki Award> of Bungeishnjū(文芸春秋) are mostly close to 4~50%. However, there are a difference in the responses of the cultural communities’ of the two countries to the problems of publishers’ literary awards such as monopoly and unfairness. That is, whereas South Korean literary circles have continued constant and pressing criticism of the unfair actual situation of literary awards, in the case of Japan, there is a strong tendency to recognize the commercial nature of publishers’ literary awards as a pre-established fact and view them as a ‘cultural product’. This attitude toward the literary awards is well revealed in the reporting behavior of the Japanese media to deal with the literary awards. In this paper, focusing on the case of the <Akutagawa/Naoki Awards>, the Japanese society’s interest in and attitude toward the literary awards were examined through the media’s enthusiasm for reporting on the awards ranging from the selection of nominated works, the announcement of the award winners, the judges’ reviews and awards ceremony, and the personal identity of the author. The foregoing is considered to be something that must be referred to find out what efforts should be made by the South Korean literary awards that sunk into a swamp of stagnation to arouse public interest and response.
