『잠자는 미녀(眠れる美女)』에 나타난 마계상(魔界像) 고찰 (The study of Devil World form appeared on『The sleeping beauty(眠れる美女)』)

초록

本稿では川端康成の代表的な魔界作品である『眠れる美女』を中心に＜魔界像＞を考察してみた。『眠れる美女』は老人小説に当り、作品には始終、死の影が潜む。男性の機能を喪失した老人たちは「看板のない旅館」で正体不明の薬で眠らされた美女たちと一夜を共にし、若く美しい肉体を堪能する。老人達が「眠れる美女」と一夜を過ごす「深紅のビロードのカーテン」の中、それが広がった空間である「鍵がかかった隣部屋」そして、このような夢幻的な世界を作り上げている「看板のない旅館」そのものが魔界の空間であり、重畳された現実への遮断装置によって＜異空間＞が完成している。作品の中での時間の経過は微々たるものであり、秋から冬にかけての寒い季節感は「静止した時間」を象徴するための設定である。「魔を含んだ薬」と＜魔界＞へと導く美女の肉体の堪能は「精神の麻痺」を通して老人たちに死への恐怖感さえも麻痺させる。江口老人も旅館の訪問の回数を増すたびに感覚が麻痺されたかのごとく「眠れる美女」に魅了されていく。肉体への耽溺も軽い接触から次第に視覚、嗅覚、触覚などの様々な感覚を利用し深めていく。「眠れる美女」は「純潔」を意味する<処女性>と「魔力」を持った＜妖婦性>、そして「乳房」に象徴される<母性>を持つ。作品に母性を持つ女性を登場させることが川端作品の一つの特徴であるが、子供の時、母を亡くした哀しみが母性に対するオイディプス的な渇望として表れているのである。『眠れる美女』では「背徳」の関係によって純潔を亡くした娘が、出産を経て母体となる変化の過程を通じて「浄化」を成し遂げる。処女と妖婦を経て母体によって浄化が完成するのであり、「眠れる美女」は救済を象徴する仏の姿として浄化される。老人たちは「看板のない旅館」の中で若い肉体の耽溺を通じて欲望を満足させ、そこで仏を見つけることで死への恐怖から逃れている。従って、『眠れる美女』は作品のストーリーが展開される「看板のない旅館」そのものが老人たちの欲望が解放された、殊に幻想的で、あくまでも現実世界にまで広がる＜魔界＞を形成している。

This paper focuses on “The Sleeping Beauty”. The Grim Reaper casts a shadow throughout the whole story, where the author has set 67-year-old Eguchi as a leading character. Without virile power, old men spend a night with young girls, all drugged into insensibility, in “a sort of nameless brothel”.
A room with “scarlet velvet curtains” where old men spend a night with “sleeping beauties” extends to “a locked next room”, all of which make up “a dreamy nameless brothel” or the world of devil. Kawabata concludes the setting for this story with a double blocking system—curtains and the next room—to form “a different time and space” that is cut off from the reality. The passage of time is set out through fall to late winter, which is an author’s intention to show “installed time”. These old men cannot feel fear of death because they have already “lost their minds” to “devilish drugs” and the sleeping beauties, who lead them to “the world of devil”.
Readers are able to follow the steps of carnal pleasures from a simple contact to sensory indulgence—sight, smell, and touch.
“The sleeping beauties” represents aspects of women: purity refers to “virginity”, girls with devil’s power represent “femme fatale” and breasts symbolize “maternity”.
One of Kawabata’s distinctive marks is to deploy mothers in his works to exhibit Oedipus-like hankering for mother: His sorrow over the loss of his mother in childhood. “Purification process” is realized for a “deflowered” girl who becomes a mother through birth. “Atonement” is accomplished when a virgin girl goes through a femme fatale stage and finally becomes a mother. “The sleeping beauties” have sublimated into Buddha, the savior.
The old men fulfill their decadent appetite in “the nameless brothel”, the world of devil, by pampering themselves with young girls and escaping fear of death by finding Buddha in them. It is proved that Kawabata linked the world of devil to the real world, although it is somewhat unclear. “The nameless brothel” is the main stage of the “The House of the Sleeping Beauties”, where it provides a space for the old men to relieve their sexual hunger.
