<배반하고 간 사위들의 삼급제>를 통해 본 관계의 상호성과 문제 해결의 원리 (Reciprocality of Relationship and Principle of Problem-solving through The Passing of the State Examination by Three Runaway Sons-in-law)

초록

본고에서는 설화 <배반하고 간 사위들의 삼급제>를 분석의 대상으로 삼는다. 해당 유형은 <숙종 설화> 유형과 <소박맞은 세 딸> 유형이 혼합된 변이형이라고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 단순히 유형의 혼합에서 끝나는 것이 아니라 완결된 서사를 구성한 채 기존 설화와 다른 의미를 형성하고 있어 분석의 대상으로 손색이 없다.
<배반하고 간 사위들의 삼급제>에서는 세 자매가 모두 첫날 밤 파혼 당한다. 신랑은 파혼 후 과거를 보러 가는 길에서 숙종의 도움으로 과거에 급제하게 되고 집으로 돌아와 아내와 재결합하여 행복하게 살았다.
본 연구에서는 첫날 밤 신랑과 신부가 파혼에 이르게 되는 과정을 결혼 후 관계에 미성숙했던 신랑‧신부가 가진 문제점이 드러난 것이라고 보았다.
신랑은 자신의 기준을 상대에게 강요함으로써 관계의 주도권을 확보하려 하였고, 자신의 기준을 벗어난 상대를 이해하기보단 거부했다. 신부는 관계의 중심을 둘 사이에 두지 않고 다른 사람들의 시선과 평가에 두었다. 그리고 문제가 발생했을 때 신부는 문제를 직면하고 해결하려 하지만 신랑은 문제를 외면하고 회피한다.
파혼한 신랑이 과거에 급제하는 것은 회피했던 자신의 문제에 직면하고 갈등 극복을 위한 방법을 깨달은 것의 상징이다. 숙종은 이 과정에서 신랑이 사회적 인정을 상징하는 과거에 급제하도록 도와주는 역할을 한다.
<배반하고 간 사위들의 삼급제>는 결혼으로 상징되는 새 관계의 차원에 진입한 남녀가 갈등을 극복하고 성장해 나가는 과정을 보여준다. 그리고 그 과정에서 회피보다는 직면이 본질적 갈등 해결의 길이라는 인식을 드러낸다는 점에서 변이 이전 설화들을 넘어서는 새로운 가치를 지닌 설화이다.

영어초록

This study analyzes the folk tale, The Passing of the State Examination by Three Runaway Sons-in-law. Its type is considered to be a variant form, which is a mixture of Tale of King Sukjong type and Three Mistreated Daughters type. However, it is surely worth analyzing since it forms the meanings, different from those of the previous folk tales, while it composes a completed narrative beyond the simple mixture of the types.
In The Passing of the State Examination by Three Runaway Sons-in-law, the marriage of all three sisters was broken off on the wedding night. After their break-up, the grooms passed the state examination, receiving help from King Sukjong. Then, they came back home, reunited with their wives and lived happily.
This study regarded the process in which the brides and the grooms reached the break-up on the wedding night as the revelation of the problems of the brides and the grooms who were too immature to have a relationship after marriage.
The grooms would secure the leadership in the relationship by coercing their own standards to their partners and refused them who were against the standards, rather than understanding the partner. The brides did not put the center of the relationship to other people's eyes and evaluation, not in between the two. In addition, when a problem occurs, the brides would face the problem and try to resolve that, while the grooms turn their faces away and would evade it.
The grooms who broke off a marriage pass the state examination, which is a symbol of facing their own problems they have evaded and realizing the way of overcoming conflicts. In the process, King Sukjong helps them pass the state examination, which symbolizes social recognition.
The Passing of the State Examination by Three Runaway Sons-in-law shows the process in which men and women, who entered a new dimension of relationship symbolized by marriage, overcome conflicts and grow up. In addition, in that it reveals the awareness that in the process, standing up against rather than evasion is the essential way of conflict resolution, it is a folk tale that has a new value beyond those before the variation.
