초록

이 논문은 현대사회에서 치러진 두 집안의 유교식 삼년상을 비교 분석한 것이다. 두 집안의 삼년상은 전통 유교식 예서의 규정에 잘 적용한 삼년상이었다. 두 집안 모두 현대의 이기(利器)와 직장인의 사정을 고려하는 등 현대 상황에 융화된 삼년상이었다.
소운 선생의 삼년상은 유구한 전통을 이어오는 종가였기에 유교식 전통을 지속하는 관례화 된 삼년상이었다. 생신제, 49재, 직장인을 고려한 휴일 택일, 헌작 방법의 차이, 상중 기제사 설행 등을 오랜 전통 속에서 지속해 온 생활문화와 융화하면서도 유교식 삼년상의 골격은 흐트러짐이 없었다. 한마디로 ‘가문의 전통을 지속하는 관례화 된 삼년상’이라고 할 수 있다.
반면, 화재 선생의 삼년상은 고인의 유지에 따라 유교식으로 소종의 초석을 놓는 의도된 삼년상이었다. 모든 절차는 물론, 개제할 신주가 없음에도 길제를 지낸 것은 예서에 의존한 삼년상임을 보여준다. 한마디로 ‘소종의 유교식 전통을 시작하는 삼년상’이었다.
유교식 삼년상은 고인의 시신을 처리하고 고인의 영혼을 조상신으로 승화시켜 가계(家系)를 계승하는 장치였다. 유족에게 3년이라는 시간은 고인의 죽음이 가져온 충격과 절체절명의 위기를 극복하고 일상으로 복귀할 수 있는 기간이자 완충 장치였다. 이것이 시신 처리 중심의 삼일장이 일반화된 현대사회에서도 시신을 처리하고, 고인을 조상신으로 승화시키는 삼년상이 전승되는 방법이자 이유이다.

영어초록

This paper presents a comparative analysis of the Confucian three-year mourning rituals (三年喪) observed by two families in modern society. Both families' rituals adhered closely to the traditional guidelines laid out in Confucian ritual texts. While incorporating modern conveniences and considering the work commitments of contemporary professionals, both families managed to harmonize the traditional mourning period with modern circumstances.
In the case of Mr. So-un’s family, as a long-established lineage, the three-year mourning ritual was part of a continuous tradition in which the Confucian rites were customary. Events such as the memorial rites for the deceased’s birthday, the 49th-day ritual, the selection of weekends to accommodate working members, variations in the offering methods, and memorial rites during mourning were all conducted in a way that integrated modern life while maintaining the core structure of the Confucian three-year mourning period. In summary, it can be described as a “customary three-year mourning ritual sustaining family tradition.
On the other hand, Mr. Hwa-jae’s three-year mourning ritual was an intentional observance designed to lay the foundation for Confucian practices, following the wishes of the deceased. Although the family performed all the rites, including the road-side offering (吉祭), even without the ancestral tablet (神主), it demonstrated their reliance on Confucian ritual texts. In other words, it was a “three-year mourning ritual establishing a new Confucian tradition.
The Confucian three-year mourning ritual served as a process for dealing with the deceased’s body and elevating their spirit to the status of an ancestor, ensuring the continuation of the family line. For the bereaved, the three-year period provided time to overcome the shock and existential crisis brought on by the death and offered a buffer for returning to normal life. This is the way and the reason why the three-year mourning custom, which transforms the deceased into an ancestral spirit, is still passed down, even in modern society where the three-day funeral, focused on the handling of the corpse, has become the norm.
