북송초기 삼교회통론의 양상 (The Aspects of Theory of Intermixture of Three Religions in Early North Song China)

초록

유교 불교 도교의 삼교는 중국을 중심으로 한 동아시아 사상의 대표적인 체계이면서 민중의 생활을 지배해온 이념이었다.통치의 이데올로기로 작용한 유교는일상윤리의 규범이었고,인도에서 전파된 불교는 내세를 위한 기복신앙으로 변해간 것에 반해,도교는 일상적 삶에서 재앙을 쫒고 복을 부르기 위한 방편으로서의역할을 수행하였다.민중들의 삶에서는 대체로 삼교가 서로 분리되어 받아들여지지 않고 하나로 융합되어 수용된 것이 역사적 사실이다.필자는 당나라 말기부터북송 초기까지의 삼교회통론에 많은 관심을 가지고 있다.이 시기 삼교는 각각 修道論의 이론적 체계를 정립하여,성리학의 修養論과 선불교의 修行論그리고 도교의 修煉論이 독특한 형식을 드러내고 있었다.앎과 실천을 분리하지 않는 동양철학의 특징에서 본다면 목적으로서의 成道나 내용으로서의 達道보다는 修道,즉 실천의 방법론은 대단히 중요한 의미를 갖는다.이 시기에 삼교회통론을 주장한 인물들은 다른 종교의 장점을 취하여 자신의 입장에 맞추어 새로운 수도론의 이론체계를 구성하였다.본고에서는 그 당시 삼교회통론과 연관된 유불도 삼교의 대표적인물 몇몇을 검토하고자 한다.불교의 연수와 계숭,도교의 진단과 장백단,그리고 유교의 주돈이 장재 정호 정이가 그들이다.
불교의 경우 연수로부터 계숭으로 이어지는 과정에서 유불융회를 중심으로 전개되는 수도론의 방법이 얼마나 정치한 모습으로 그려지고 있는지를 알 수 있었다.도교의 경우 마음과 몸의 이중적 구조를 가지고 있는 인간의 한계를 극복하기위하여 그들의 수련론에 불교의 수행론을 도입하고 있는 과정이 진단으로부터 장백단에 이르면서 대단히 치밀해지고 있음도 살펴보았다.유교의 경우는 일상성과초월성 및 몸과 마음의 문제를 동시에 해결해야만 하는 복합적인 문제를 가지고있었다.성리학자 네 명의 학문적 탐구 과정에서 그들이 수양론을 점차로 정비해가면서 유학의 본래적 내용과 일치시키려고 하는 노력도 볼 수 있었다.그들의 수도론은 각각 장단점을 가지고 있다.하지만 그들의 치열한 논의를 통하여 ‘자아상실’의 시대로 불리는 현대의 우리들이 보다 행복한 삶을 찾을 수 있는 새로운 수도론 -그것이 수양이든 수행이든 수련이든 아니면 셋을 회통한 것이건 간에 -을모색해 볼 수 있는 단초를 제공받을 수도 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The three religions of Confucianism,Buddhism,and Taoism were typicalsystem oftheEastAsia with China asthecenterand theidea dominatingthepublic.WhileConfucianism served astheruling ideology was a common moralstandard and Buddhism spread from India was changed into religious belieffor afterlife,Taoism played a role as a meansofdefeating disasterand bring fortune.Itisthehistoricalfact that the three religions were accepted not as divided but as united among the publiclives.Ihavea lotofinterestin the intermixture of threereligion,rangedfrom endofTangDynastytoNorth SungDynasty.
In this period,the three religions established theoreticalsystem and MoralTrainingtheory ofNeo-Confucianism,achievementtheory ofZen Buddhism and training theory of Taoism were presented like these unique forms. From the characteristic of Eastern philosophy that doesn'tseparate knowledge from practice,methodology ofpractice has a greater meaning than attainment ofperfection as purpose or than achieving morality as content. This time those who maintained an introduction to the three religions composed a theoreticalsystem of practicing asceticism theory taking merits ofthe other religions and focusing on theirown positions.In thispaper,Iwantto examine the representativemen associatedwith theintermixtureofthreereligion at thattime.TheyareIenShou andChiSungfrom Buddhism,Chen Tuan and Zhang Bo-Duan from Taoism,Gou Dun-I,Zhang Tzai,Cheng Hao andChengIfrom Confucianism. In case ofBuddhism,Icould see thathow the method ofAscetic Practices theory centered with the intermixture ofConfucianism and Buddhism elaborateduringtheprocessfrom Ien Shou toChiSung. In case ofTaoism, to overcome the limitation ofhuman who has dual structure of mind and body, the process that its training theory introduced achievementtheory of Buddhism washighly detailed from Chen Tuan reaching Zhang Bo-Duan.In case ofConfucianism,ithas complicated problems of dailiness, transcendence and resolving the issue aboutthe mind and body.Ican figure outthatfourscholarsof Neo-Confucianism,in theirresearchingprocess,triedtoreconcileMoral Trainingtheoryand originalcontentsofConfucianism organizingMoral Training theory.Their theory ofAscetic Practice has pros and cons each.Butthrough theirheated arguments,wecan beoffered a clueof finding a new theory ofAsceticPractice to find happinessforuswho are living in modern called “the era ofselfloss”whetheritisAscetic PracticesorMoralTraining,Disciplineand whateveristheintermixture ofallofthem.
