해방과 분단의 공간에 나타난 예술가들의 이념적 행보 - 안막의 문학과 삶을 중심으로 - (Artists Appearing on the Liberation and Division of Space in the Ideological Walks - Focused on the Ahn Mak's Literature and Life -)

초록

본고는 해방과 분단의 공간에서 시인이요 프로문예 비평가이며 문화예술가로 활동한 안막의 문학과 삶을 탐구하는데 목적을 두었다. 그는 1910년 한일합방이 조약된 해에 태어난 식민지 지식인들과 사회의 구조적인 모순과 대립하며 한국문학의 이론적 정초를 마련하는데 기여했다. 특히 1930년대 좌파와 우파의 양대 진영 속에서 프로문학을 주도하며 예술의 창작과 내용방법에 대한 사회주의 리얼리즘을 표방했다. 그러나 카프의 1․2차 검거 사건으로 프로문학의 정치투쟁이 불가피하게 되자, 예술 창작 방법의 내용과 형식의 논쟁에 가담하지 않고 독자적인 길을 선택했다.
이러한 문화예술운동의 방향전환은 무용가 최승희와의 결혼에서 비롯된다. 그는 사회혁명의 도정에서 ‘프로문예 비평가’에서 ‘문화 예술가’로 탈바꿈하고 최승희의 무용 내용과 형식까지 결정하는 감독이자 안무가로 변모했다. 안막과 최승희 역시 그 시기에 새로운 예술방향을 모색했고, 예술의 성숙도를 높이기 위해서 사회주의 혁명 대신 문화예술적인 방법을 선택했다. 특히 이들은 조선 춤의 현대화작업을 구현하며 예술의 대중화와 현대성을 확립하는 일에 몰두했다. 처음엔 일본의 저항의식에서 출발한 문화운동이었지만 안막부부는 조선적인 것의 세계화를 위해서 자발적으로 친일활동을 하며 일본의 내선일체를 수용했다. 이들의 친일행각은 새로운 질서를 수용하기 위한 전략이었고 더 나아가서 조선 독립이었다는 점에서 이중적인 속성을 갖는다.
그러나 일본이 패망하자, 안막은 사회변혁의 과정에서 북한의 사회주의 리얼리즘의 정책을 수용했다. 그리고 뒤늦게 월북한 최승희와 함께 예술의 창조성을 기획하고 구축하는데 앞장섰다. 하지만 그는 북한에서의 예술과 정치권력의 최고 경지에 도달했던 1958년경에 연안파의 숙청작업에서 제거되었다. 그의 가족 또한 숙청되지만 최승희는 북한 무용의 골격을 마련하는데 중요한 역할을 했다고 평가되어 1969년경에 연안파의 한설야, 박팔양과 함께 복권되었다고 전해진다.
안막은 이렇게 사회혁명의 도정에서 자신을 버리고 새로운 기법을 차용하며 ‘프로문예 비평가’와 ‘문화 예술가’, 그리고 ‘문예 정책가’로 활동하며 다양한 의식세계를 보여주었으나 이데올로기의 희생물이 되었다. 결과적으로 안막의 부부는 문학적 기질과 예술의 재능을 지녔음에도 모순에 가득한 제도와 새로운 대표자들에 의해서 제대로 평가받지 못하고 파멸의 길을 가고 말았다. 그러나 탄생 100주년을 기념하여 안막의 문학적 행로가 새롭게 재조명되고 있다. 그에 대한 연구와 평가는 한국문학사의 재조명을 위해서 중요한 작업이다. 앞으로 실증적인 자료가 발굴되어서 문학사적 위치 설정을 위한 연구가 계속 이루어지길 기대한다.

영어초록

This study set out to investigate the literature and life of Ahn Mak, who was a poet, proletarian literary critic, and cultural artist in the space of liberation and division. Ahn stood opposite to the structural contradictions of the society along with the colonial intellectuals born in 1910 when the convention on Japanese annexation of Korea was concluded but, at the same time, made a contribution to the establishment of the foundation of Korean literature. In the 1930s, in particular, he led proletarian literature in the struggle between the left and right wing and represented socialist realism about the creation and content method of art. Once proletarian literature was forced to take on political fights after the first and second arrests of KAPF members, however, he no longer participated in the controversy over the contents and forms of art creation methods and chose to pursue his own way.
His change of direction in the movement of culture and art was caused by his marriage to Choi Seung-hee, a dancer. In the course of social revolution, he transformed himself from a proletarian literary critic into a cultural artist and further director and choreographer that decided the contents and forms of Choi's dance. In that period, both Ahn and Choi were in search of new directions in art and adopted cultural and artistic methods instead of socialist revolution in order to increase artistic maturity. They were especially engrossed in establishing the popularity and modernity of art, engaging in the modernization of Joseon dance. It was a cultural movement that originated in their resistance against Japan at the beginning. With time passing, however, the couple started to do pro-Japanese activities and voluntarily accepted Japan's Naeseonilche for the sake of the globalization of what was Joseon. Their pro-Japanese actions have dual nature in that they were part of their strategy to accept a new order and ultimately sought after Joseon's independence.
After Japan collapsed, however, Ahn accepted North Korea's policies of socialist realism in the course of social reform and took a lead in planning and establishing artistic creativity along with his wife Choi, who crossed the border into North Korea later. In 1958 when art and political power reached a peak in North Korea, however, he was eliminated by the purge operation of Yeonan Party. His family shared the same fate with him, but it has been said that his wife Choi was reinstated in 1969 along with Han Seol-ya and Park Pal-yang of Yeonan Party, being recognized for her critical roles in the formation of North Korean dance framework.
Ahn showed his diverse conscious worlds, discarding himself, adopting new techniques, and turning into a cultural artist in the course of social revolution, only to be a victim of ideology. The couple ended up walking down the road to destruction, not being judged right by the system full of contradictions and new representatives despite the fact that they demonstrated excellent literary dispositions and artistic talents. Today his literary journey receives new illuminations to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. Given that his evaluations are important in shedding new light onto the history of Korean literature, further researches will follow to find his position in the literary history.
