Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact The impact of tooth loss on oral health
related quality of life among the elderly population in Seongju, Korea.
Methods: A total of 517 participants (male 215, female 302) aged more than 65 years (mean 71.7
years) were surveyed cross-sectionally. The subjects were examined their oral conditions by 2 trained
dentists, and also surveyed their socio-demographic characteristics and oral health related quality of life
by face to face interviews. Dental examinations included the number of missing teeth, the number of
teeth with caries, and status and need of denture. Oral health related quality of life was evaluated by
short-form of Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). The participants were divided by two groups
according to the number of tooth loss; (1) tooth loss<9 and (2) tooth loss ≥9, respectively. The
differences in OHIP-14 and it’s 7 subscales between two groups were tested by student’s t-test. The
association between tooth loss and OHIP-14 was assessed by multiple regression analysis after

    adjusting for socio-demographic variables.
Results: There was significantly difference in mean scores of OHIP-14 between the participants with
    <9 tooth loss (63.60) and the participants with≥9 tooth loss (61.62) (p=0.005). Among the 7 OHIP-14
subscales, the mean scores of functional limitation, physical disability and handicap were significantly
higher in the participants with <9 tooth loss than in those with ≥ 9 tooth loss (p<0.001, p=0.029, and
p=0.006, respectively). No significant differences in the mean scores of physical pain, psychological
discomfort, psychological disability and social disability were founded by the number of tooth loss.
Multiple regression analysis identified that the OHIP-14 score of an individual with ≥ 9 tooth loss was
tended to decrease compared with the score of an individual with <9 tooth loss after adjustment for age,
gender, educational level, job status, and income(b=-1.55, p=0.032).
Conclusions: The findings of the present study indicated that old participants with <9 tooth loss had
better oral health related quality of life than those with ≥9 tooth loss. Further study would be necessary
a comprehensive oral health program for the elderly to reduce a tooth loss and promote oral health.
