초록

This paper aims to examine Pearl S. Buck’s Naturalism in “The Frill”. The spirit of naturalism began to creep into French literature with Balzac’s “Preface” to Comedie Humaine, and the first “scientific naturalism” was Zola’s “Experimental Novel”, in which the author appears as a laboratory scientist who studies the reactions of his characters to their heredity and social environment. In “The Frill”, the native tailor finds himself ensnared in a predetermined life. He has to grapple with various harsh circumstances such as poverty, mockery, suppression, injustice, and condemnation. His individual identity or even being as a human being is not important because he becomes merely an instrument for those who exploit, dominate, and discard him like Mrs. Lowe. Readers are unable to anticipate that his situation will change or improve. Instead, his sorrowful daily lives are described in detail, allowing readers to closely observe both his external realities and internal psychology. Due to these aspects of the novel, it can be argued that Pearl Buck’s writing styles or authorial intentions in “The Frill” were influenced by naturalism despite her early life spent in China.
