성 프란시스의 삶과 신앙사상에 관한 고찰 (A Study on the Life and Religious Thoughts of St. Francis of Assisi)

초록

본 연구의 주제는 기본적으로 두 가지 이다. 첫째, 성 프란시스의 삶을 재구성하고, 둘째, 그것을 이루는 핵심적인 요소들을 살펴보는 것이다.
실지로 성 프란시스는 자신에 대한 기록을 거의 남기지 않았다. 당대인이 기록해 놓았던 성 프란시스의 삶에 관한 전기적 사료는 두 종류이다. 성 프란시스 수도회의 청빈파와 수도회파의 기록이 그것인데, 이 두 파의 기록들이 제공하는 성 프란시스의 역사적 이미지는 상당히 달랐다. 필자가 성 프란시스의 삶을 당대의 역사적인 맥락에서 재구성하려고 했던 이유가 여기에 있었다. 이러한 과정은 결과적으로 성 프란시스의 실체적인 삶에 대한 인식과 더불어 성 프란시스 수도회의 영향을 평가하는 것이었다.
성 프란시스의 삶을 통하여 우리는 성 프란시스가 엄청난 열정을 지닌 한 가지 목적을 갖고 있었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그의 유일한 목적은 본인의 생각으로는, 그리스도에 대한 모방(The imitation of Christ) 이었다. 그리스도에 대한 모방은 시기를 불문하고 보통의 그리스도교도들이 하기 어려운 일종의 도전이었으며, 이는 오늘날에도 도전이다. 그러나 성 프란시스는 이 과업에 도전할만한 열정을 갖고 있었다. 이 유일무이한 열정이 성 프란시스를 예외적으로 높은 신앙의 성숙도를 갖춘 역사적인 인물로 만들었다. 그의 신앙 사상은 순수한 복음주의, 낙관적 실천적 이상주의, 절대 청빈, 이웃에 대한 자기희생적인 사랑 등을 포괄한다. 성 프란시스는 자의적으로 성직자가 되지 않았다. 그는 사명감으로 빈자들을 포함하여 도시민들에게 전통적인 교회 조직들에 의해 채워지지 않았던 종교적 열정을 채워주었다.
성 프란시스는 또한 중세 가톨릭 조직에도 커다란 영향을 미쳤다. 상당한 수의 복음적인 추종자들이 있었으므로, 성 프란시스는 이러한 추종자들을 성 프란시스 수도회로 결성하도록 승인 받았다. 당시 수도원의 일종이었던 성 프란시스 수도회는 역사적인 맥락에서 ‘프란시스 운동’ (탁발 수도회 운동)을 일으켰다. 성 프란시스 수도회는 실지로 많은 그리스도적인 가치를 구현하였는데, 예를 들면, 복음적 청빈, 자선의 한 행위로서의 사랑, 공동체에 대한 무조건적인 봉사, 탁발 수도사들 간의 평등하고 단일한 신분 공동체의 확립 등이 그것이다. 성 프란시스의 삶과 그의 수도회가 구현한 그리스도적 가치는 비단 그리스도교도에게뿐 아니라 인간의 가치를 존중하고 자연의 질서를 찬미하고 있는 그대로의 자연을 보호하고자 하는 지구상의 모든 신실한 인간들에게 오늘날에도 영감을 주고 있다.
필자가 역사적인 맥락에서 성 프란시스의 삶을 재구성하려고 노력했음에도 불구하고 이 본고는 많은 점이 부족하다 : 첫째, 성 프란시스와 13세기의 사회와의 역동적인 관계에 대한 설명이 없었다. 둘째, 성 프란시스와 그의 추종자들 간의 생생한 그림을 보여주지 못했다. 마지막으로 성 프란시스와 그의 시대를 평가하는 근거라고 여겨지는 성 프란시스의 삶과 신앙 사상에 대한 구조적인 이해가 충분하지 못하였다.
본고는 이처럼 많은 한계가 있지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 이 논문이 중세 사상을 연구하는 데에 있어서 성 프란시스의 중요성을 각인시킬 수 있다면 필자는 그것으로 족하다.

영어초록

The theme of this study is basically two points. One is to reconstruct the Life of St. Francis (1181~1226)and examine his essential elements. And the other is to reconstruct how essential elements of St. Francis were institutionalized as the Franciscan Order and the Friar Movements by his followers.
Actually St. Francis left rare documents on his personal life. As far as the personal life of St. Francis is concerned, the contemporary records were only two. The one was written by ‘the Spirituals’ and the other was written by ‘the Conventuals’. The documents of the conflicting Franciscan were suggesting pretty different historical images of St. Francis. That was the reason why I tried to reconstruct the life and works of St. Francis in the contemporary historical context. Hopefully, this process would result in the appreciation of his real life and the evaluation of the impact of the Franciscans even.
Through the life of St. Francis, we were able to find out that he had a single purpose in his life with a tremendous passion. This single purpose, I guess, was the imitation of Christ. The imitation of Christ was/is a sort of a impossible challenge to the ordinary christians in any period. However, St. Francis had enough courage to challenge this task. This unique passion was able to make St. Francis an unprecedented historical figure with an exceptional maturity on the christianity. His christianity included the purity of the evangelism, the optimistic idealism, the absolute poverty, the practical faith, and the self-sacrificing affection to the neighbours. St. Francis was not belong to the clergy class personally. Through this vocation, he was able to compensate the urban citizens including the urban poor who were not taken care of well by the traditional church organization.
St. Francis gave a great impact on the medieval catholic organization also. Because of the huge evangelical followers, he was allowed to organize these followers the Franciscan order. The Franciscan order which was a kind of a monastery at that time, caused the Friar(the Mendicants) Movements in historical context. The Franciscan Order achieved many of christian values practically, for example, the evangelical poverty, the love as an act of charity, and the unconditional service to the community, and the achievement of the equal and one class community among the mendicants. The life of St. Francis and the practise of the Franciscan Order are still giving the inspirations not only to the christians, but also to the all sincere human beings over the world who want to respect the human values and admire the beauty and hope to protect the nature in its original shape.
Even though I tried to reconstruct the life of St. Francis in historical context, this study has lots of limits: First, it did not explain the dynamic connection between St. Francis and the society of 13th century. Second, it was not able to show the vivid pictures of the relationships between St. Francis and his followers. Last but not least, it was not able to grasp fully the life and works of St. Francis in a structural way, which seems to be the foundation of evaluating him and his period,Although it has many limits, still, I would be happy if this study is able to convince the importance of St. Francis in the study of the medieval thoughts.
