박제가 삶의 마음속 出路, 燕京의 友情 (The Psychological Escape in the Life of Bak Je-Ga, Friendship in Yanjing)

초록

이 글은 근대 이전 우리 역사에서 유례가 드문 박제가의 국제 교유와 우정이 왜 하필 1790년 연경(유리창)에서 맺어졌으며, 그 사회적 조건과 심리적 기원이 무엇인가 하는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 우정의 의미는 접근 각도와 문제의식의 수준에 따라 크게 달라지는데, 기왕의 논의는 대개 우정의 현상을 발굴하여 외적인 아름다움과 정당성을 강조하는 선에서 그치고 말았다. 또 개별적 사안에 접근해도 도출되는 결론은 별로 달라지지 않았다. 18,9세기 朝淸 지식인의 교유와 우정이 지니는 의의를 매기기 위해서는 개별적인 사안에 대한 정밀한 접근이 선행되어야 한다는 전제로 논의한 결과, 박제가의 연경 우정은 조선의 사회 모순과 그 자신의 심각한 불화감 속에서 탄생한 것임을 확인할 수 있었다. 그 우정은 개인에게는 꽤 유효한 심리적 위안이 되기는 했지만, 불화감의 근거인 사회 모순을 해결해주지는 못했다. 우정의 강도는 조선 사회의 현실(수준)과는 반비례하는 것이었으니, 사회적인 차원에서 박제가의 우정은 지극히 불완전한 것이었던 셈이다.
박제가 우정의 사회적 조건과 심리의 실상을 따져보는 것은, 오늘날 우리 사회의 우정에 대한 성찰과 불가분의 관계가 있다. 아름답고 정당한 과거 현상 이면의 불편한 진실들에 대한 통찰은 오늘날 우리 사회의 우정이 지니는 문제점들에 성찰이 있어야만 가능하다. 18세기 조선 사회의 불평등 조건을 외면하고 겉으로 드러나는 특수한 우정의 아름다움만을 주목하는 것은, 결과적으로 우정의 본질을 왜곡하는 것일 뿐만 아니라, 지금 우리 사회의 불평등 조건을 조장하거나 묵인하는 지적 도덕적 책임 방기 행위가 될 수 있다. 시대가 달라졌고 사회 환경은 크게 변하여, 이제 서얼을 차별하는 제도는 없어졌고 외국인과의 우정은 일상이 되었다. 18세기 말 박제가의 우정은 더 이상 특별하지 않다. 하지만 오늘날 다른 방식으로 강조되고 실천되는 우정 현상의 저변에 우리가 쉽게 간파하지 못하는 배제와 폭력, 불평등과 억압이 놓여있는 것은 아닐까? 박제가의 아름다운 우정이 오늘날 우리에게 던지는 질문이다.

영어초록

This paper started from the critical mind on the reason why the international association and friendship of Bak Je-Ga which was very rare in the history of Korea before the modern times were made in Yanjing(Liulickhang) in 1790 and what was the social environment and psychological basis for such friendship. The friendship has various meanings depending on the approaches and depth of critical mind. Most of previous discussions only emphasized the external beauty and validation of friendship by identifying the phenomenon of friendship. In addition, the conclusion on the meaning of friendship was not differentiated even by the individual perspectives. For identifying the meaning of association and friendship of the intellect in Joseon period and Qing period in China in the 18th and 19th century, this paper assumed that more detailed approach on each issue should be applied. Accordingly, it was found that the friendship of Bak Je-Ga in Yanjing was based on the social contradiction of Joseon period and the severe discord in himself. His friendship was very effective psychological consolation, but it couldn't solve the social contradiction, the basis of his discord. The depth of friendship was in inverse proportion to the social reality of Joseon period. Thus, the friendship of Bak Je-Ga was substantially incomplete on the social aspects.
The examination on social environment and psychology as the basis of the friendship of Bak Je-Ga has an inseparable relation with the deliberation on the friendship in the present society. The deliberation on discomfortable reality behind the beautiful and fair phenomenon in the past can be performed only by reflecting upon the problems of friendship in the society at the present. It may be distortion on the essence of friendship and the abandonment of moral and intellectual responsibility creating or overlooking the unfair conditions in this society at present to pay attention only to beauty of specific friendship outwardly exposed and to ignore the conditions of social unfair in Joseon period in 18th century. The times went by and social environment was significantly changed. Furthermore, the social system discriminating the children of concubines was disappeared. And the friendship with foreigners became a usual thing. The friendship of Bak Je-Ga at the end of 18th century was not unique anymore. However, are there any ignorance, violence, inequality or suppression which we can't easily identify at the base of friendship which is emphasized and implemented in different ways in these days? The beautiful friendship of Bak Je-Ga gives out this question to us.
